  1. super size
  2. I've heard that more for undergrad admissions, and I pray it isn't true for graduate admissions. It's so much about fit and other weird non-quantifiable factors, that it's hard to say "Oh this applicant will deffo get accepted to Harvard, why should we even offer him anything?" AND there really are no safety schools anyway. (Also yes, professors say "deffo" now). I HAVE heard of programs informally contacting the very best applicants ASAP to nab them up quick, though. That's why waiting is the worst.
  3. "Oh! I remember this one, she emailed around in September. Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh she's not ready."
  4. according to the GradCafe forum homepage, happy birthday to Karajan! Are you really only 21? I'm not sure, but I don't think most humanities programs have enough money to fly their applicants IN THIS ECONOMY mostly because I've heard of a lot of people opting for the phone or skype interview.
  5. UCLA maybe interviews? I saw an interview notification in a past year on the results board.
  6. Ha, did anyone else accidentally submit Cornell's app a little prematurely? I thought I was going to get one final double check but NOPE.

I have to run away and play video games to get away from my anxiety right now.

Do it! Video games are the best escape from anxieties... well video games and books.

  7. I would like to have now the productivity I had on December 30 and 31. Thank you.

In that case, December 21 and 22 for me, please.

  8. I would like to have now the productivity I had on December 30 and 31. Thank you.

  9. I don't know. I've been trolling the history of music interviews on the results board but there's not much data. It's never clear which schools even interview, either.
  10. 8 down, 4 to go. But, playing some more with my christmas presents first.

huh. I actually didn't play with presents and now I'm 9 down, 3 to go. That was a strange burst of productivity.

  11. Thanks for reminding me to check. Yes, still incomplete. It also says they've received four GRE score reports although I've only taken the test twice.
  12. Dammit Karajan, stop applying to half of the same schools and same programs I'm applying to. There is no way in hell I can compete!!
  13. This. And because I use an already-sent SoP as a template for the next SoP I write, I take steps to do an initial edit just to avoid reading the already-sent SoP at all and seeing mistakes like "And that is why I would like to attend the Columbia"(<-the dangers of find/replace).
  14. I can give you no good advice as I've never been school interviewing, let alone at Eastman, but I'd like to know other people's answers to your questions in case I end up with an interview somewhere. Good luck! Without going on anything else, I would wear typical job-interview attire to be safe. I wouldn't assume that science interview dress would be different unless they do it super casual for some reason. Just because music is way awesome and fun does not mean that it's not also serious bidness to interview at a music school, I would think. My brother (undergraduate) is auditioning at Eastman in early Feb so if anyone also has advice on the second question of nearby hotels, that would be great too! We haven't booked anything yet.
  15. This one school is such a fantastic fit that I feel overwhelmed with the task of producing a good enough SoP.

  16. 7/12 done and over the hump. Chugging along...

  17. I did a similar thing, realizing I had sent three SoPs with a missing word in one sentence. I freaked out a little bit, but then I realized that they are just as likely, probably more likely, to read it as the correct sentence anyway, or at least understand the meaning. I'm pretty sure your mistake is small enough to be negligible. Anyway, you've submitted, and there's nothing you can do but let it go. Teensy proofing things are not damaging to your application (I am telling myself this too). Anyway, I see teensy proofing mistakes in faculty work all the time!
  18. Working on NYU right now. Christmas music is on in an attempt to get into the season. I even have an ugly Christmas sweater on. Well hello there, Embark! Missed you from last year. Do you like my sweater? No, please don't...not again...ugh, spontaneous log-out. Yay. My SoP. Critique for me please? "NYU is the school for me. At NYU, I'd like to study the history of the celebratory nature of bells, especially jingle bells. I'd also like to study the evolution of the Mannheim Rocket to the Mannheim Steamroller. In conclusion, summarily, did you know I say your name like this sometimes?: Nyoo."
  19. I'm so unconfident that I can't even post in my own forum anymore. This thread has really made me laugh over the last 15 minutes of reading though. I sympathize with everyone. 6/12 applications done so far. I was also shut out last year, but because I was waitlisted at one place it made me have this absolutely absurd hope that I was qualified. (I'm a Harvard McYaleton but I obviously don't think it helps if you can't prove you don't have turds for brains) But while I think my SOP is much better, the more I read my writing samples, the more I believe my brother in high school could have written them. Holy crap holy crap there's no time to embark on another research project. Ugh why did I even say "embark"!!!!! I think yesterday was a confident day. I actually told someone "Yeah, I'm going to actually be accepted everywhere this year so I'm going to have a really tough March with travel and all." UGH WHAT. I don't even have a master's.
  20. 12 applications + Christmas shopping + unemployment = D:

Don't cry, you can borrow some of my piles of film studies bounty.

  21. Hmm. When did you submit? Maybe it needs a physical person to say "wait, this IS complete" like my Northwestern App which was marked as Incomplete for a while because they didn't have TOEFL scores that I never took because I'm not international. My Penn app obviously says incomplete because I just applied yesterday and they haven't noted that they received my GRE scores, but hopefully they'll update that soon and I'll see if mine also still says "Incomplete"
  22. nope, just uploaded.
  23. what what what what. (I'm assuming you actually mean mb not kb) This is what I saw: "Beginning Fall 2010, we will begin accepting writing samples online that do not exceed 500 kbs. " And I did try to submit something around 700 kb and it didn't let me.
  24. Umm. Does anyone else know if Penn GSAS's application DOES NOT send an automated email after you submit? I'm pretty sure my email is correct.

    1. takethiswaltz

      takethiswaltz

They do send a confirmation, but I'm not sure it's automated. I submitted my application on the night of the 13th and woke up to a reply the next day.

Yep, I just got an email. Thanks!

  25. The danger of leaving things to the last minute: Penn's app allows for uploading of a writing sample in one spot, 500 kb limit. They want two writing samples, and the process of combining two writing samples to somehow be less than 500 kb involved removing all images, shrinking transcriptions to tiny tiny size, going back to times new roman from garamond, then UNEMBEDDING the fonts from the PDF document, changing everything to grayscale even though I thought it already was, and REMOVING my bibliographies, and finally, desperately, going to 1.5-spaced font. BARELY made the cut. also JSK did they fix the problem in time?
