I received a very kind email yesterday letting me know that I'm near the top of the waitlist for UW Madison! Keeping my fingers crossed that it will change to an offer as April 15th approaches. Apparently they received hundreds of poetry apps this year for just 6 spots.  Also hoping this means that I might be hearing good news from other programs in the future? Who knows?!  0a/2w/3r/7p
Also wanted to share my condolences for Vandy applicants--was also rejected and it was a tough one for sure. It wasn't surprising, but the idea of Nashville had grown on me somewhat :')
Really messed up--what's going on at OSU, I mean. I heard that someone had already declined an offer from another school before they came out with the news. Really hope this doesn't happen to other programs... I know things are tough, but I feel like they could have been waaaayy more transparent.

This is so incredibly kind of you to say--thank you so much. Like many of us I've been dealing with a lot of self doubt, basically questioning every decision I've made leading up to this point haha. Your words really cheered me up : )

I got some advice from an English PhD to hold onto the offers until April 15 because people may change funding. I'd much rather decline all offers other than my front-runner as my options change to make the process easier / less-anxiety filled for other applicants and the programs, but it appears we shouldn't do that this cycle. A lot of apprehension this year and I think that will lead to a mass shuffle on April 15.

It ain't over 'til it's over, people.

Since I couldn't find any info on here when I was doing research, I'm sharing SAIC interview experience for people who may be interested in the future.
The panel is with two faculty members--mine were Mary Cross and Nathan Hoks. Many of the questions came directly from my statement of purpose so I'm glad I looked that over again before the interview. They asked some standard questions: what are you reading; why SAIC; what classes are you interested in while here. Mostly it was just a conversation about major themes of my work and cross-disciplinary interests. They did praise my work--called out specific lines that stuck with them--but they did not ask me to explain or go over a specific poem.
I'd recommend not asking about funding during the interview. SAIC does an "interview weekend" and this includes a luncheon with everyone who was invited to interview, along with faculty, who can answer those financial questions (this happened over zoom this year). Getting together (again, via zoom) with current students was very informative as they were candid about representation among faculty (not diverse) and the cost. Decision will come within 2 weeks, I'm told, which includes merit based scholarship decisions. They generally give acceptances via phone call and then email and send a letter.
good luck to everyone in this great time of waiting!

    edit:
Was emailed by Amaud Johnson from UW-Madison a little bit ago and notified I have been placed on  a waitlist! Did not disclose the number of people also on the waitlist.

Hi Everyone. New person here. I have a few (unrelated) questions. But let me first offer my empathetic condolences to those who received rejections from Vanderbilt and/or WashU yesterday. I am sorry for you. And with you. The double rejections made for a very anti-Friday.
Anyway: those of you who mentioned earlier that you'd advanced to Phase 2 at Ole Miss...have you heard anything since? I also advanced (Feb 9th) but have heard nothing since. Is this typical? This part-way success is purgatory and purgatory is a quiet and lonesome place.
AND...did anyone else (who there applied) receive an email from Miami Ohio yesterday saying "Congratulations! Your graduate application is now complete"? My application has been complete since October so the "Congratulations!" made for a bit of a heart-stopping tease.
Fingers crossed, everyone. Fingers crossed forever.

this is pretty heinous. I don't have any info to add, but, yeah, obviously it's messed up. I would recommend people not apply here in the future. same for any other program that rescinds or alters funding in this way. This is a huge deal

I was also rejected by Amherst! It was a tough one for me. I haven't seen any numbers, but I wonder how many applied this year in poetry. It will be interesting to see how this year shapes up compared to previous years... would love to see actual numbers at some point!
I don't even know which programs I'm most anxious to hear back from at this point because I've somehow trained myself to be impartial...  Getting waitlisted at one of my schools gives me hope, but I'm trying to go about my life as though I'm not waiting. When things got difficult and I found myself obsessing, I took a break from this forum and started leaving my phone in another room haha. It's been great for my writing practice at least!
One thing that gives me hope is that two of my poems are going to be published in a top 30 publication this summer, and I'm hoping that's a good sign. Even if I don't get in anywhere, it's nice to know that someone appreciated my work enough to include it. I'm even getting paid! *gasp*  Basically unheard of in the poetry world.  I really hope one adcom sees what this editor saw in my poems

Very true! Even the most "marketable" genres of the MFA are subject to a lot of luck and uncertainty. I'm just living in the moment--kind of seems like the infrastructure o the US is crumbling anyway, I figure I might as well do whatever I want in terms of what time I have. It's easy for me to say that though--I don't have kids or other people that rely on me. Maybe one day I'll get more serious about having a stable career and go into teaching, but for now I'm just trying to embrace a sense of adventure

Research is a basic skill required of anyone applying to graduate school. If you have questions regarding the specifics of a program, I recommend contacting the program directly.

    Waitlisted at Oregon State University!
The waitlist email truly couldn't have been kinder, and now I'm in the nicest back and forth with one of the professors. I'm hoping beyond all words that other poets accepted to OSU get into their dream programs with all the funding they could ever wish, leaving me an open slot so I can go live in Corvallis like my little Oregonian heart desires
