  1. I am guessing people end up elsewhere? I doubt universities retract their offers, once it has been given, formal or informal. The only possible way they can retract an offer is if the department submits your recommendation for admission, but the graduate school rejects it. But even that is really uncommon, apparently. So did you get into Harvard? If yes, congratulations! Do you mind sharing what field you are in, and who contacted you?
  2. Hey Riss, I do hope that they somehow got your application. Best of luck!
  3. What?!?!?! I'd actually kick up a fuss. You paid money, you deserve a service. Update us on how it goes.
  4. I know that it is painful, and it does feel as if everything we have done so far has come to naught. But honestly, this process is random. It doesn't always reward your hard work. There are still other decisions to come. Take it easy.
  5. Hmm, one of my seniors had to pay for at least his first year in Chicago. Fortunately for him, he was able to cough out the dough. This was a couple of years ago.
  6. Same question that I have.
  7. Hey stanford 315, thanks for the reply. Hope you have better luck with the rest of your applications! As for those who haven't heard anything from other schools, maybe we can hope we are waitlisted?
  8. To those who posted UC Berkeley rejections, if you are reading the forum, just a question: Did you actually e-mail for a decision, or was the e-mail sent out by the department/DGS/whatever? Thanks in advance, and best wishes for the rest of your applications!
  9. That's great! Congrats!
  10. Congrats to all Berkeley admits! I applied there too, but haven't heard a thing (yes, I just checked my spam box). Time to sob. :|
  11. Condolences to the Yale rejects. It's quite a bit of bad luck this year-- heard that they cut their intake this year by quite a significant percentage.
  12. Some of the schools I applied to seem to be running late this year. Usually, news of first acceptance go out by around 6th/7th Feb, but so far, there's been no news on grad cafe. The last couple of days, my heart skips a beat every time I get a new e-mail notification.
  13. I guess they call you up, if there is something about your application that intrigues them, but has not been addressed sufficiently in the application. I guess this can range from stuff like language proficiency, change of majors, etc. It probably is a good thing. If they call, it probably means that your application got pretty far.
  14. I have no idea, but I am hoping not (I'm international, too). From what I understand, the reason why UC schools limit international admissions is because international students can't establish residency in California, making funding them more expensive than domestic students. As long as there isn't such a rule in other states, I don't think there's an international student costs more than an out-of-state student. BUT, I am also guessing that there's some policy governing how many international students vs. how many domestic students. In my friend's cohort, it was half-half.
  15. Hmm, my source from another department in Cornell says that basically, departments in Cornell have been told to cut their budgets across the board. One of the things that have been affected rather badly is the graduate program. Hence, some departments are holding back admission decisions, until they get more news about the economic situation.
  16. I think someone who applied to NYU for Asian Studies (MA) posted an admit on the results section. Not quite sure if it is trustworthy, though.
  17. I think there were some places that sent out rejections first. Duke English, maybe?
  18. Hang in there. Maybe acceptances are slowly trickling out.
  19. Ah, the way I figure, most of us apply to X number of programs. Some applicants get the nod across the board, but fortunately, they can only be at one place at one time, so that's when the waitlist comes into the picture. I think the statistics I obtained from the schools do not include those on the waitlists. Probably their first round offers. (or so I hope) *gulp*
  20. Congrats! Now you can make good use of the weekend by throwing a celebration party!
  21. I figured that most of the programs I applied to have a 5-10% acceptance rate. Closer to 5 than 10. The highest acceptance rate of the programs I applied to is like 12%. Incredible.
  22. Congrats! That's great!
  23. Haha, I am a little worse. I keep checking the document status page, even though I know it is not being updated, or it has been updated rather vaguely.
  24. Nope. But none of the schools I applied to are notifying yet.
