I accepted an offer from the waitlist at University of Delaware, which was one of my top choices from the beginning - so everyone: don't lose hope! I think this will be a big week as far as people making choices, shifting lists, etc.
I'm taking myself out of consideration at KU - hopefully that adjusts something for someone
Also, @cassidyaxxthat's amazing news! I'm sending very positive vibes for you (and I'm currently on the east coast, so they don't need to travel far!)

Hey all - wanted to mention as well if anyone was hesitant / nervous about checking in with a program I did yesterday and it was worth it.
I reached out to KU (one of my waitlists) and asked for an update if possible, given the upcoming 4/15 deadline. I didn't get the best of news (funding constraints, budget cuts reducing class size, the COVID-mess usual) but the director was very kind and transparent about the chances of my admission.

I just found a rejection on my portal. No email though. You should check for an update, too. Good luck
haha, thank you!! The email from Gradcafe was below a notification from Fordham.
Also rejected, but like... credit to whoever wrote that rejection email, lol.
2 waitlists for me this season - staying positive, both programs I am really invested in! If not, next year it is.
Good luck everyone!!!

I think is Syracuse is one of the few schools that has not made any decisions at all. (Unless those who were admitted do not post to Gradcafe).
I think Rochester is just trolling at this point. That supposed one-two day wait is going on to a week!
I didn’t apply to Santa Barbara, so I have no input on this one! But Fordham is the another that I’m waiting on.
Also still waiting on Fordham! I saw acceptances a while back, which makes me nervous, but I'm beginning to wonder what's up!

I've seen a few posts like this before, but I'm wondering if I should reach out again to BC and reaffirm my interest in their program as well as see about my place on the waitlist? I've been accepted to two more conferences since I submitted my application, and received two awards. I'm wondering if it could be a kind of two birds one stone sort of email, or if I should wait to send an email like this when we get closer to April.
I was also kind of wondering at what point it might make sense to reach out to programs that waitlisted a while back.
I think in your case because you have many updates - it is probably worth it! I'd imagine it can't hurt, right?

So LSU reached out for a Zoom interview. I replied saying that I've already made a decision. I didn't want to waste their time, to be honest. I hope someone else who wants to go there can be interviewed instead!
Congratulations on making your decision! If you're comfortable, would you mind sharing your choice? I am waitlisted at one of the schools on your list, so I'd love to ask you some questions about the program/school if you were able to vet them
If not I totally understand though!

Is anyone else waiting to hear back from Fordham? I know acceptances were sent out but they literally will not just reject me...it was my top choice so it really hurts
I am still waiting as well - based on past years it looks like it might be this week, at least for waitlist/rejections

You are definitely not alone! I am a first gen student as well (though it's my third cycle applying). It is SO hard to be a first gen student battling through the application cycle for the first time, and I had no idea the amount of etiquette I would need to learn for my time in graduate school. If you ever need any help, you can always DM me on here! I'd be more than willing to share follow-up emails I've sent and what not.
Thank you so much
I've been so glad to find this forum bc without it for many of us, I'm guessing, our parents/friends are not familiar with the process or the unique type of stress attached, haha! Before finding this my entire life was googling phrases like, "what am i allowed to say to a director of a grad program" lol
-
Ahhh I appreciate this thread @cassidyaxx!!
I am waitlisted at two programs right now (both are top choices, one is my top choice).
I am also a first gen and first time applicant, so I don't know the process/etiquette here at all. I've been working on follow-up emails for a recruitment event all weekend. I know I'm over thinking it... but tell me I'm not alone? lol.
It makes me feel better knowing others are in the same boat.

I was at my personal training session today and was *sucking wind*. My trainer asked me if I've been stressed or have had a rough few days.
Me: *remembering last night I ugly cried to my boyfriend for over an hour about how stressed I was about hearing back from Notre Dame and getting off of waitlists and that I can't plan anything right now until I know which is driving me crazy* Also me: "hmm.. no I can't think of anything that would be doing this"
I hope the best for you!
I am in a similar boat - two waitlists ? trying to be hopeful, but it is extremely stressful!

If comfortable, let me know if you hear anything back. I may want to send an email too...assuming rejection but still haven't received any updates via portal.
I just received a response
I was rejected, but the director was very nice/insightful about my application's review - he did mention that admissions would be posting the decisions shortly. Although, either way, it may be worth reaching out to him for some sort of feedback? I didn't ask for that specifically, but he offered in via a response about the status.
I hope this helps!

@ whoever posted the acceptance to the Brooklyn College MA program - I went there and had a great experience!
If you have any questions about the program and/or faculty feel free to PM me!

Your situation could be different! I recommend reaching out. The director is very kind and complimented me on my application. It should feel good to know that your application has potential!
Ahh okay that's good to know that they were nice about it! That's true, I should reach out - reading back in the thread I saw you're early modern and I'm 19th/sometimes 20th, lol. So maybe there's something else up w/ mine or another batch!
Thank you so much
Edited to add: I'm going to reach out tomorrow AM if anyone is following, to get within "business hours" (even though COVID has somewhat ruined the concept...)

Received response about the CUNY status. Those who have not received results were close to being admitted but we’re in specialties that did not take a large amount of people. When people accepted their offers, there was no use in putting us on the waitlist, because all spots in our specialities had been taken.
this is disappointing but helpful to know, I guess!

Reaching out to CUNY to find out more about the status of those of us who have yet to hear back. Will update the forum when (or if) I receive a response.
you are an angel. I have been teaching all morning and this is LIVING in the back of my mind.

yup! nothing yet.

I got an email today from CUNY that I am waitlisted. Hope you and the other CUNY tea leaf-readers got okay news too!!
ahhh I hope you end up getting in still nothing in my portal, so I'm guessing a rejection is coming, but that's okay!

Thanks for the update! Mine still shows all of my things as submitted but doesn't have anywhere for me to look at a decision about my application.
Can anyone give me advise if I should reach out to ask when I'll hear back? Or do I just wait it out?
11 hours ago, Lighthouse Lana said:HI! I'm in the same boat as you. I'm expecting a rejection and I'm not sure why they split up decision notifications in such an annoying way... Let me know if you decide to reach out to them!
I'm in the same boat still via Tufts - I don't have anything on the portal to view other than "submitted"

Tufts, I know you saw that big typo smack-dab in the middle of my SOP. We both know what happens now. Stop being a jerk and let me join the "no Tufts for me" club.
Omg this is me rn too! Lol. solidarity.

I was the person asking about UNebraska on results.. wanted to move my question here, because it might be less annoying.
I am not sure which portal to check for my status or if it posts on ApplyWeb (does anyone else have a school app on here + know how to view results?). I also checked the MyRed app and I can't see anything. I'm assuming it's a rejection as I haven't heard and the app date was 12/1 - but I can't find the letter! (a more optimistic version of me would think waitlist, haha).
If anyone knows about this school or has results from them I would super appreciate it

I think it’s safe to say that everyone still waiting on CUNY is trying to read the tea leaves and figure out where they stand and why. To that end, I think our respective readings might be made easier if we mentioned our areas of interest: I’m pretty broadly working in post-45 novel, ecocriticism, postcolonial, theories of the avant-garde, and an irregular category that doesn’t really exist but which I’ll call the rhetoric of finance.
hahaha - happy to read the tea leaves with you. I'm (primarily) an Americanist with a large focus on the nineteenth-century and American Gothic novels - however, I also write on adaptation that takes me into other periods (traditional forms of adaptation and emerging - fanfiction, etc.)
53 minutes ago, queenofcarrotflowers said:I guess it's typical of lit students to be particularly sensitive to this, but a nicely-worded rejection in an email from an actual person really softens the blow of rejection in comparison to a poorly-worded, generic letter from no particular person posted on a portal. Especially when that letter costs $120 lol
I actually have really appreciated the schools that just email the rejection. I don't mind the portal logins, but every second of extra anxiety counts! lol!

Looks like formatting fucked me. This is what I was written to by a PoI:
While I cannot speak for the rest of the Admissions Committee, I can tell you that I thought your research project was strong. However, the application itself did not appear to be well organized or written. I'm not sure whether you had to convert your statement and your writing sample from one format to another, but it was very difficult to read. I'm afraid that this issue prevented your application from making our shortlist, even though, again, I thought that your research project was quite interesting.
I'd advise that you spend some time carefully reviewing and revising your statement before applying again next year.
Thoughts, people?
Do you think the real reason is something else? Can formatting truly fuck you? Should I have been given another chance to patch things up? (I had changed file formats for submission, and that did leave undesirable effects). If you have an advisor and/or professor in your current dept (or previous dept) I'd send this to them too if you haven't already! I can't tell if by format they mean, page set-up or in-text organization. However, I'm guessing the latter because if it were a file type issue that seems wanting for a very different reply than this - "difficult to read" is actually a relatively ambiguous statement... difficult how?
One of my profs who read my statement recommended a set-up / organization for the content in my statement, which I otherwise wouldn't have gravitated towards, so it could also be that the dept. that told you this expects a certain formatting. Although, this is only a guess... I hope that this feedback doesn't discourage you, though! It's promising that you have a strong research project.
54 minutes ago, kirbs005 said:I don't think it's a requirement either, they assume you're still interested since you applied and are on the waitlist. I just replied saying "thanks" and that I'd contact them with any questions. I'd re-read the email you got and then decide.
I replied to the director saying thank you and that I was excited about the program - although I was told not to be extensive (at least this early). Best of luck to you!

Checked my portal and it shows as submitted but that there's an admissions decision available under my recommenders. Holding out hope for you two!
Ahh thank you this is good to know! I double-checked in case I missed something and I still have no updates. Maybe they have individuals on the committee, broken apart by focus, updating the portal? or reporting back at different times?

Yes - same to you!! It's so stressful trying to figure out what goes on behind the scenes... full knowing we can't really, haha! Hopefully good news for both of us

Choosing an English PhD program
in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Posted · Edited by brockdenbrown802
I'm going to try and offer some things to consider - but I also want to mention I know much more about KU than UF (I was waitlisted there this sem but accepted another offer) - but I did do some research into the program and sorta the area.
That (slight?) disclaimer aside:
- I do think your funding (the 17k) will go further in Lawrence than in Gainesville. I would also look at the other threads on this site about grad students who went to these schools - they often talk about housing, etc. However - I do think it would be *okay* in both areas. As in, I don't think you will struggle immensely in that area of Florida, I just think Kansas is overall a cheaper place to live. That being said - if you are teaching in the summer, calculate how much more that adds for the year!
- 4 years sounds short to me (I also applied with an MA). 5 is more traditional, but that doesn't necessarily mean UF won't prepare you for publication. Also, if you haven't already, perhaps ask for more clarity around extensions? How many are available, how many students need them, etc.
- re: faculty: maybe - if you have the time - reach out and try to set up some calls / chats with professors from both (you may have already done this, but figured I'd mention it regardless!). I know this may not be possible given your schedule, but it might help put you at ease when it comes to faculty!
However - based on your post it seems like IF UF had given you the 5 years of funding, you would have accepted. Forgive me if that's an over-read into your situation - but I also think it can't hurt to speak frankly with the director about this and ask for concrete information around the 5th year. I completely understand not wanting to put yourself in a position where you need a fifth year and there are not enough resources to do so.
I hope this helps - I wish you the best of luck with your situation.
EDITING TO ADD: CONGRATULATIONS BTW!!! I feel like my message was not exciting in tone - but it's very exciting that you have both of these opportunities!!!
