  2. I'm at NWU at interviews and someone today told me they heard from Yale a few days ago (accepted). Not sure if they're doing it all at once or staggering.
  3. This is probably what happened, because they explicitly told me they would take other offers into consideration. This also explains why you weren't at least wait-listed. Because of nerves, I have no idea what I said during my interviews, so who knows what tomorrow will bring...
  4. Theory isn't making decisions until tomorrow, anyway.
  5. GradCafe better get its ish together because how can I justify wasting time here when the site is down?

  6. WHAATTTT I don't even believe you.
  7. I kept the self view window open. It was small enough that it wasn't distracting, but I kept it open to just make sure I was always squarely in the frame. It helped me realize that my default "listening" face looks like MISERY on camera, so I tried to smile a whole lot more.
  8. bleh. Wasted another day in front of my email.
  9. If you're using a laptop, hooking it up with an ethernet cord directly to your router/modem will produce a more reliable connection than just going wireless. I don't think it matters too much where you take the call, as long as the background isn't distracting (people/tv/weird posters/whatever) and that your light source isn't blinding you or the camera. Do a test skype with a friend to make sure that your microphone is picking you up clearly, too!
  10. I'm 24, but this thread has really made me think about reconciling my "a baby before 30" and "a PhD before 30" goals, and on my visits adding in questions about family/child support and program flexibility down the line. Also maybe I'm thinking about this because it's Valentine's day, haha.

  12. I've never hated my area code so much!

  13. The only "real" rankings I know of are the NRC rankings. The NRC came out with their doctoral rankings in 2010 (based on years-old data by then, but anyway.....). The rankings are sort of confusing, so I'd say take a look yourself at: http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-Music/124746/. In general, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are all at the tippy top, Michigan a few notches lower, CUNY surprisingly low, but obviously these really have to be taken with a grain of salt because tied for #1 in S-rankings is Indiana's "Folklore" program. (?)
  14. Hi Josquin! We don't know what the heck is going on with Harvard and Yale. Well, there's that one Harvard admit from a few weeks ago on the results board, but apparently they just made their decisions last Friday. (I'm also applying for theory at H and Y.) Congrats to your success so far, though---in particular with Princeton, in the wake of the Feb 10th 2012 Princeton Massacre!
  15. This is the only place anyone would understand this sentiment!
  16. Sunday night! What shall this week bring? A slew of interview-requesting emails from Yale, I trust, and no small envelopes from Cornell. A few phone calls from Harvard should ring their way into everyone's ears, and Princeton will realize they forgot to accept anyone this year.
  17. Thanks for sharing! I'm down 1.5 interviews, 2.5 to go, so I'm still stalking these fora to help prepare myself. I'll share some of the general questions I've gotten so far: Where do you see yourself and your interests 5 years down the line? Slightly more generally - what future avenues do you want to take with your work? (EVERYONE asked me this.) What are you working on RIGHT NOW? What have you done since graduating? Questions about methodologies, which I need to prepare a less incoherent answer for. And a lot of really specific questions about my work. And not a lot of questions about why I see myself fitting into their program, although I'm still preparing to answer questions like that, that focus more on them than me. It's really all been about turning my SoP into a long, extended conversation. And YES!!! Be prepared to ASK QUESTIONS! Don't be afraid to ask hard questions either, because you're pretty much at the stage where you are feeling out the school for your own fit, too.
  18. Really thought this was going to end as "pubicly."
  19. comp12! You seem familiar, but have you lost weight?
  20. The mail destroys me daily. Sometimes others will get our mail and hand me my envelopes wordlessly, and I just know. Except they're all just junk from credit card companies. It's my one year anniversary of getting a mailed rejection letter from Cornell, so I'm staring out the window right now. I had a dream last night that my MOM told me I was accepted to Harvard. My stomach did half a flip before I entered a lucid state where I'm like "WTF, this is a dream and now I hate life!"
  21. I definitely feel like a lot more people are posting music results this year than other years, including a lot of lurkers, and I can't believe that ALL of us posters and lurkers would be rejected pre-interview at Yale, I mean statistically. I can totally believe it about myself, haha, but everyone here?? Where are you, Yale? xylogirl, I applied to NYU and haven't heard a peep yet.
  22. I want to write one of those essential texts (article, book, whatever) that everyone has to read in the future (and tear apart!) to get to know my topic. Okay, that's kinda more like a lofty life goal than a bucket list item, actually. More like, I want to write an actual book. I also want to be fluent or close to fluent in another language. I want to get an award for teaching.
  23. +1 for the tag on this topic.
  24. Ugh I just saw the stream of Princeton rejections. Hope everyone's holding up and going out drinking tonight. I didn't apply, but I guess it's nice they don't wait 'til March to tell you bad news like some other schools I might be waiting on...
