1) Congrats to the recent Eastman admits and all of the other ones who might be lurkers and not posters!!
2) I was waitlisted on a weekend at 1AM once!
3) Harvard is going to call us ALL after 5pm, because phone calls often go out after business hours on purpose because we'll more likely to be home and available!
edited to add that I don't actually know what Harvard is going to do, I'm just making myself feel better.
purpledinosaur - they could easily be sending out emails slowly, perhaps first to people that are closer by and would say "yes" to a campus visit easily. I'm relatively close to NYC!
Karajan - yeah, my email was strictly out of the theory side of things, and I can pick almost whatever day I want---there seems to be be no particular "day" for all prospective applicants.
Today I met another Musicology applicant who had visited UCLA for interviews two weeks ago. I got the impression that they'd flown out all the top applicants already. Makes sense since their deadline was pretty early. :-/
But if you're Ethnomusicology, Comp, or doing a DMA, this might not apply to you!
I think it can only be a good thing! A lot of departments can't afford to reimburse visitors for interviews, so they go the Skype route by default. If they didn't care about you as much as other candidates, why would they bother? Of course, not all interviews mean you'll definitely be admitted, but you're certainly in the top group of candidates.
Yeah, but if you're like me (who put in the "Feb 10" Columbia interview notification) you think the default is "today" so you don't even change that part of the form (whoops).
I would find it hard to believe that anyone would prank a musicology result. That troll is stupid troll. At least prank a more popular subject area!
That being said, it isn't all that uncommon for acceptances to come out not all at once. But, I'm only giving Duke and Harvard 'til tomorrow before I really think I'm out of the game there. I've also heard that UCLA is already wining and dining their top Musicology applicants...as of two weeks ago. I can only hope for a waitlist there.
I think I'm gonna make a proper signature because even I'm starting to lose track of what's going on with myself. So much interview stress (that I'm insanely thankful for at the same time).
well, my brother applied there for undergrad and I for grad, and it has the same application system, and when he was accepted, that note did indeed appear on the application page.
congrats!
yay, bshelley! You going to the visit day in April?
no other updates on my end either. Other than a really nice skype interview with Pitt this morning.
I have a last-minute-scheduled Skype interview with the musicology faculty at Pitt on Monday that I'm currently fretting about. I am already scheduled to interview individually and in person later in February, so I have no idea what to expect on Monday. I hope I'm not a complete disappointment, as I don't know if I can get full refunds on the tickets and accommodations I have already reserved.
What I AM expecting is the connection to be spotty and the image to freeze at a very awkward facial expression while I have no choice but to continue talking.
Edited to ask that I'm assuming skype interviews are audio AND video, but are they actually, usually just audio? I guess they can't assume I have a webcam.
I know how you feel! I know that I should take the offer to stay with grad students to get a better feel for the place than I would if I went off to a hotel room, but I'm also the kind of person that needs to be alone and turn off at the end of the day to recharge for the next, just because I get exhausted from social interaction -- particularly the kind of small talk/niceties that you engage in when you're meeting new people. (I'm introverted but not TOO awkward...I hope...) I'm gonna just suck it up and get over it, but I totally know how you feel, haha.
I'm planning to send a short thank-you email to the faculty members I meet/speak with. Hopefully I'll remember to jot down everyone's names while I'm actually there! This is so customary for job interviews that I'm just gonna do it for graduate interviews as well. I'll probably send a thank you to admin people who helped me out, too.
As for answering a question like "What text would you use to teach _______" welp, I'm screwed!
yep, mine's in all caps too, hahaha. Last year they mailed rejection letters on Feb 8th, so their decisions are not too long from now!
congrats purpledinosaur!
Like purpledino said, is it possible they just want to know if you're definitely considering them, so they'll hold the offer for you until you are able to decide? I thought all grad schools were supposed to give admits until April 15 to decide.
