  1. I was feeling negative, but then I decided that no matter what happens, Obama is now my president.
  2. mo money mo problems
  3. Thanks for doing the verbal poll. The quant one was making me feel so inadequate!
  4. lol I put the last 3 years' acceptances and rejections from my programs in iCal. They each seem to have their own distinct weeks. 1 comes at the end of this month, then the other 4 have their own weeks in February. Data is fun
  5. I spent this morning reading through every single post in the "History Admissions 2008" thread.... So glad I'm going back to school tomorrow.
  6. January 19, 2008 was indeed a Saturday, according to my iCal. It was posted a few days after that. And I'm guessing that tomorrow would be the equivalent Saturday, but who knows? Maybe I'll hear tomorrow, maybe I'll hear on the 19th itself, maybe it will be next week.... maybe I won't hear until much later because I've been rejected. We'll see.
  7. Well... I'm a little on edge this weekend because last year around this time, one of my schools emailed a results poster with an acceptance on a Saturday. Sooooo, we'll see.
  8. Sounds wonderful! Wish I could have done something like that.
  9. We're all a bit stressed at this point in the application process, so let's make a space here for positivity. Chicken soup for the graduate applicant's soul, if you will. Share your inspirational stories with us. What about this process made you smile? No sulking here, please.
  10. lol I think I'll self-identify as hopelessly neurotic. I agree with IvyHope though - we all need to take a deep breath. In fact, I just spent a few minutes on YouTube looking for intro to meditation videos that I could post on the Waiting board. Then I realized that would be contributing to the problem. Oh dear.
  11. Or it would show your interest in the program
  12. I'm still waiting on a 12/15 deadline app. to "receive" my transcript and 1 paper LOR. Apparently I was supposed to mail these things directly to the department and not the main graduate admissions office. Sooo they're in interdepartmental mail limbo somewhere. I finally asked the LOR writer to send a new copy directly to the department.
  13. I don't know how I feel personally about reading letters of rec., but my girlfriend is 100% in support of reading them before they're sent. She thinks that an applicant should be completely aware of how he/she is represented. She even got more LORs than necessary so she could pick and choose which ones to send with which applications. Granted, she was applying to things like TFA and fellowships not directly related to school, but she has said that the same philosophy applies for her grad apps. She also finds comfort in reading things like "X was the best student of [her subject] I've ever taught at [big deal UK institution]," saying that it reduces stress when she's more comfortable/sure of the complete application package. It may be true because in some ways she's less anxious than me... but I'm still on the fence.
  14. I figured "you know you're a grad student when..." would make a good google search. Here's the first link: http://www.chat.carleton.ca/~jnoakes/grad.html
  15. lol that made me feel a little bit better too. Someone should start an inspirational thread. Chicken soup for the graduate applicant's soul, anyone? I'd do it, but I don't have any warm fuzzies to impart.
  16. Yeah, I didn't like Embark all that much. While trying to submit my 1 Embark app, it look a good 10 minutes trying to go back and figure out which totally not-required questions I hadn't yet filled in.
  17. I sympathize. I had a dream just before I woke up this morning - so realistic - where I went online and had an email waiting from one of my schools. It felt so real. It seemed plausible too. Wasn't from Top Choice U, but a school from which I might very well get an email like that in the near future. It was like hey, we were really impressed with your application, particularly your writing sample, and we'd like to offer you a place. Funding information to follow. When I woke up, I rushed to check my mail. Sadly, my dream was not a demonstration of any sort of psychic ability. Now I'm all worked up for the day. I can't quite shake that dream or the anxiety that went with it. I hope it works out for you.
  18. Yeah... When I told my family, they were like "oh! You're so smart! You'll get into Yale and Harvard and Penn and all those places! Cause that's where smart people go, right?" Ahhh, love them. Very sweet and flattering, but not exactly how it works. If I could do it over, I'd probably keep it to myself as much as possible.
  19. Somehow I don't think I'd be convincing if I were to lie. Because really, who turns down Yale?
  20. I'm feeling a bit petrificus totalus'ed myself. Damn waiting.
  21. Oh wow. How nerve-wracking! Fingers crossed for you.
  22. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!@!2121!!!!!!!
  23. What a great vacation from the waiting. I'm excited for the new semester to start on Monday so the work can distract me. This last week of absolutely nothing to do but wait and think about waiting is a drag.
  24. This whole process has left me with very little confidence and only $17.20 in the bank. Please accept and fund me, dream school? *puppy-dog eyes*
