  1. I don't have real information about this, but I know that last year, they only had funded slots for one or two people. Perhaps things improved this year?
  2. If there was something really different about my application, I guess it was an additional letter writer. This very enthusiastic and energetic letter writer basically got the rest of my letter writers together, and strategized about who writes what. So that was the only thing that was different about my application. But parts of the application that were within my control remained the same.
  3. I do actually appreciate schools which try to put rejected students out of their misery promptly - it's just a sign of respect to those who paid the same application fee, even if they didn't make it. At least Yale was swift with the execution of my dreams.
  4. I personally wouldn't suggest this approach, though (despite the fact that this was the approach I took). I was simply too burnt out by the previous season (and life in general) to do anything about it. But I made the point to suggest that part of the process is random, and applying to more schools is a great approach. There are random factors at play, e.g. people applying for the some fields as you, department politics. These are things that none of us applicants can control. The best we can do is to minimize the random factor.
  5. I applied to Toronto for Asian history. Admitted with funding about two weeks ago. Best of luck!
  6. Because rejected students are unimportant (to them)?
  7. Uh oh. E-mail? Happened to me for Temple. No reply, whatsoever. Sigh!
  8. Go to Apply Yourself --> Check Application To the left, you should see a link for downloadable forms. The very first form is called something like "Application Status". Download that. It should have all your information.
  9. Do you mind sharing if it was a mass e-mail? Or was it a vaguely personalized one? And, congratulations!
  10. I am so glad you posted, because I also went to check my Apply Yourself site. I guess it's the same "yes" we're both thinking about, although we're hoping it's the other "yes"
  11. I was just notified of my wait list in Cornell. If Cornell admits are not interested in attending, please be kind and turn down your offer as soon as you are done deciding? I am in Asian history. Thanks!
  12. Haven't heard a peep, and e-mails to the department have gone unanswered.
  13. Part of this whole process is also simply crapshoot. I ended up in this situation last year, whereby I only had unfunded offers. Like you, there was little I can do to improve my application. In fact, this year, I reapplied to places with exactly the same application - and ended up with much better results. 'Tis a random process. Anyway, you are still waiting for four more, so keeping my fingers crossed for you!
  14. Congratulations on making it to the waitlist, even if it feels like purgatory! I think for questions 1-3, only UNCCH can answer your question, or someone else who's been on the UNCCH wait list. I've read elsewhere that it might help your chances a little, if you told them that they are your top choice, and if you are accepted, you'll definitely go. Once you are in, however, nobody is going to care about whether you were on the waitlist.
  15. Hmm, there's no harm in just establishing contact? I just e-mailed the potential advisors, and thanked them for reviewing and supporting my application.
  16. I live in the GMT+8 time zone, and because of that, I actually added world clocks on my igoogle for all the schools I applied to last year. In other words, you're not the only one!
  17. Whenever I wasn't checking it, actually. (and that is despite the fact that I check it obsessively)
  18. The situation evidently improved for you this year. And that's all that matters. It sure beats my situation - everyone else put up their acceptance letters last year, while I was putting up my rejection letters.
  19. Hopefully with a failing grade on the high school diploma!
  20. But for the time being, this is what I have on my office door: http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=1082
  21. I have this dream that I will keep all these rejection letters, and one day, if I ever get tenure, I'll frame all these up and paste it on my office door.
  22. I got that from Cornell last year, too. While it sucks right now, looking back, it was quite funny. It was almost like they were saying, "just in case you didn't get our first message ..." But, sorry to hear about the rejection!
  23. Congrats to the Cornell admit: Are they done with acceptances? What is your field if you don't mind sharing?
  24. Uh oh. Thanks, though!
  25. Are your transcripts listed as missing on the apply yourself site for Temple? I just noticed it not too long ago, but am pretty sure that my transcripts arrived in Temple's Department of History, though.
