Guys, I just got an email from UVA. I'm on the waitlist (Fiction)!

Congratulations! Just got a poetry waitlist notification from them as well.

Was yours pretty generic? I didn't get any info about numbers, possibilities, etc, unlike my Hopkins waitlist note.

Also got my Iowa rejection in the mail today, so that's all for me: 1a (VCU), 2w (UVA, Hopkins), 3r (Syracuse, Cornell, IWW). My first round of applications and, while of course I would've loved to get in everywhere, overall I'm delighted with how this turned out!

I'm sweating, hearing about the Brown acceptance and the VCU waitlist all in one day. If anyone knows anything about whether or not I should still hope for VCU, PLEASE LET ME KNOW THANK YOU

I heard from VCU on Monday. Not sure if they’re done notifying or not. I have a call with them coming up so I can ask!

I am zooming with them on Thursday - also happy to ask, if you haven't by then!

    So...

Word on the street was Iowa was supposed to make their calls “within the week” last week, and I’m seeing only one poetry acceptance out of 25.

Do we think Iowa will be calling accepted poets today?

My guess is yes. But I have literally no information to base that guess on, other than what you've said here and my own wishful thinking. Fingers crossed for all of us!

Hi! Congratulations! I also just got an offer w/ GTA for cnf at VCU. I'm still considering options/waitlists but I'm so thrilled to hear from them!! An exciting day! Glad you got some good news after a difficult few weeks.

Thank you, and congratulations to you too!

Congratulations!! I also applied to VCU (fiction) so here's hoping we may see each other on campus someday if it works out for me too :P

Look at all the rockstars in this forum!! Such talent all around

Thanks! And yes, good luck to you - would be great to cross paths there.

  6. Well, after feeling demoralized by my rejections from Cornell and Syracuse, and by radio silence from Iowa, I got a very nice email acceptance, including a graduate teaching assistantship, for poetry at VCU. I'm thrilled. Their funding's not as good as the other places I applied, but their faculty and journal and location made it one of my top choices. I'm wishing you all tremendous luck as the rest of this cycle plays out.

Hey has anyones UVA application status changed? Mine still says "Submitted" and some other people say that theirs says they're under review or something. I've only heard heresay about this so it may not be true, but I didn't know if it was like UMD's "Under Graduate Review" situation where it basically means I've already been nixed. Any info is welcome!

Mine also just says submitted. Where are you seeing this about the other ones? As a general rule I think that this kind of thing is pretty meaningless, but I totally get the impulse to get at whatever information I can find.

update from draft re: iowa poetry (somebody called them and asked. everybody say thank you.)

"all acceptances will be made within the week."

Thanks for sharing this! Just to clarify (i.e.to help my wild anxiety grow): this means they'll be done sending acceptances a week from today?

I've been keeping track of the Iowa notifications and I hate myself for having gotten to this point, but, so far, it's:

    - 2 acceptances in Draft

    - 1 on GradCafe (from one person referenced above from Draft)

    - 2 on Twitter

    - 2 that I'm not sure about because the info didn't come directly from the applicants: one comes from someone who said that their friend received an email from Iowa and another was someone on Twitter congratulating their friend who got in.

    That's all I've seen.

Were the twitter ones fiction as well?

Just got mine as well... Did yours say anything about the "abilities and opinions" of instructors and their feelings on "serving the development of your writing"? Kind of an odd form letter... Mine had a p.s. about reapplication, which I think was standard...

Sounds like we got the same exact email. A more personal note would, of course, have been better, though I don't fault them for it given the 10 million applicants they have to respond to. But I also thought that the wording of this was a little strange.

Do we think Syracuse is going to notify today? It’s the only school I’ve ever applied to in the past, and they always notified in February. Once on the 15th, once on the 20th.

I have seen others saying that Syracuse is significantly delayed this year, but don't have a source for this beyond internet hearsay. Would be curious to know if anyone has more substantial info to back that up.

  12. Hi everyone, I've been lurking here for a while but decided to make an account and introduce myself. I applied to six programs in poetry: Syracuse, Cornell, Hopkins, Iowa, UVA, VCU. Wishing all of you tremendous luck and success and resiliency!

And seriously, what moved me to make this account was to say some version of:

Look, I've worked in higher ed admin before, my advice to everyone: Stop. Overanalyzing. Your portals.

And also: if someone got a random marketing email from a school that you didn't get, it does not mean that they made it past some inscrutable micro-round in the application cycle and you didn't. I've seen this worry expressed a couple times on Draft.

    Chilllll.

Take a deep breath! I say this with nothing but compassion, because I am an anxious overthinker, and I get it, but I've also worked in higher ed admin and none of these things - the marketing email, the particular wording of the portal status - mean anything. I too am desperate for any info right now. But the only things that actually mean something are personal responses from the school.

We're in the midst of historic snow here in the south. Thankfully the historic cold is abating some. Hope you all are staying warm and finding healthy ways to stay busy through the waiting!
