Seeing some mid-December interview days on the Results page, which is making me worried that these programs are going to try to force applicants to commit to admission before they have even heard back from other schools. Hopefully that is not the case, but keep in mind that if it does, this is predatory behavior. Schools adhere to the April 15 deadline out of respect and fairness. Be careful out there, friends!
  3. Have you considered looking into cultural anthropology? I don't have any specific recommendations for professors but I do have a degree in anthropology, and I know from personal experience that body image as a function of culture is often discussed. My thought process is that you could package communications media as a reflection of culture.
  4. GRE: 145Q; 155V; 6W. 6 of my 19 schools asked for GRE scores - received interview invites from 3 of those 6. These are estimates, I don't remember where I wrote down my ETS password GPA: 3.8 BA; 3.9 MAResearch: 2 years at time of application; 1 pub under review (second author), 4 posters (2 first author, 2 third). Leading role on a study I helped design. Clinical: ~280 direct contact clinical work from MA program. Full time salaried work in clinical role at a very prominent science institution, which definitely helped. EC: Very involved in community service for the past five years but it's unrelated to psychology. Involved in student organizations since my BA, evidenced by significant leading roles. Two semesters of TA. Leadership award from faculty upon graduation from MA.
  5. Wholly agree; my experience was similar. Further, it gave me an opportunity to fine-tune my career objectives after "trying on" different clinical roles. Being able to speak knowledgeably about my experiences was an asset in interviews, as after graduation from my MA program I was able to get a paid clinical position in a highly respected science institution. I was also able to anticipate application rejection with the comfort that I am still qualified for a career in psychology; not necessarily the one I wanted, but one that I am happy with.

  7. I think that refers to 40 total offers for the application season, not 40 initial offers. As in, if you’re high on the waitlist it looks like there’s a decent chance.

  9. Follow @PsychChatter on Twitter. They have a monthly psych jobs thread that lists opportunities - It's very common, but if you want more concrete data I would look up the ratio of offers extended to offers accepted in each program (I first saw that data in the Insider's Guide, not sure if it's available elsewhere). If you see that the program extended 18 offers last year and 6 were accepted, there's a pretty good chance you'll be pulled from the waitlist. if a program extends 6 offers and 6 were accepted, less so.
  10. It’s an aggregate from this current application season; I’ve attended three Counseling interviews (and one Clinical, but I excluded examples from that interview because it wasn’t relevant to OP’s question). I’m in the offer stage at the moment so I have not begun attending.

  13. Okay this is terrifying. I’m currently holding two unofficial verbal offers and I was feeling bad about that until I read your post. My mentor’s advice was to not release any offers until it’s official, and I totally understand why now. I’m so sorry that this happened to you!
  14. I would definitely be interested in hearing perspectives on this! Social media is not something that’s typically covered in (my experience) traditional application advice, but I found it useful to be following PIs on Twitter, for example, because they often post about their interests, current projects, or any lab meet and greets. But that’s something I picked up on maybe 6 months ago. I want to help future applicants navigate these tools effectively.
  15. Piggybacking on this thread to ask: does anyone have any tips for navigating academic twitter/essential accounts to follow as an applicant? I’m putting together a doc for next year’s applicants in my current lab and there’s a lot of social media involved in academic networking now. Any thoughts?
  16. I can only speak about Counseling questions (didn’t apply to/interview with PsyD programs), but the questioning on social justice was intense and very self-reflective. Examples: What does social justice mean to you? When was the last time you made a micro aggression? What did you do about it? Do you have any recommendations for social justice media - podcasts, books, articles? What is cultural competence? Do you consider yourself to be culturally competent? What part of your identity, cultural background, or personal biases will affect your work with clients? You have a client with [insert client info], what will you need to take into consideration if they express suicidal ideation? For a better understanding, I would do some research on situation interviews and how to answer those questions. Keep in mind that I think the professors know that these are “big” questions and aren’t looking for perfection, just for you to show you’re aware and humble. Good luck!
  17. Sorry, I misread! I am thisclose to calling or emailing to ask. And maybe asking for a refund on my app fees. I understand a loss of funding, and $100 is a high application fee to ask if the status of the program was in question.
  18. Interview invites for UH Manoa are still going out? I heard that one of the listed faculty on the website was not accepting students anymore due to funding issues.
  19. Do you have a competing offer? That might be your foot in the door to gently and respectfully inquire if there is any further information the program can provide, in order to aid in your decision-making process. They might not be able to comment on your specific status, but they might be able to say something general about whether offers have been extended yet.
  20. I would like to second this. Many Counseling programs are also funded; I'd rather attend a funded Counseling program than an unfunded Clinical one. The ending licensure is the same and the doors that Clinical may or may not open for you do not compensate for the debt you would incur in an unfunded program.
  21. I have been to four virtual interviews this cycle, so I have a lot of thoughts on what works! The best organized interview I had used separate Zoom links for each individual meeting. Some interviews used breakout rooms, but those can get hectic when there are a lot of applicants and one poor interview day coordinator trying to keep track of everyone. It can be done, but there's a steep learning curve. It was a lot simpler when there were separate links and applicants had the responsibility of entering and exiting rooms as outlined by their schedule. In terms of interview timing, if at all possible, I found that hour long individual interviews with faculty were best. It's already hard to get a sense of someone if the individual interview is only 30 minutes when we're in person - it's almost impossible over a virtual platform. I really appreciated it when I had an opportunity to have a real, substantial conversation with the PI before having to navigate to my next appointment. As offers are extended, I'm having to base my decision to move across the country on extremely short interview windows with no sense of the campus or having met these people in person. Getting to know their personality and who I am moving across the country to work with is essential. Having at least 30 minutes where I was not expected to be on camera was a blessing. I could take my blazer off, walk my dogs, eat a snack...and with that said, please do not schedule on-camera meetings for lunchtime. I know it can be efficient to give presentations at lunch, but the anxiety of having to eat lunch on camera in my interview outfit was a nightmare. I did not pay attention at all in those meetings. I just watched myself make eating faces on camera with growing dread and self-judgement. I know not everyone is like me, but I think at least having a significant amount of time (more than 10 minutes) off camera is really helpful in getting through a whole day of being "on." One of the programs I interviewed with had a waiting room where applicants could get in face time with current students, but there was no expectation of attending that. Applicants could do whatever with their break. I really liked this method. Lastly, having a short lab informational meeting prior to the interview day was great. These meetings took care of the research-focused questions prior to the individual interviews, so I could spend whatever interview time there was really trying to get to know the PI. There's a lot crammed into those 20-30 minute interview blocs, so the opportunity to discuss research/research direction as a group took care of those "Where do you see your lab in 5 years?" types of questions. I hope this was helpful!
  22. Does anyone know anything about the validity of the claim that the University of Hawaii Manoa isn’t accepting any students this year? I’m going to be livid if I spent $100 in application fees for a 0% chance at admission.
  23. I got the same one! Which program did you apply to? I went with Clinical-Community so I’m thinking that their purely Clinical invites already went out and now they’re focusing on the combined program. If that’s not the case.......I’m lost.
  24. I try to go as broad as possible! Trends in the field, attributes of successful students, the environment of the program, things they wish they knew before starting a PhD. My favorite thing to ask is how they would describe the values of the program, the department, and the university.
