  1. hey y'all - wanted to post here because I feel like it's slightly more anonymous than Draft (although anyone could probably compare notes and figure out who I am pretty easily at least I have plausible deniability here, lol). I know a very specific few people were talking about Hollins and I wanted to let those folks know that I've decided to decline my offer there for a few reasons (that I'd be happy to DM about)! but, if you're on the waitlist, look for movement there soon! idk how their waitlist works or if it's ranked but even though it feels wild to be making a choice so permanent my anxiety is soothed a little by the idea that someone else is getting a spot at the school that might be a perfect fit for them. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
  2. just heard from Hollins - I'm in for CNF with funding info. I know someone asked about them recently so I thought I'd share. I'm torn - the funding HU is offering me (a first-year fellowship that covers tuition remission and "the opportunity to apply for" a second-year TAship) isn't guaranteed past the first year, and the other acceptance I've gotten so far is guaranteed all 3 years with a GA from the jump. during the app process I was really drawn to HU's genre fluidity, creative ethos, and some dreamy mountain living. fuck!!!!
  3. no one.....except those of us applying to the nonfiction writing program lol
  4. im starting to think marshall is, like, a really long-con performance art piece. theres no way anyone is that obtuse and malevolent. right?
  5. :') thank you D!!!! means a lot to me.
  6. freaking out y'all - i just got an email that i'm in for CNF at USF with a GA offer (I think they offer that to all accepted students but not sure). i've really been through it these last few months - thank you to everyone here for being so supportive and helpful ❤️❤️❤️
  7. this is sort of unrelated to the topic at hand but I just started listening to the podcast The Maris Review (it's so good) and I can't stop thinking about the episode with Kate Zambreno. She is so fucking cool and smart. I could listen to her talk about writing for hours.
  8. I mentioned three writers who have heavily influenced the project I'm working on - I felt like it was important to be specific about the direction I'm trying to work towards and where I might sort of locate myself on that bookshelf, if that makes sense. All were or are women memoirists/essayists, which I am. I'm *hoping* it came off in the tone I intended, which was aspirational and not comparative.
  9. interesting that you bring this up as it's something i've been thinking about, too - one of the schools at the top of my list published an essay of mine last spring. that has to work in my favor, right? or do you think they even remember? i didn't explicitly mention that they'd chosen my work before, and now I'm thinking that was a missed opportunity. really i just need to hear *anything* - i'm losing it. making really elaborate snacks and watching way too much bad tv while in purgatory.
  10. hi! just wanted to chime in, as i grew up in tampa and lived in gainesville for about 6 years. your mileage may vary, based on your interests and personality, but gainesville is one of my favorite places in florida. a few things i'd mention (and keep in mind this is all based on pre-COVID experience): - if you want the big-state-school-student-focused town life, you can't beat Gainesville. Even if you're not a sports fan, the athletics sort of run the town, and it's easy to get swept up in the enthusiasm/celebrations/tailgating, which can be so fun. My entire family were Gators, and I never gave a shit until I lived there and we won back-to-back championships and everyone partied in the street and took a three-day vacation. That said, I made sure never to drive and be careful on my bike on gamedays - drunk frat boys and alumni can be dicey. If that's *not* your bag, though, don't rule it out- northeast of campus is weird, and full of hippies and punks and music and food and a thriving community of political organizers and community groups. Gainesville is a blue pocket surrounded by deep red, which makes for a really interesting slice of the south that I don't think most people know exists. If you drive a few miles in any direction the nature is incredible - dozens of natural springs and underwater caves to dive, the Devil's Millhopper and Paynes Prairie...just so much to do and the ecosystem is fascinating. - I personally hate Tampa, even though I am applying to school there and grew up there. That might have a lot to do with the area where I grew up and personal shit (poverty, proximity to the Air Force Base, etc), though, so that's just my opinion. Tampa is close to the best beaches in Florida (IMO) in St. Pete, but doesn't actually have beach access of its own. Living in St. Pete is lovely, but would mean a 30+ min commute to class. Additionally, housing costs have skyrocketed as the city has been rapidly changing - huge influx of young professionals and luxury condos/development happening. The best way I can explain it is Tampa is the Midtown Manhattan to St. Pete's Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a beach. However, USF is a great school with access to tons of resources (they do a lot of partnerships with the Poynter Institute) and if you like nightlife and Caribbean food (especially Cuban food!) Ybor City is one of my favorite neighborhoods to visit. Sorry for the lengthy response, but I love Florida *because* each region is so wildly different, and I think a lot of people who aren't from here imagine the whole state is like South Beach when that's just not the case - and that's a wonderful thing. ❤️
  11. whats uppp fellow floridians (and everyone else in this group)!!! I did my undergrad in NYC (hiiii @largeheartedboy its RK) and am back here (pinellas county) in the weird MFA app process gap year. i didn't apply to any nyc schools for a few reasons. the main one: i lost my job during the first months of lockdown and my partner was ready to leave after a decade there, so we moved back to be near family when our lease was up. looking forward to beach-filled summer to either celebrate my future plans or drown my sorrows with rum runners. hopefully we can meet up (somewhere far away from I-4) sometime this summer. <3
