  1. I have no idea about your field, but in my field (CS) Berkeley would probably be considered a stronger department than Harvard. You can check the rankings or ask your peers for a better picture, I suppose. Again, in my field, a PhD at UCB would probably be one of the top choices anywhere.
  2. Hey supmello, Congratulations on your acceptances! Times New Higher places UIUC at 36th globally and UCSD at 41st, so you could say they're pretty close in that sense. In my field, both are considered pretty good places, but I am more familiar with work done at UCSD. I am not familiar with AI/Systems, but you could take a look at the faculty in each school and see if their research or classes are exciting to you. I know people who studied at UCSD and they loved the city and atmosphere. I also know people who studied at UIUC, and while it may not be as exciting it doesn't have to be all bad, especially since you'll only be there for a shorter period as a MS student. All things being equal there's nothing wrong with picking a university based on good living conditions, especially if the programs are pretty even.
  3. Hi Fool4nine. By Body Art I meant things like tatoos and piercings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_art). She has performed mostly with watercolor painting. Having a scientific publication in Art's History is quite relevant to studying Fine Arts, I guess. I suppose "scientific" is relative. I'm talking about the usually 2 year long postgraduate programs aimed at people who have a Bachelor's degree and extend their formation. So it would most likely be this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Arts_%28postgraduate%29 or perhaps even this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Fine_Arts
  4. No one has any comments at all?
  5. Hello everyone! I know someone who is very interested in doing a Master's course abroad. She is a student from a medium sized university in Brazil interested in Body Art and Art's History. This person is a good student (let's say top 10% of her department). She has performed two or three times, some of these in large national events. I'm pretty sure she would get great recommendations from her undergrad professors, stating that she is a very interested and engaged student. She might also have at least one scientific publication by the time she graduates in the middle of 2012 and is reasonably fluent in English (I'm gonna guess about 80-90 on TOEFL). I'm trying to help her gauge her possibilities related to a Master's course, so I'm looking for suggestions of good schools for her to try, considering her level (i.e., good international schools where she would have a reasonable chance to pass). She would also be relying on funding to go through with this idea, although some funding from Brazil is possible, which makes me think more about schools in Europe (as they don't seem to charge much for tuition and the Brazilian scholarships would probably be just for living expenses). Any help is very appreciated. Thanks!
  6. This post is pretty old, but I am also moving to Zurich and I have the same kind of questions. I'm especially worried about the housing situation, since most places seem to require one to visit in advance before renting, which is impossible for me.
  7. It's almost like those IQ exams - Pick out the one that does NOT belong in this group: 1) Glove 2) Hat 3) Stove 4) Pants I almost read Stanford instead of Waterloo in that sentence...
  8. A bit off-topic here, but which resource would you guys use to check the ranking of a non-US program?
  9. Isn't the ETHZ professor based, that is, the professor personally decides who he wants to hire and proceeds?
  10. I meant it looked like it was copy-pasted from somewhere else not very carefully. My name at the beginning and the core of the letter had different fonts, stuff like that, very generic.
  11. Well, I e-mailed my POI because I wanted them to know I had 3 research submissions in the time from December to now and I thought this might make a difference. I recieved what seemed like an automatic rejection letter, so that's it for me and Harvard. Good luck.
