This is true in my opinion because U of A has an in-house clinic, and even a cadaver lab for anatomy, which isn’t the case for UBC. Also you can check out what the course sequence is for both UBC and U of A, to compare! There’s 8 courses in the first UBC semester, and 9 in the second one. While U of A has 6 in each, but two over the summer along with the placement.

UBC is half the cost of U of A’s program, but you might like to account for cost of living which is higher in Vancouver.

I don't know if the rumors that UdeM wants to send out offers today are true, but I'm dying over here! More so because even though in Montreal it's 1pm, in my timezone it's already 7pm... I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight. Look at me staying up late because "it's still 7pm in Montreal, maybe they'll send it out in 5min, just before the long weekend!" ?

    Hi,

For anyone curious, I emailed uOttawa and they told me that they cannot tell me HOW many people are on the waitlist. She only told me that 100 people applied to uOttawa this year for the SLP program. Hope this helps  Best.

    Congrats to everyone receiving acceptances!!
I only applied to Western, and I did not get in. Which is okay, I was expecting it. It feels like crap though, no matter how much you prepare or how little hope you let yourself have. I'm here for anyone who needs to vent. The rigamarole they put you through just to get an expensive education is unreal, you could end up investing so much of your time and money and then might have to potentially just move on to something less competitive... sooo scary. anxiety inducing. and and like, WHY aren't there more schools offering this program when so many people clearly want to take it and SLPs are in such high demand? What the heck is with that Canada.
Anyways, I will be heading to Lambton in the fall for a year long CDA program. This will give me a lot of hands on experience and more grades to improve my sGAP with as well (it is currently a 3.3, like I said, little hope lol) so hopefully next application season will go better ?
This leads me to a question I have: does anyone know how they pick and choose which post-secondary courses count/don't count towards sgpa, mainly Dal? I've read a lot of confusing info, like if you continued your education after your undergrad, they'll take 10 courses from your undergrad and 10 from your post-grad studies or something? I took a post-bach course at wayne state and they used all of my grades from that for my western sGPA... But I worry my CDA grades might not apply? Or just not at dal. Anywho, hoping someone can help clear that up for me. I am planning to actually save up and apply to western, dal, maybe even alberta idk. dal says they don't use certain grades, but also says they might if they're related to the field, which mine would be... ?‍♀️
PS I was watching the Hannibal show earlier this week and there was an episode where a character is ..maimed... and no longer has lips and they had the nerve to make his labiodental sounds completely normal, some bilabial too. Anyone else pick up on this stuff now? We clearly need more speech experts in the entertainment industry ?

Hi all, thought I’d let you know that I was rejected from Western. Unfortunately this means I was rejected from both schools I applied to. I’m not in too much shock considering it was a slim chance due to my low sGPA. If anyone who was accepted to Western or UofT this year can private message me their stats, that will be sooo helpful and appreciated so I can improve my application for next year!
I will be continuing my job as a direct support professional for a year, and I’ll also be looking for research opportunities with profs (although idk how likely this is considering I’m graduating this summer). I believe my sGPA will be A LOT higher in the next application cycle when I finish this semester, so I’m not sure if I’ll be taking extra courses (except another physiology credit so I can try for uoft next time as well). This is definitely not the outcome I was hoping for, and I’m not gonna lie my spirit was very broken last night, but today I stand stronger and more hopeful for the future. I hope I see some of you in the next application cycle! Please don’t lose hope (although I know it’s easier said than done) & continue working hard for what you want and what is good for your mental health! I am still extremely proud of all of us for getting through this. Congratulations to all of you that have been accepted/waitlisted so far or will be in the near future - it is well-deserved and I wish you the best on your exciting new journey! To the rest of us, I send you nothing but happiness and joy. Enjoy your long weekend everyone, and see you next year! ❤️

Congratulations on your offers everybody! I look forward to meeting some of you at Western next year! I just wanted to post again for people who haven't seen. I'm currently a first-year student at Western and I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the program or living in London. If you've been waitlisted and are feeling discouraged, please don't give up hope. I was accepted off the waitlist myself!
I also just wanted to repost the link to the 'Rejecting Offers' thread:
If you are rejecting a waitlist position or acceptance, feel free to post here to help others get an idea of how the waitlist might be moving. We found this super helpful last year!
    Again, congratulations everybody!

Hey everyone congrats on acceptances! Either way, if you got the news you wanted or not, be proud that you were able to go through this application process during a pandemic. That's hard!
I got waitlisted at both Western and Mac, but am #3 on Mac's waitlist so I am hopeful. If anyone is declining their offer to Mac please let me know!

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances! I am waitlisted at Western and thought I’d share my stats incase it’s helpful for anyone else
I have a 3.47 sgpa according to opras. 93 hours volunteering in research at CHEO, 63 hours volunteering at a private speech clinic, and 1300+ hours as the administrative assistant at a private speech clinic (my current job). My professional reference is my boss who is the owner of the speech clinic and an SLP so I’m sure that looked good. This is my second time applying!

I’m trying to stay hopeful! & again, congratulations to everyone on their acceptances and waitlist offers!

    Thanks ❤
I thought I highlighted EDI and honestly, I thought my letter of intent was solid ?‍♀️
If anyone is willing to look at my resume and letter of intent to offer some feedback, I'd sure appreciate that!
The only thing that MAY have been my downfall was the CASPER as I'm not a fast typer. Since they don't ever give you a score, it's difficult to speculate how I did. I will be contacting Vicki in the upcoming weeks to ask for some direct feedback. Unfortunately for me the U of A is my ride or die, unless my husband finds work elsewhere.
We might consider UBC for next app cycle...
If anyone has any great connections to offer in order to diversify my resume/volunteer opportunities in the Edmonton area (pending COVID getting under control), I'm all ears!
Best wishes to all of you still waiting! ❤

I'm really sorry to hear this, and I'm also quite surprised myself, not only because of your stats and experience being so great but also because you know some of the faculty personally then I would have imagined they might have been able to put a good word in for you or something. As the others mentioned, please don't give up! Obviously we don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but given how great your numerical stats are, perhaps it was one of the more qualitative aspects of the application, like your letter of intent or the reference letters? If you do apply again next year, the GRE requirement has been waived so hopefully that will allow you to focus on writing an outstanding letter of intent and doing well on CASPer
One other thing I noticed (I hope you don't mind that I went back to re-look at your stats) would be that you wrote the CASPer test on the last available day, January 26th. The deadline for UA was February 1st, and the CASPer website says that it can take 2-3 weeks for schools to receive the scores, so do you know for sure that they received them in time? I'm not sure if you were checking the status of your application/the checklist frequently on the GSMS portal, but maybe for a bit of time it was partially incomplete, and that was a factor? I'm not sure, but I just thought I might point this out.
Finally, I'm not sure if UofA does this, but I know sometimes if you email departments to ask what you can improve on for the next cycle sometimes they'll give a hint about it (but not every school does this). I've seen on past forums some schools have told applicants they should try and improve their letters of intent to make them more interesting, boost prereq grades, had a low CASPer score, etc.
I hope some of this helps! I'm sorry once again that you were rejected and I'm sure it was probably surprising for you, but I hope you hang in there and don't give up!

Ahhh! I can't believe that we will hear from at least Western tonight! (Does anyone know if Toronto, McMaster or Ottawa also update their portals/ORPAS at midnight or if they wait to contact us during business hours on April 1st?) I'm so nervous! I don't know how I will focus on my classes today... Good luck everyone!

Wow I am so sorry to hear that and I am seriously so surprised by that. ? You really have amazing stats and background experience, more than some people I know in the program currently (myself included). It really must've been a competitive year. I wonder if they place a lot of importance in the letter of intent as that is how people can be memorable/make an impact & stand out from other applicants. I would encourage you to apply again next year, I really think you have what it takes and I wouldn't give up! I know it might be difficult but please don't be discouraged by this. Next year could be your year!
