Yea the appropriate response by the program would have been to reach out to all applicants, explain the situation and then ASK if you want your application to be reviewed for Fall 2023. Then if you say yes, no refund. But to just automatically keep your money and say we reviewed for Fall 2023 is so wrong. Who even knows if those applicants want to go there for Fall 2023. You can't keep money for a school year people didn't apply for.

I emailed them today and heard back. Yes the program isn’t accepting this year. *Apparently* they did interview people for 2023 entry, but I’m not sure I really believe them lol, I think it’s just an excuse to not give people their application fee money back. But that last part is just my opinion!

every person that applied was scammed.. the money was taken under false pretences.. and it's especially interesting as we have yet to hear from anyone who is on this supposed shortlist... overall, this is very unfortunate

This is so beyond upsetting. Not only did people put in time, effort, and money into these applications, but they also had hope. and now Guelph just turns their back and says "nevermind we cant take anyone this year"...?????? absolute bs in my opinion. Also short listing applicants to interview for NEXT YEAR is so beyond stupid because if they get an offer elsewhere they're going to take that instead of hoping that they'll make it through interviews for a spot at Guelph. Universities are so heartless, all they see is business and money, even if it's at the expense of their own students/applicants. Very very upsetting. I am so sorry for all of us who applied to Guelph this year, I share your anger. Also Guelph better prepare for the strongly-worded email I will be sending out to them. In no case is it accceptable for them to keep the money and not accept any students. Even if they did interview some or make a shortlist of those they would like to interview for next year, the fact remains that they aren't taking any students this year. That in itself is enough grounds to warrant a refund to every applicant. It feels like our emotions and time were played with. SOOOO upset about this right now.

Lol wow, such a wild response. I honestly think they're using the excuse of shortlisting people for next year as a way to not refund applicants. But the reality is, people applied for Fall 2022 admission, not Fall 2023. So if you're not accepting any students for Fall 2022, you should refund them. Their response almost implies that they won't be accepting applications next year because they already have their shortlist. However, I would be shocked if they didn't let people apply next year, so they can collect application fees again lol.
The lack of transparency by only saying "unforeseen circumstances" and waiting for people to reach out to them rather than sending a mass email to explain the situation is also a major red flag. Definitely not a program I would consider applying to in the future.

I believe those who applied for McGill counselling project stream all got their results. I've talked to some grad students in counselling psychology in McGill and apparently they have different application process for the two streams. Admission decisions for the project program come usually in mid February to early March (it could be later for those who didn't go to McGill for undergrad and didn't know their supervisors beforehand). Internship results usually come later in early April (these days).

I worked as a healthcare assistant at the psychiatric department at a hospital for a year and am working as a school counsellor now. I would say the psychiatric department in the hospital has been an ideal place to start my career, as I could understand the duties of different healthcare professionals and how they cooperate, and it was very easy to seek advice from doctors, psychologists, and nurses. I am very interested in helping youth with mental healthcare needs, so having direct communication with youth with different mental disorders was a very interesting experience to me. Besides, if you are interested in the healthcare field but not knowing which occupation you'd like to pursue in particular, a year in the hospital could probably help clarifying your interest. The cost of working in the hospital is having to do many repetitive duties, e.g. cleaning, checking body temperature etc. But since I observed and learnt a lot about how healthcare professionals communicate with patients and their caregivers, I would still say it is worth it.
I then started to work as a school counsellor, as it is allowed to work as a school counsellor before gaining a MA counselling in my country. I don't think it is possible in Canada, but fyi, I enjoy the job very much as well. However, working as a counsellor in an environment where the primary goal is not promoting psychological health can be challenging, since you have to work more independently to help your clients while meeting the demands of the organisation. I could not imagine how helpless it could be if I have not been worked with and supervised by a team of professionals in the hospital before. It is not easy, but there's definitely more job satisfaction than working as an healthcare assistant.
On top of those working experiences, I also volunteer as a hotline counsellor at a NGO. answering calls from women and youth who experienced domestic violences. I am not sure if my choices of jobs are right, as I do not much research experiences after I graduated. So... will see how it goes, and best of luck to you!

I spent the last year of my undergraduate degree working at a Social Psychology Lab and as a volunteer at a local suicide line. After graduating at the start of the pandemic, I was unemployed for 6 months before finding work as support staff at a shelter. I've been with them 6 months now and also got hired as a paid crisis responder at the suicide line I was volunteering at. I think I tried my best to find opportunities, volunteer or otherwise that would allow me to work with people on a personal level, affecting their emotional states. It helped me realize I wanted to pursue counselling!

Hi! I was hoping to hear from anyone who took a year or years off after their undergrad to gain more experience and improve their application for following years. What kinds of jobs did you get that were good for related experience and how did you find/get these positions?
    Thanks so much!

Hi! I know 3 or 4 people put on the results page that they got interviews for mcmaster msc psychotherapy... do we think they have contacted all of their interviewees? I know the official deadline was only last Wednesday but I’m feeling discouraged since I haven’t heard yet...

Update: McMaster's new M.Sc. program in Psychotherapy has started sending out interview invites, if anyone on here applied!

I know this is a clinical thread, but... Does anyone have any insight on the interview process for McMaster's Psychotherapy program? Better yet, if there are any current students in the program, could you send me a PM? Thank you! ☺️
