  1. If anyone else applied to Tulane's DrPH program, just know they are revamping the program... So I'm not sure what that will mean for anyone starting fall 2021. I was on a zoom open house the other day where the SBPS faculty and staff mentioned this. In the chat, I had a question (can't remember what) and the program manager asked me to email her on whether or not I would want to roll my application over to the next admissions cycle (because of how they're changing the program structure). Because I've already applied to 5 programs for Fall 2021, I don't necessarily want to let the prospect of Tulane go, for the potential of getting into other schools... And what would be worse would be if I ended up not getting into Tulane for Fal 2022 lol. Basically, part of me wants to know whether IF I were to get in, could I just defer enrollment by a year? That way if I were to be accepted into other programs, I'd be able to make a more informed decision. ANYWAY! Just wanted folks to get that little bit of information.
  2. I don't know if they're required honestly. There is nothing on the website that says they're required, so don't count yourself out!
  3. Did anyone else in here apply to Tulane or GW's DrPH program? In the general email to students who have applied it says there will be decisions in February for Tulane and March for GW. I'm just very interested if interviews are largely a part of their admissions process for these programs. For reference, I also applied to Hopkins (super reach), Rutgers, and Boston. Boston I have an interview with (as now mentioned twice previously lol), and I don't anticipate hearing from Rutgers for another month or so since the deadline JUST passed. ------------------------------------ Just to note: Rutgers is currently reviewing applications and after speaking with a faculty member, their cohort will be a similar number to the current one (so roughly 11 students)... Last year with a truncated admissions period, they got about 70something applications... You can BET this year it will be even more competitive. I say this to say, a rejection doesn't mean you're any less of a candidate or scholar. There's nothing wrong with you as a person. Rejections from highly competitive doctoral programs is not a rejection of your personhood or character. It's simply a numbers game and a matter of fit with whatever cohort/faculty projects a school has going on. Hundreds of applications for 11-25 spots is a gamble. Doesn't mean you're any less capable of doing the work. If you didn't get in (or don't get in) this application cycle, but your heart of hearts tells you that this is what you were meant to do... Then go back to the drawing board for next year. At least that's what I plan to do should I not get in anywhere.
  4. Can I PM you about your Boston interview? Mine is the 2nd week in February, so I'm definitely interested in hearing how you thought it went and how you're prepping for it.
  5. I got a request to interview for Boston's DrPH program. My interview will be the second week in February. I'm excited and hope it's the first of a few. I refuse to stress myself out over this waiting. Old threads said we'd hear back final answers by March. So if I don't hear final decisions in 12 weeks, then maybe I'll stress. Until then, it is what it is. I'm also planning to apply to at least 1 more program, and possibly a few others.
  6. I also had an all over the place score for the GRE... But if you have great grades (which I did not - cummulative that is), great letters of recommendation, and a great statement of purpose... Why not you? This is how I approached all of my applications. In speaking with faculty from each of the schools, they've said they think I have an excellent research/practicum idea and career objectives. So sure, there are candidates that are more qualified than I am on paper, but if given the chance to get in front of someone for an interview, you better believe I'm bringing in everything I've got. So again, why not me? And why not you! Be confident... Because if not this year... Then we do it again next year! One way or another, it'll happen for us. Be encouraged!

    Newark, NJ

I live in one of the surrounding suburbs of Newark and went to Rutgers for my MPH. I suggest 1) having a car. Newark is accessible by public transportation (bus, different NJ Transit rails) - but since COVID, you may not feel sage with the area. Surrounding suburbs are the Oranges, Kearny, Arlington, etc... Essex County itself has some cute areas (including where I grew up). Newark is also still very much up and coming. Newark and the surrounding suburbs are building new (and nice) apartments everywhere. Anywhere on the "Midtown Direct" gives you direct access to NYC within 45 minutes or less by train. Rents for a 1 bedroom will probably run you anywhere between $1250 for a less safe area (but still might be renovated!) up to 1900 for a one bedroom... It all depends on the budget. If you have questions, feel free to reach out via PM. Also - if someone is worried about crime, just always be aware of your surroundings. That's for any major city. Watch your surroundings and get to know your neighbors. If you get to know your neighbors, folks will look out for you.
  8. Question: Are these sections really necessary if we are adding our CV? None of the schools I'm applying to say it's a part of the application. How do you go about adding to this section? This is like doing a job application that asks for your resume, and then makes you input your entire work experience into a separate format. It feels redundant.
  9. Hi everyone, Since schools the schools I'm applying to don't require it, is it necessary to include "Experiences," "Additional Experiences", and "Achievements" in my SOPHAS application? It feels redundant if you have a CV/Resume and none of the programs specifically ask for those sections... Any suggestions/feedback on that? I have 3 days to finalize this app!
  10. Hi, I feel so late in the game. I took the GRE and BOMBED the quantitative portion. However, I know that my LORs are strong, and my experience is also strong for a DrPH. Would anyone be willing to read my SOP? I feel like this is where I need the most help. If you're willing, I can send you a PM with my SOP. Thanks all! Good luck everyone!
  11. I'm so glad I found this thread! My stats are nothing to write home about, but I'm applying to various programs anyway. I will be applying to DrPH programs because I want to develop, implement, and evaluate programs that aim to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in MCH, and do this through a faith-based lens. This sounds VERY specific, but it's what I hope to do. My undergrad GPA was terrible = 2.6 MPH + MCH Certificate = 3.91 (Health Education Behavioral Science background) (unfortunately, it took me a while to finish my MPH for a myriad of reasons, but hopefully that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt). I am 2 years post MPH, but have 8 years of work experience in public health - started in adolescent pregnancy prevention, then to coalition coordinator, a small stint at a small consulting company, followed by VA, and now a health educator for a local health department. I am retaking the GRE (haven't taken it in 10 years) on 11/16 and praying! I only need the GRE for 2 schools I will be applying to, so I'm hoping for the best! When I took the GRE in 2010, my scores were still out of 800! (V: 510, Q:640, AW: 4.5) Schools I'll be applying to: Tulane, BUSPH, JHSPH, GW, UArizona, Rutgers and (maybe) Colorado). Reaching out to faculty from these schools who work in MCH or use a CBPR approach to designing programs. Some have answered and I've had great conversations, others haven't responded. LORs: 1 supervisor (expert in risk communications) and 2 former professors (one of which is the chair of a department). I'm praying a good personal statement helps my case! Good luck everyone!
