  1. I like KU. They sent me an email to let me know all of my application information had been received. Yes, almost everything is submitted online, but I mailed hard copies of the LORs. I like the schools that say "hey, just fyi - we got all your stuff you spent a lot of time and money sending us and we'll have decisions by mid-February". Go Kansas for your consideration of the craziness and anxiety applicants have. Ward off the unnecessary phone calls by just letting us know everything is good to go for review. It is the little things that make so much sense to me
  2. If you are applying straight to a PhD program, you definitely want to check the school sites. Some indicate that you must have a MA in English in order to apply. I wouldn't apply to those schools...or would contact the department first to see if it is worthwhile applying. No need to waste money if the school is going to want the English degree.
  3. My applications are not requesting this; however, they all want self-reporting GRE scores. Since I took the test in December, I am still waiting for the score report to be mailed. Ergo, I had to send the print out from the online ETS site, which lists the other schools I sent the scores to.
  4. I didn't take the subject exam because the schools I'm applying to do not require it. I'm not 100% sure how highly the subject scores are looked at. It is very debatable. However, I don't imagine that the scores will be looked at differently because you're a non-native English speaker. While I understand the hurdle you are clearing taking a heinous test in another language, you are applying to programs that require fluency in English reading/writing skills.
  5. I think we all do this stuff in some way, shape, or form.
  6. If it is not required, and there is nothing worthwhile to contribute, I wouldn't put anything in there.
  7. I only need one as well lol! I'm hoping that the first school I hear back from is an acceptance!! I'm thinking about finding a bunch of four leaf clovers, bunny feet, number 7's, etc., and decorating my apartment in them for the next few months. Is that going over the top?
  8. I am so glad that I didn't have to take the subject test. This thread just makes me furious for everyone.
  9. Purdue and Mississippi stuff mailed out. Four down, one to go. I know the waiting process is going to suck, but I am so glad to be done with the majority of the applications. It is taxing in itself.
  10. I feel it is time that you send the message that was recommended in a previous thread about this: "Do you want there to be another death in the family?" It has now become appropriate.
  11. Last year, after my across the board rejections, I was in disbelief that it actually happened. Then in the first week of April, I checked my mail and there was a lonely letter from LSU in there. I got so excited for a minute thinking that I had been put on some sort of wait list and I was getting an acceptance letter. WRONG! Although the online application had been updated to advise me of my rejection, the grad school sent my rejection letter a few weeks later. It was brutal.
  12. Technically, I didn't have to mail anything to Kansas, but since I couldn't get the email out to the recommenders until I actually submitted the application, overnight packages had to go out - I had to mail stuff in for Miami because they don't take the writing samples on the online application. I'm only mailing my transcripts to Purdue (control freak and want to make sure they get there). Ole Miss requires documentation actually be sent. Paperless so much less stressful...I know it got there and was uploaded!
  13. It is my 2nd round applying as well, and I am reapplying to 2 programs.
  14. If it wasn't terrentially raining here today, I would have gone back to the post office today to send off Purdue and Ole Miss materials. Instead, I took a nap.
  15. Miami and Kansas applications were submitted online last night, and I overnighted the supplemental material today. 2 down. I'm finishing Ole Miss and Purdue today. Then I'll just have LSU. When I tell you the anxiety I was getting just submitting those applications last night, I really was about to have a panic attack! I had to walk away from the computer.
  16. This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. Do not agree to do something if you are not going to follow through. It isn't like your future plans are hanging on this person submitting a letter that he agreed to write months ago or anything. I'm sorry that you are going through this, cquin. I would definitely send the email to the other professors, explain to them what happened, and pray for the best. The good thing is you contacted the schools. I hope it all works out.
  17. I don't think any professor would treat you like you are a waste of time, if you are contributing. There were 2 "older" ladies in my program - one was 66 and the other 58. One of them did put in good input and actively participated, the other one...well she was treated like a waste of time because she was. Her favorite was to go on 30 minute dramatic dialogues about nothing. I would not let your age hinder your want to go to grad school, but you want to make sure you go only if you are serious about it. Regardless of age, in my experience, professors only treat you seriously if you take the program seriously.
  18. Yes, it is realistic that not everyone will get jobs, but I am still confident in getting the PhD where you can. You don't have a shot if you don't have one. Even then it is what you do while you're at the program.
  19. You would choose leggo God!! Hope you didn't get another gnarly virus.
  20. I cannot listen to anything if I am reading; however, if I'm writing I listen to hip-hop. Weird, I know.
  21. Don't despair! He is going to send them in. I don't know why they wait until the last second...or later...when we give them months notice. My last ones were submitted today, yes before deadlines, but I sent out emails in September and had all the forms out to the professors by October. Two and a half months to send these is a little absurd.
  22. FINALLY! My last LOR submitted the online ones today and is mailing the two paper ones. Glad to know I can really submit and won't have to overnight packages!
