  1. next two weeks are big... should be getting admits for JHU and Duke Good luck everyone!
  2. Looks like we had some Duke admits..... I wonder if decisions are communicated in batches or staggered, given that it is so PI dependent. I think my line in the sand for most schools will be March 10th. If it is not happening by then i am assuming rejection letter pending.
  3. A Duke student told me that they did not get an interview until March. I think a bulk of their incoming class comes from the Jan and Feb events, but it is not over until you get that rejection notice.
  4. I applied through NCSU, my application is unchanged though. I just heard through current students that this is the week.
  5. UNC/NCSU, second batch of admits are coming out this week! They running a small class this year.
  6. Yeah, I could spam how I manage my anxiety on a day to day basis, but that is both embarrassing and unproductive. I think the 2nd half of this month will have a flurry of activity. Some programs have not started or completed interviews yet, I have another one next week. PI's could still be dragging feet or waiting for other interview groups to complete. Or maybe they send admits in bulk at the department level. I have my fingers crossed for the people on this thread we are going to be colleagues, coworkers or perhaps collaborators in the future ( at least my tissue engineering peeps, i dunno about you optics/neuro nerds).
  7. I think they may have another bulk round of invites going out. There were 30 or so at the first interview session and I was told typically they have about 30 more come to the second interview day in late February.
  8. Hi, I had a question regarding what matters more in terms of getting a job, school ranking or the skills developed during the Phd. I ask because I am very much interested in tissue engineering but I am worried about getting an industry job afterwards. I know a T-10 program open doors, but if an opportunity at a T-30 school is a better fit in terms of interest what do you choose? How much does school cache matter in terms of getting the interview?
  9. Be thankful she was nice enough to respond to emails post interview! She set you down easy, but anything along the lines of "best of luck" is a kiss of death. On the bright side, if you made it to the interview stage at UM, you have a good shot at other programs depending on where you applied.
  10. I applied through NC State's website. I will sit on my hands I guess. Congrats to does how have been admitted already!
  11. hmmmm, nothing changed in the portal, that does not give me the warm and fuzzies. I was expecting this to be the lowest bar to entry, I stand corrected.
  12. Anyone get admits from UNC/NCSU? I saw an entry on the boards and I know they go out this week.
  13. I LOL'd hard at this, some of the people on this board.... smh
  14. I am not as old as you guys but I am sure I am 1 std over the mean test taker. I think the kicker will be the processes speed required to do well. I think you are on the right track with magoosh. It is really effective, I would listen to videos to and from work and get refreshed on material I long since forgotten. If you just do the custom practice for time every night you should be good. The best feature is to have them shoot back questions you got wrong. I would do few sets over the course of a week, watch the explanations then take another mock section with just the ones i got wrong. A few cycles of this will improve your confidence. The key is building that speed and eliminating the careless errors. Also don't worry about the score predictor, I out performed the two times I took the test.
  15. Pretty cryptic process... all my reconnaissance has only yielded that your chances are pretty good at this point. Just need to let the chips fall where they may. I take it I will see you Friday. Were you selected for tissue or cell mechanics?
  16. I am looking for specifics on the Duke interview going into Friday? Is it just for fit, interview duration, post interview percentages, turnaround time on decisions, etc.... ? Also is the fact that one attending the 1st of the 3 interview days have any significance on percentages.? Thanks in advance.
  17. Got it to hand it to the JHU folks they show up to the boards every year it seems to help people out. It would be nice if some of the other 1st year admits from last year circled back for some Q&A. I am looking for Duke individuals specifically.... Expresso or some other JHU rep: How do you identify which PI is open to taking students? On the interview webpage, a lot of professors have availability some don't, is that the determining factor. I would like to focus on people with open slots. Also how long are interviews. Thanks in advance.
  18. What is the typical wait time for decisions for programs where you are admitted to the PI rather than the department? I know schools have multiple visitation days is going to the first scheduled one considered a good sign? I been staring at the results a bit and it seems some people get an answer a few days after the interview. Is it fair to ask for a timeline during the interview?
  19. Can individuals of past seasons or those in the know post ballpark post interview acceptance rates by school and discipline?
  20. Undergrad Institution: No name state school Masters Institution: Mid-tier State School Major(s): UG - Mechancial, Grad - Chemical Engineering Overall GPA: UG - 3.7/4.0 Grad - 3.6/4.0 Demographics/Background: US Citizen, but old ( bad side of my 30's). I am testing the theory it is never too late GRE Scores: Q: 163 (85%) V: 167 (98%) W: 4.0 (59%) LOR: 1 strong but from a non tenured faculty, 2 from full professors whom I worked for in a research capacity, but who do not know me as well Research Experience: 4yrs as engineer in industry as an ME, 1 yr in industry as ChemE in biotech, 1yr in academia as a research tech (current job). Publications/Abstracts/Presentations: None though I might be able to publish some recent stuff in my current job but none of that was captured in my applications Awards/Honors/Recognition: Dean's list, Tau beta pi but nothing really noteworthy Fellowships/Funding: Planning on applying to NSF next year Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Industry experience at large multi national corporations in finance, energy and biotech. Some exposure to gene therapy and micro-fludics with my most recent roles in academia as a tech. Other Miscellaneous Accomplishments: married Research Interests: Tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, gene therapy Institutions/Programs: Only three (UNC/NCSU, Duke, JHU), JHU is a what the hell but I more than likely cannot attend since I am geographically constrained to my current residence. Comments: I am a career changer and older so I am far from the traditional profile. I also want to return to industry after my degree. While i do not directly state that, I am not tenure track or bust in my SOP. My strengths are I am not 22, my SOP is very strong and I have a lot of lab and professional skills. Downside I am old, always young at heart though. I have a strong ties to the UNC/NCSU program.
  21. I think these next two weeks are key for interviews based on past history for Duke. I applied there as well and I am getting antsy... Do people get admitted without getting an interview?
  22. Hi All, I wanted to get people's opinion on degree collecting. I am a career changer with varied interests and I have an undergrad degree in business adminstration and an undergrad degree in mech engineering at this point. Now the job I have forces a MS engineering degree on you and must be aquired at a specific set of instittutions none of which I am thrilled about. I must go along with the program and earn a degree so I figured I would pick a different displine that is sort of connected to my end game but not fully. I picked an MS ChemE which I am currently working through. I want to pursue a MS in MechE after this degree I am concerend if this would help or hurt me down the road? Any advice. Thanks in advance kaob
  23. Thank you for the replies Yeah I actually have 2 undergrad degrees, one in finance and one in engineering.work experience in finance but not much in engineering, I just completed my career switch. The company I work for makes getting an MS mandatory as part of there on boarding so I figured why not shoot for the top. My finance degree was 3.7 from a tier 3 borderline tier 2 private school in NY and as I said before my engineering is a tier 3 public in NY with a 3.8. I figured they would have some scheme to ding me for the tier 3 aspect but given my odd profile I figured that would help my chances. I will make sure I hammer the GREs It seems like the deadline is coming up too quickly for me to get my stuff in order for next fall but I will make sure I am ready for the spring. I called them up and asked and they said most people start taking a couple classes as NDO then matriculate, I may do that if things do not work out on my first pass for admission. It seems like this company has some pull when it comes to admissions as they seem to have 100% acceptance with Ga Tech. ( I know not Stanford but still a tier 1 school. Do you think employer name pulls any weight? In any event you all have laid out a road map on what is required. Thank you all for the advice. KOAB One follow on question I had. As a career changer back and school with a need to pay bills, I was basically a pariah at my institution. I did the work and left usually heading back to work. As a result I have limited exposure to research or any real relationship with professor that would result in a very strong recommendation. I have much better work recommendations. Do you think this will be an issue or the fact that I am asking to do online courses and just take additional classes make this a moot point. I mean I am not asking to do research over there.
  24. Hi all Looking for opinions on how competitive slots for Stanford distances learning Masters in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford. My company is on the list participating firms so I was thinking of applying. How competitive do you feel this program is? I would assume that this is pure green to the institution it seems like a great way to get into a great school. I would be attending part time. In regards to stats I have years of working experience and my undergrad GPA is strong ~3.8 though I went to a tier 3 state school. I was thinking with a strong GRE score I should have a good chance but I am fishing for commments. More info on the program can be found here Stanford Honor's Cooperative program http://scpd.stanford.edu/certificates/mastersDegrees.jsp Thanks in advance KOAB
