  1. Actually I am having a similar but much rarer experience with the U of Iowa. I sent an email asking about when the decisions may be available(just asking that, no other question). Then replied me: "Many thanks for submitting a strong application and for contacting me. We are close to making decisions and you are ranking quite high on our list. I wonder if I can have a 15-min zoom meeting with you to see if the department and you are a good match? You are highly welcome to ask questions about our program too." We're having a zoom meeting very soon and I feel a little bit mixed bc this is not a typical invitation I've seen(what would have happened if I didn't contact? No interview and just waiting?), but I'd like to believe that this is at least a positive thing.
  2. Did anyone got an offer from Duke Biostatistics Ph.D. program? I would be grateful if someone can share updates!
  3. Even if they don't require it I think it's better to tell them bc you are making changes in your official records.
  4. Does anyone have an idea by when would Duke Biostat make their decisions for PhD interviewees?
  5. I think the admission committee loves to see applicants with full GPA. They seem to take applicants like you as a diligent, sincere, and responsible person to work with.
  6. Though you may not be personally interested, I think Bayesian is also a promising field given its applications on graphical models and theoretical formulations of neural networks (like AlphaNet). But I totally agree with @bayessays that it's better to apply to the places with more wide options that interest you.
  7. I just got rejected from UCLA biostat phd program... I wish the best of luck to other candidates!!
  8. I saw that someone in the result thread saying more than 50... If it's true, it'd be quite tough competition since they accepted only 12 students last year!
  9. Basically, I think your experience is outstanding enough. And your LOR might appeal compelling among the applicants. I'm not an experienced expert of grad school admissions, but, I'm sure that you will not be automatically rejected just for your GRE scores. Though I think you can grab better choices if you get more than 165 for Q. But you know what? Quite many schools are waiving submission of GRE scores for applicants these days, so why not apply? Let's give it a shot!!
  10. Congratulation on your success in admission! The committee must have been extremely impressed by your application given their surprisingly early decision! I also applied to CSU and wish I can hear from them too.
  11. I am an international student who once had been worried about not getting high GRE scores. My scores are 169 / 153 / 4.0 for Q / V / A. I wanted to know if schools really CARE about it so I contacted all the schools I plan to apply for. 10% of schools including Rice or Vanderbilt require quantiles over mid eighties for every section(this is what the grad coordinator said). But I can say that 90% will like you if you have a firm profile and passion for research.
  12. Hey, I inquired them to explain what happened exactly, and this time they said that my application was fully reviewed by the committee and resulted in direct rejection. Honestly, I am not even sure if I am communicating with the same person. What in the hell is the matter with their system? Are they able to communicate with each other? How such a thing can happen in a school like Purdue?? They seem so indifferent about what applicants would experience in the admission process.
  13. Don't worry my friend, once you provide them your unofficial test scores they can at least review your application and consider for admission!
  14. They say that their system does not allow reverting their decision and they tell me to reapply if I want to be considered for admission. It sounds like waste of time and money. What should I do??!
  15. It was a total shock. I contacted the graduate coordinator and It seems like there has been a clerical error and my application for Fall 2021 was actually put with Spring 2021 applications. As you may know, US schools accept Ph.D. Applications for Fall terms only, and that was the reason I got direct rejection!!
  16. Hello, I'm an international applicant who is applying for 2021 Biostatistics and Statistics Ph.D. programs. Purdue's primary deadline was Dec. 1st and I got a direct rejection on that day. I think it's far better than being ghosted for a pretty long time, though, I'm curious whether such an early rejection is common or not.
  17. Thank you for all comments and references. I was very lucky to find this thread before applying!
  18. I appreciate your recommendations. You are right that I have to meet professors to discuss on which programs would be the best fit for me. Though the programs ranked near USNR 15 would put me in extreme competitions, I think they deserve challenging. Would you mind if I ask for a rough range of Biostat programs that might be suitable for me? Many thanks again.
  19. Thanks for the reply! As I mentioned mine as top 100 'Asian' school, it is ranked pretty lower than them. But I saw a few of my alumni getting admissions to UFL and MSU.
  20. Hi, I am an international student interested in high-dimensional data and Ph.D. in Stat or Biostat. I found this topic thread recently and now I am seeking for any advice on my qualification. Type of Student: International male Undergrad Institution: ranked in top 80 ~ 100 asian university in QS Major: Statistics GPA: 3.75 by WES Grad Institution: same with undergrad Major: Statistics GPA: 3.6 / 4.5 (90q) GRE General: Many programs seem to waive the GRE submissions for applicants now, so I am reconsidering taking additional test. Q: 168 (94q) V: 153 (54q) W: 4 (55q) Applying to: Statistics PhD Research Experience: I have two publications in domestic journals(one on an applied NLP) and two manuscripts under review at international journals(one is under minor revision at CSAM). Also I have industrial experience at the public health and computer vision sector for 6 months in total. Letters of Recommendation: One from advisor and two from co-advisors; I wrote papers with two co-advisors, and I have taken every course of all three recommenders throughout undergrad and grad school. Math/Statistics Grades: Planning on Applying to: Not decided yet Where do you think I would have high chance for getting into and where may I consider for high reach? Thank you in advance for your help.
