Last year the PCA/ACA was in San Antonio. It was my first trip to Texas, exclusing lay-overs in Dallas. That was such a cool town to visit. -
0% Confidence of Acceptance
lolopixie replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I teeter from moment to moment on whether I will be accepted this year or not. Being rejected across the board last year makes my confidence shake on the daily. While I know that I am competitive, it can come down to such minor things that are out of my control. I have a plan B...I'm up for a promotion at work, but I don't want plan B to be my life. I've been very diligent at work since I was rejected last year. I understand that a life in academia might not happen, so I wanted to start some sort of career as a back-up plan. I just can't come to terms that my back-up plan might become plan A. I've worked too hard and long to not be able to pursue my dream. -

I'm still not done with any of them! I plan on having 4/5 applications submitted by next weekend. Still waiting on my GRE scores to post so I can fill out the info on the application accurately, and I'm finalizing my writing sample. The 5th application isn't due until January 25th, so I have a little time to muddle over that. -

I'm not going anywhere fancy for the holidays. I'm going about an hour up the road to spend Christmas with my family, and then I will be right back home the day after. Totally looking forwad to my break though. I just have to get through one more week and then 10 glorious days off of work, but it will be mixed with application submitting craziness! -

I anticipated the LOR ordeal with not being able to send out requests until after the application is submitted, so I opened the apps in October to see which schools did that and sent out paper copies for those. I'm not going to be able to submit until around the 20th because I'm waiting for my GRE scores. I guess it is for the best because my paycheck on the 23rd isn't dedicated to anything. -

I'm mad as hell that my employer decided to tell me today (well my whole department) that we are going under mandatory overtime. I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO WORK OVERTIME! 40 hours a week is more than enough to take away from my applications, and then 3 weeks before they are due you have the audacity to tell me that you are making me work extra?!!??! Anddddddd I am working ahead on all of my files, while people that are currently working voluntary overtime are behind on all of their stuff because they are just milking the clock!!! -

I'm just ready to have them submitted!! I emailed my prof that I'm waiting on for LOR and she emailed me right back saying it was coming and not to worry. I just want to get the show on the road! On the road to the waiting game... -
Normal. I have 3 that do that and it picked up from an application I did last year.

Where my Duke applicants at?!

LSU and Ole Miss reported less than 100 on their websites. -
Okay, so the English grad department page indicates requirements for the SOP are: Supply a personal statement of purpose; this statement should describe your intellectual interests and professional goals and explain why you think Purdue is a good place to pursue them. So I assumed there was no word limit. However, the general grad school application SOP indicates: A statement of purpose is required for all degree-seeking applicants. Please submit a statement of approximately 300-500 words concerning your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at Purdue, and your professional plans, career goals, and research interests. You also may explain any irregularities or special circumstances applicable to your background and elaborate on your special abilities, awards, achievements, scholarly publications, and/or professional history. Does this mean the SOP should only be 500 words? That is a total drag if I have to reformat this to 500 words. I'm emailing the department now, but I don't know. I was so happy to have a great 964 word SOP for them!

Where my Duke applicants at?!
lolopixie replied to cquin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Little late posting to this, but my concern with Duke accepting 8 versus other programs is that Duke receives about 500 applications each year. While other programs that I'm applying to put up that they receive about 96 applications and accept 8-10 students is a little more reassuring than the programs that accept the same amount and get 5 times the applicants. -
how did you choose your WS?
lolopixie replied to indalomena's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Programs are looking for your research and critical abilities, at least US programs, so I would not send in the manuscript portion as it doesn't sound like that portion focuses on that. While each chapter may be stellar and standalone, they will not show the whole of your scholarship. I am using a chapter from my thesis that could have been standalone, but I edited it to pull from an earlier chapter that showed the research and worked it into the critical analysis of the chapter. I would recommend using the critical analysis chapter, and making sure to show the research that you did for it. You may have to tweak it and work other portions of the thesis in there. Thesis chapters, while probably the best work you have compiled, are tricky for submission.
