  1. I put 0, but since then, the number has gone to 1.
  2. Maybe they are just busy? I e-mailed my last school a few days ago. And they didn't reply until today. The letter, which took three weeks to get to me, arrived a day after I sent out the e-mail. And it wasn't bad news. Talk about timing.
  3. Haha, I'll buy it! At least we'll get to read about which academics are supposed to be "disappointed" that their papers didn't get accepted.
  4. *ouch* But it's distracting you, isn't it?
  5. Demand a refund!!!!
  6. Haha, the pains of a name that is similar! There is a postdoc in my current department, who shares exactly the same name as another famous and established historian in the same field as him. Consequently, he keeps having to reply to e-mails, clarifying that he is not that so-and-so.
  7. This has been bugging me as well. I guess I told myself that I really just want to do the PhD, just for pure interest sake. And when I return to my home country, I'll be "okay" with teaching in high schools with a doctorate. On a happier note, my field is pretty small, so competition is not *that* insane, relative to a field like American history. In a recent (maybe a couple of months) study done by the AHA, the supply in my field did not exceed the demand by too much. So hopefully things will work out, and I get to work in a university. Erm, if I even got funding for the school that I was admitted to.
  8. *ouch* Really sorry to hear that.
  9. I forgot-- there are the weekends, too, if your schools are hardworking! That gives you a 4/7 chance for acceptances.
  10. Leaves you Wednesdays and Thursdays for acceptances!
  11. The part about the potential advisers is really quite telling in retrospect. I applied to 5 schools and contacted 6 professors. I got polite interest from 4 of them, no reply from one of them, and an enthusiastic reply from one. I was admitted to the university with the enthusiastic professor.
  12. Yup. At least one ivy I know reduced their intake for a certain department by half. On a happier note, if any of you are on the waitlist, my friend is rejecting the spot.
  13. One of the profs basically told me that I probably didn't do that well this admissions cycle because of the way I pitched myself. So this time round, he's going to work on my SOP with me. Okay, my applications last admissions cycle were pretty last minute-- as with everything else in my life.
  14. Oops, I forgot about the SOP and the writing sample/s. I got to work on those as well.
  15. These sound like waitlists to me.
  16. First-time applicant like you. I'm not lacking in research experience and language training. There's nothing I can do about my GPA. But the one thing I'd do differently next year is to make meaningful contact with potential advisors. This time, I did establish contact, but it was along the lines of, "hey! Are you taking in students?" But the next time, I think I will actually get them sold on what I intend to do.
  17. Thanks! I'll distribute all my good karma to you guys still waiting!
  18. A miracle happened to me. Sort of. I thought I was totally out at my last school, since my friend heard via e-mail, whereas I didn't. I am, however, IN at my last school! Problem now: No funding, yet. *gulp* Hope the rest of you have miracles, too!
  19. On the same boat. No news on funding after getting an admit from my top choice. But surprisingly glad to be able to post on this thread, since I was rejected by all the other schools I applied to.
  20. So, the joke is on me for starting this forum. I got my final reply, on the day before Friday the 13th. I thought the waiting game will finally end, but I guess not-- I was accepted into my last school, but funding is to be decided. (not too hopeful) Here's some positive energy to the rest of you waiting!
  21. Gee, I am really sorry to hear that. Here's mine: Then I was a free human Now I am just a slave to my computer/e-mail and all those schools which are twiddling their thumbs while I wither away in my chains.
  22. Someone I know was accepted a week or so ago. I don't know any details, though.
  23. This must be a horrendous year for applications. Why else are there TWO friday the thirteenths during the season for admission decisions? Anyway, did anyone receive tasteless rejections on Friday the thirteenth? My first rejection came on Friday the thirteenth last month. Knowing the sick sense of humor that seems to govern my world, I am predicting that my last rejection will come on Friday the thirteenth, this month.
  24. I cracked today, and e-mailed the last school. I just want my life back.
