I think we need to send this to them DIRECTLY! Let's organize a flashmob!!!!!!!!

It depens very much on a progam. You can send a reply to a grad secretaty, reiterating your interest in the program and asking to explain the structure of their wait-list. For example, are people on this list numbered like 1,2,3 etc. and if they are what is your position. May be other commenters will give you more advice on that!
-
Nope, nothing from Syracuse. Actually, I emailed their grad secretary asking if no interview invite means I was rejected or waitlisted. She said that such decisions will be made by March: "However, the admissions committee has not rejected any applicants yet, but will make final decisions likely by the end of February."

Does this professor want to be my adviser?
Strangefox replied to JibberJabber's topic in Decisions, Decisions
May be this prof was assigned to you as a first-year advisor. This advisor stuff is different in every program so it can be that - or something else. Better ask them to be sure -
Can prospective grad students count to 25?

Ok... Radioactive bears drink transparency every eternity of five seconds. -
Hi! You can ask questions about TAing (load, responsibilities, opportunities to teach your own course), if you are interested in class discussions you can ask about average class size (seminar-style pr lecture-style), social atmosphere in a department, are students competitive or supportive, is it possible to change advisor, what is the general mentoring style in the department... There are many things to ask. It has been discussed on this forum in many threads, some quite recent, you might want to search for them. Talking about funding over the phone - why not? I did that at it felt quite appropriate.

So do people on the results board manage to communicate with each other somehow? There is no opportunity to post comments there, right? Do they just choose "Other" and write: "To the poster below - blablabla?"...

Can prospective grad students count to 25?

Ok, can someone here explain to me what is going on in this thread?? No, seriously, I do not understand... -
Ok, now I am accepted to Temple as well! And I was also informed by a mysterios first-year grad-student... I will PM you, mediahistory and TVPhd, just want to know what grad student have YOU received your acceptance note from Now I am waiting for news about $$$, there is a good chance I will get some, the professor I talked to was very interested in my app and said they would recommend me for funding.... Oh well, I won't let myself be too much happy until I am certain I will get this money.

I don't know if it is an appropriate level for you, but I absolutely love Cortazar!

I would suggest at least a dozen

I was rejected after a Skype interview. The reason - my research was not a perfect fit with that of faculty members of the department and they had few spots this year. This department is quite small so they do not have a waitlist - that is why I was rejected, not waitlisted. The professor who I was interviewed by and who then sent me a letter informing me that I am rejected was extremeley nice and when I asked why I had been rejected and if there were any weaknesses in my application, they said that my app was perfect but the fit was not and though they would love to work with me, they had to choose applicants with a perfect fit. It was not anything I said during the interview that made them reject me. Actually, when they were interviewing me they did not know exactly hoe many sports they would have. They fund all grad students and the financial situation is tight so in the end they had to choose according to the fit and the fit was not in my favor.... So yes, it happens, you can be rejected after an interview. If they had more money this year, they could take me, but unfortunately it was not the case.

Thanks!!!

Actually, it's fine and even expected to send a thank-you note after an interview, even if you thanked a professor during the conversation. You can look into the "Interviews" board, there are some threads about that.
-
By the way, what IS a co-op? I mean, I understand it now more or less but I would like an exact definition
-
By the way, did you send the professor a thank-you email after the interview?
-
When you were talking, did the professor mention when approximately you may hear from the program? If they didn't, you can reiterate your interest and ask when you can expect to hear news.

Contact Graduate Secretary About Funding?
Strangefox replied to Mind_Left_Body's topic in Waiting it Out
I think you can certainly do that. It is not pestering, it is avery important piece of ingormation that can influence ad comm decision. So yes, I would contact a grad secretaty about that. Good luck! -
talking about personal life on interview
Strangefox replied to aquellita's topic in Interviews and Visits
I think that you will see from how the conversation will go how much you need to say about your background. It depends a lot on a person you will be talking with. Just follow the flow of the conversation and you will feel when and what is appropriate to say. If you mention your background, stay professional, positive and concise. I am sure they will appreciate a lot your resilience and creativity! Good luck!
