I'm taking 10-15 pages to mean length of paper excluding the works cited. I hope that is right because my sample is 15 full pages. I actually need to trim a litte to get 4 lines off the 16th page.

I'm going through and adding textual evidence to my sample right now. Been working on that for a while now. It isn't additional research per se, but it is extremely time consuming going through a 300 page novel and trying to remember where in the book the quote I'm looking for is. I wish my hard copy novel had the control F function! -
Writing Sample Length?
lolopixie replied to Rupert Pupkin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
If a school is asking for 15-20 pages, I would not turn in a paper that is less than 15 pages, or at least very close to the 15 pages (maybe half way down the last page for example). For schools that are asking for no more than 20 or 25 pages, I would aim for close to 20 on those. Technically, 12-13 pages is less than, but it may look skimpy. My 2 cents. -
Any other fourth-timers out there?

How old were the sources that they said were too old? -
Oh! Thanks for the clarification! I just thought they were called the things I used to play with in the pediatrician's waiting room - didn't know they had a purpose other than 4 year olds pretending the beads are cars. LOL.

I just looked and refined search by English. The last post was in March 2011. I highly doubt people have gotten accepted to English programs already. I had my applications in last year in October and didn't hear back from anyone until late February. -

Ugh I could not imagine being somewhere I couldn't just sit in silence. Starbucks has never been a productive study area for me because if I hear the slightest noise I start paying attention to that. Too distracting. I have, however, been mainlining maxwell house with international delight cinnabon creamer this weekend. DELISH. Gotta bring the coffee house to the house! I'm determined to have my KU SOP done and the major edits done to my WS by tonight. I've also gotta squeeze in GRE study time - I take it again next Monday --- ah! I feel like I just took that thing. Good Lord, I gotta get off the website and back to work. Until my next mental break ------- -

My first deadline is December 31st. I feel for you guys that only have a few days left. I am so not prepared for all that yet! -
I agree!

I'm on vacation from Dec 24-Jan 2. If worst comes to worst, I'm holing up for a few days to finish Kansas. Luckily, they want everything sent electronically. Go Kansas for being Green - and not making us pay overnight shipping during the holidays!!

I have one writing sample that is 15 pages and has 8 sources. I've already bulked it up from a 12 pages paper, but not quite done with the editing process. It is a chapter from my thesis, so I have some manipulating to do so that it doesn't feel so jarring when I am throwing theory in from another chapter because it wasn't thoroughly explained in the section that I'm doing and had to pull to make it show that there was research behind it. It may end up with more sources once I'm done figuring out exactly what I need to pull for clarity that was explained earlier in the thesis. Kansas requires 2 samples, but they don't indicate a page limit/expectation on them sooooo I'm going to send the 15ish page one as well as an 8 page one that has been accepted for publication. I mention this article in my SOP, so although the shorter one isn't my primary focus, I mention the article and the themes behind it as another area of focus that I am interested in. 3 of the programs I'm applying to indicate they want a 10-15 page writing sample, so I'm sticking to that page length. LSU wants around 20 pages - luckily their deadline is January 25th, so I have time to work that out.

Go to the graduate school homepage, scroll to the very bottom, look for address...it is always there. -
Yea, I would reach out to another professor and ask. Explain the situation. Admit it is extremely last minute, but it could not be helped because it was unforeseeable on your behalf. If you're really excited about the program, you shouldn't let this from stopping you. Is it Riverside?

Every question asked on this board will get conflicting answers. Do what you think is best. Then I suggest praying to the academia gods that you do what is right! lol -
Balancing Work with Apps
lolopixie replied to Rupert Pupkin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm working 40 hours a week, working on applications, and studying to take the GRE again - in 2 weeks, ugh!!!! I do manage to do work most nights when I get home. My routine is: walk in door, put on pajamas, heat up some simplistic dinner, grab laptop, sit/eat/do some sort of work, work til eyes burn, go to sleep, do it over again. We just have to keep it up for a little while longer. It will be so worth it in the long run. -
Oh and I got that figure from the ETS website. Shocker that it varies. One more fact that this test needs to GO.

I won't be getting into Snobby McSnobbery either; however, I don't think I'm applying to any of those programs. Fit is more important to me than school name.

According to the GRE reports, the old scoring of 640 was approximately 84 percentile.

Expired GRE Scores?
lolopixie replied to hermia11's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
The schools are going to look at ones that are from the past 5 years. They may be able to see older ones, but if you have retaken and done better, the schools are going to use the new scores. I'm pretty sure we all have scores we would rather not send, but they will all go out. -
Oh, I'm sorry. That just really struck a cord with me because people do that and I'm so over people bragging and then wanting to be told they are great. I understand what you were going for.
