  1. Hi folks. Glad this thread is up and running! I got the impression from JHU that classes will be virtual the first quarter. And I know for a fact that USF is allowing students to be virtual the first semester. What I’m curious about is how you all plan to move during the pandemic? Even if both myself and my husband are vaccinated, our 11 month old won’t be, so we’re trying to figure out how we’ll get halfway across the country. ?‍♀️
  2. Definitely, don't delay having kids, if you feel ready! There's this quote that I LOVE from Henry Rollins that I think is so applicable: "No such thing as spare time No such thing as free time No such thing as down time All you got is lifetime Go" As someone who was notorious for "When I do X, then I can focus on Y," this quote has always resonated. So definitely don't put off life for grad school because there's no such thing. You're living.
  3. Yes! This is my first. Every day I’m learning so much and man, I love it. I love all the smiles and laughs, and how fast he’s flying through milestones. I especially love how happy he is, despite the world falling apart outside our front door. Being a parent is super hard but I’d be a lesser person without this little guy. okay. I’m going to go mist up someplace else. *sniff* anyone heard from any schools? *sniff*
  4. I think your first step might be to get a picture of where you are on the waitlist. If you’re up there, then put the wallet away and ready yourself for your number to be called (if 80% accept, then someone isn’t). If not, I don’t know... maybe reach out to your PI and see what the temperature is for a move like that. Just be 100% sure that the *only* reason you weren’t accepted in this first round is because of funding. Also, I want to say two things: 1) I greatly admire that you’re fighting for your dreams and trying to make stuff happen. But... 2) You also have to have some trust that universe will put the right thing in your path. It’s very possible JHU will come knocking. But if it doesn’t, maybe it’s for the best...
  5. My kid took his first steps today! I'm excited but also scared because I am totally not ready to chase him around everywhere. haha. Anyone else with good news today?! Let's cleanse the palate, burn some metaphorical sage, and move on to positivity.
  6. Arizona is not showing me any love and I live here! ?‍♀️ Anyone out there apply to the University of Arizona (Health Behavior Health Promotion)? It’s been radio silent, and I don’t have a good sense of if they interview or not. I wonder if there has been any movement (like I’m willing to count a status change from submitted to under review as a W at this point. ?).
  7. Nice turnaround time! They’re doing something right over there.
  8. Ya’ll, maybe I’m just too old or just an odd duck but I don’t view anyone here as competition. I only applied to schools I really dug, so there’s no losing for me. And if someone got into one of my programs, then maybe they’ll be in my cohort (because that is a thing) and if not, I can say “hey I know someone with similar interests at X school. Maybe we can collaborate!” I say all that to say: this ain’t the hunger games. We’re all looking to alleviate real people from real suffering. Why the hell wouldn’t I cheer you on?? I want every one of you to be rockstars because myself, my family, and my community benefit. It’s self-destructive nonsense to think otherwise.
  9. Yes!! I was wondering how long until something crept from under the toll bridge. Guys, our thread must be really HOT to attract such talent. Upvote for punctuation and bullet points. ?
  10. Interesting... although I wonder from a stance of equity and inclusion what it would mean for low-income students who don’t have quite the same privilege. Would allowing students entry who can bankroll their education (via loans, parents, savings etc) disincentivize schools from funding students without those kind of means? Also, I wonder if someone funding their own education in some ways be at a disadvantage down the road, considering others would have had paid research and teaching assistantships, while they have not.
  11. Ugh. I feel you. I hope you hear soon. Limbo is no fun. You've received other admits, correct? If not, I'm sure something will pan out (although I'm crossing my fingers for you for JHU)!
  12. I think I read in the 2020 forum that about 60-70% of those admitted to JHU accept, so there is movement! What I can't tell you is if that's specific to your program. ?‍♀️ But CONGRATS on being placed on their shortlist! Your app and interview must have been pretty darn impressive!
  13. Ooooo! Hey! That’s exciting. We’ve got to do a postmortem and compare notes! Hehe. DM, for sure! And yep, all on Friday! That is good to know! I’d love to hear about all the good and bad things about USF, from your vantage. Im thinking about starting a little email list/group for fellow MCH’ers here so we can share research, commiserate, cheer each other on, and collaborate on projects. What do you think?
  14. Ah, I see. Okay. No, no word on future semesters, just the Fall. But with things being so fluid, I don’t blame them for not projecting out more.
  15. I have no clue! Sorry. If I’m virtual though, I personally don’t plan on moving until I can do so safely with a little one, preferably with both myself and my husband vaccinated. Also, how would they know if you moved or not?
  16. For folks who are debating whether or not to defer next year: I got word from USF that you can start the Fall virtually, if you choose. I know for some people that's a turn-off, because you want the standard graduate experience. But for those of us who were thinking of deferring because of the pandemic and the uncertainty of a move or attending in-person classes, this is good news! I'm hopeful that other schools offer the same options.
  17. Nope. I just expressed a lot of gratitude at the end of the interview and left it at that. I can almost guarantee you that it won't hurt your chances to forgo that step and would be really really surprised if it put someone over the top.
  18. Whew! Can't wait to hear! Hopkins is actually not my first choice. I am in LOVE with the Community and Family Health program at USF. I got accepted a while back and I was all but packed and ready to go but...when JHU calls, you pick up the damn phone! So we'll see what happens!
  19. You might surprise yourself! Could be a cool comeback story. Thought you were out and then BAM...you're on a one way to Baltimore, baby! ? I'm interviewing for the population, family, and reproductive health program and am specifically interested in the maternal, fetal, and perinatal health track. I believe that this will be my last interview (I applied to five programs--and it looks like only 3 interview), so I'm looking forward to getting this phase behind me! This process is costly in more ways than one.
  20. For those waiting on JHU: if you get accepted, are you taking it? Is it top of the list? I think my own JHU fate will be handed down mid Feb (interview is Friday).
  21. One more thing to add to this and previous conversations on this topic: Please remember that you are also interviewing them. You will spend 4-5+ of your life surrounded by those people, jumping through their hoops, pouring your soul into their research, and hoping you’re better for it. Don’t be so humbled by being interviewed or considered for a slot that you forget that they’re just as lucky to be speaking with YOU. So have a little swagger, keep your head high, and ask the questions you need to to make the right decision for yourself, your family (if you have one), and your career.
  22. Woohooo!! That’s what I like to hear! Yesterday was a damn blood bath, so I’m so grateful to see folks hearing good news. We got this, ya’ll!
  23. For those that were accepted or waiting for possible admits to programs that don’t interview: How are you evaluating these programs and determining if you’ll accept, especially since visits aren’t happening? Im waiting for one such school that I *think* doesn’t interview (University of Arizona) and am wondering how to assess for fit.
