  1. I'm hyped up but also scared! I know there's more rejections coming along (rejections are just more likely than admissions) but my heart can't take too many decisions this week!
  2. I've gotten the same advice as well, more recently from a professor who did their International Relations PhD at Cambridge. They mentioned that unless you graduate from a well-known name like Oxbridge and LSE, it's really difficult to break into R1 universities in the US. Unfortunately US PhDs are just generally seen as having better mobility and sometimes methods training -- I received the same advice when I was applying to Canadian universities (i.e unless applying to McGill, Toronto or UBC, breaking into the US market is extremely difficult.)
  3. Second @smug-face ! I think a number of universities in the US (as part of the Council of Graduate Schools) have an agreement that you don't have to notify them of your decision prior to April 15 for offers with financial support, so I would check if that's the deadline for your program.
  4. I've been watching a broad genre of shows on Netflix since March 2020 due to quarantine -- here are my recommendations for certain types (based on Netflix US and DO) : Chinese Wuxia: The Untamed, Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain, Ice Fantasy Asian Fantasy: Bride of Habaek, A Korean Odyssey, The Ghost Bride, The Devil Punisher Asian Period/Historical Drama: Yanxi Palace, My Country The New Age Latino Sitcom: Gentefied (if only for the minuscule crumb of Afro-Latin representation) LGBTQ+: Hollywood, Your Name Engraved Herein, Wish You Afro Leads: Queen Sono, Lupin Anime: Kimetsu No Yaiba Demon Slayer (just landed!), Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Hunter x Hunter, Blue Exorcist Western Period/Historical Drama: Bridgerton, The Iron Lady, The Crown Asian RomCom: Love Alarm, Well-Intended Love, Lovestruck in the City, DoDoSolSolLaLaSol, Love O2O I'm also rewatching some Latin American telenovelas from my childhood like Maria La Del Barrio, Da Cor Do Pecado, Muñeca Brava, Rubí and Rosalinda. Second "The Good Place" and "The Politician"!
  5. Thank you! I also concur with other posters about this week -- after perusing quite a bit of data from a range of schools, it seems like the fifth full week of the year is usually when a lot of admissions decisions tend to go out, probably because Spring Semester classes are starting/have started.
  6. I finished unpacking my stuff this morning! Never thought a new bed would feel this amazing.
  7. It's part of my "schools that are an automatic yes if I can afford them" list.
  8. I've checked Berkeley's portal so much it's the first thing that pops up in my address bar when I type "www" ?
  9. Can't believe we're soon to be in February...this year is going by fast!
  10. Congrats! And good luck to all those waiting on funding news ❤️
  11. Congratulations ❤️ loving all the good news people are getting today
  12. My warmest congratulations to you ❤️
  13. I guess it depends on the school. Some people like @PolNerd seem to have gotten their acceptance decisions after the first wave that we saw on the forum.
  14. Just curious but am I the only one taking solace in not hearing anything? Like, as long as I don't hear back, I may still have some hope of good news.
  15. Thank you all! ❤️
  16. I'm moving between apartments in about an hour so I hope nothing comes out before that...I don't need the news right now. ?
  17. I think most schools will be a bloodbath this year anyway
  18. One thing I wish I did much earlier in the process was get in contact with more faculty. I don't think it does any good to do so right in the middle of application season, but reaching out to professors/POIs around March-April might be worth exploring for future cycles.
  19. If you're feeling GradCafe anxiety, especially right now, I would suggest putting the website on a block list so you can't access it. There are many browser extensions that can facilitate that process. Trust me, your mental health and peace of mind is worth more than being able to check this website.
  20. Exactly! @Aydemiru if you want to feel better, check out the 2020 cycle thread. There were quite a few people who didn't get admitted to lower ranked schools but got into Harvard, Yale, etc. You have to remember that the more money a department has, the more faculty they can employ, which means they can take in students who might have a more niche fit because there's broad expertise among the faculty, compared to a smaller department that might require tighter fit/already has enough students studying what you want to pursue.
  21. That's a really fast turnaround time! Was it for PhDs?
  22. If you're using Chrome, I recommend checking out these extensions: StayFocused | BlockSite I would also set your phone on Do Not Disturb and uninstall the email app so as to not hear any notifications. We have absolutely no way of knowing when results will be released as applicants, so remove any stress sources for today if you have to do so.
  23. I think online classes have also contributed to my slump. I was much more productive pre-covid during Spring 2020 than right now.
  24. Has anyone been able to get any research done lately? I'm still writing, but it feels like my productivity has gone down, although I think COVID in general has affected that...??‍?
