  1. So excited to be accepted into a PhD program at Queen’s University!  It’s been my dream to obtain a PhD, and now I’m one step closer!

      Yay! Congrats!

  2. I am still alive! start my second-year teaching as an HS science teacher, definitely made the right decision not to pursue a postdoc training last year

      Hey! Glad to hear that!

  3. Job offer accepted, now it's time to defend my dissertation and GTFO :D

  4. Hey Guys!  I've done a bit of work on the server this afternoon.  Maybe the forums are a bit quicker?

  5. LaTeX users: how long did it take for you to learn?

Depends on what you mean by learn.. Everyone I know started by inheriting someone's document and using their preamble and settings. With time, you learn to do more sophisticated things and change settings to suit your preferences. Simple text-editing was intuitive pretty early for me, but some complicated stuff I still have to google every time I need it.

  6. If you had to eat a raw frog today, would you do it in the morning or keep putting it off?

When I was younger I would have said "first thing in the morning" but then other people would find a way to get an extension or get out of it and that would piss me off. Now I say, put it off as much as you can.

  7. After a long medical road starting in September, I've finally been diagnosed with GERD. Follow up with them next week and a sleep study in August. Grad school hit my body like a truck O.o

I'm glad you finally have a diagnosis. It's so much better than not knowing. I hope this means you can begin treatment and find a way to help your body heal, or at least manage.

  8. Passed my level one comp exam, aced my term and my paper. Sweet!

  9. Did a year of grad school then left to get a job in an unrelated field. Loved my time in grad school but decided that I probably wouldn't get a PhD and decided that a master's would not be very valuable, and therefore I got a job. I'll probably still check this site from time to time if I remember, though. Definitely want to stay in touch with what's going on in grad school land.

Good luck in your new chosen path and do come back to visit sometimes!

  10. Just found out someone listed 7 papers in their "publication" section of CV and none of the papers were actually published nor accepted....wow...desperate much?

Legal? Why not? It doesn't sound like the person lied, just that they have a sad CV and are trying to "beef it up." It will be clear to everyone that it's just that -- bullshit. But bullshit is not illegal...

Though it does allow me to have a pre-publication version of the paper on my website and on public archives, as long as I uploaded the paper before it was accepted for publication with this journal... but I do have another paper that I can't have on my website so I just say to contact me for more details.

Here is one I recently had to sign : "The copyright assignment includes without limitation the exclusive, assignable and sublicensable right, unlimited in time and territory, to reproduce, publish, distribute, transmit, make available and store the article, including abstracts thereof, in all forms and media of expression now known or developed in the future."

Well yes. When you publish a paper with certain publishers, including very well-regarded ones, some may have a pretty draconian rights clause. It's your choice to sign away your rights, but I don't know too many people who can afford to pass up top journals or choose to withdraw an accepted paper because of the wording of the rights clause

And the "lots of submitted work" sounds like someone on the job market who is unlikely to get a job... those people exist.

the "accepted" thing could happen because some journals can take forever to actually get things in print and also have publishing clause rights that don't allow the author to make a copy of the paper available on his/her website.

  16. Successfully defended my thesis this past Monday with no edits required by my committee. Now I just need the graduate school's approval.

  17. It's been a year since I joined gradcafe. Being an international student, I can honestly say this has been the single most useful resource for me in my journey as a graduate student. Thank you gradcafe, and thank you gradcafe-ers. :)

You do your best to explain, you keep in mind that they don't really understand the process, and that they mean well; but at the end of the day it's your life and your choices and if they can't respect that, it's their problem, not yours.

  19. Got off the waitlist for a prestigious award at U of T! I'm so excited to be starting next fall!

  20. Why is everyone in grad school either married or in relationships? Why do I have the displeasure of having to constantly meet them? Where are the fun people?!

    1. fuzzylogician

      fuzzylogician

I don't even know why I bother, but: there are fun married people, and boring single people, and any other combination you can think of, in grad school.
