you definitely don't need a car if you're living around bu. it depends on what your definition of "affordable" is. studios and one bedrooms will be $1000+. A nice room, with two or three roommates, will probably be $650+. avoid allston (undergraduate ghetto).

i had one publication where i was 7th (!) at the time of applications last year, 2 first author posters, and a couple of other posters where i was second author. i was accepted into 4 phd programs for psych/neuro. having the publications certainly helps you, but i think what is most important is how your recommenders can lavish your hard work resulting in the posters with praise, etc. talk it up in your personal statement too! i think what is most important is not that you have posters, but that you have a thorough understanding of the scientific process and that you're able to produce good work in your research area. this should be reflected in your recs and your sop, and should (i hope!) make you a stronger applicant. if you have these things, are a good fit in your lab of choice (have contacted potential advisor, etc), and you have luck on your side, hopefully something positive will happen

You're fine. I had a 3.5 general GPA in college, good GRE scores, and two years of research experience post undergrad. I got into a top ten program and a few other respected programs. Your research experience trumps that C+ or B- you got in some random class your freshman year of college.

your advisor is ridiculous. go visit your dying grandmother. you will regret it if you don't. maybe fly there and back if your advisor is desperate to have you back.

you can get a gallon of milk at any convenience store. you can take public transportation to a shaws, a whole foods, and a trader joes.

Is applying to Developmental Ph.D. programs worth my while?

yes. you can always look for a research assistant job after graduation if it doesn't work out. -
Inman is a nice area--maybe a 15 minute walk to the Harvard Campus. I would say a studio would be at the very cheapest about $1000/month, and a 1 bedroom would be higher than that. You'd probably be better off having a roommate--from my experience the Harvard Square area is the most expensive place to rent in Cambridge, but rents taper off the farther you go down Mass Ave. And by taper off I don't mean you'll be finding a cheap 1 bedroom or studio. But a $1500/month 2 bedroom apartment might become a $1400 2 bedroom apartment the farther out you get. Also, and this might be obvious, the closer you are to the T stop the more expensive your room will be. No need for a car!

Commuting from Porter to Kendall is nothing. You will be fine. 20 minutes at worst, if you have to wait for a train. I would rather live in Porter than Central Square, but that's just personal preference. I've lived in Boston for the past 6 years, and have never felt unsafe anywhere. Somerville is awesome in general. I lived in Allston for a year and it was awful (undergraduate ghetto, etc).

Hmm...does anyone know how long it takes after officially accepting via the website to getting the info about setting up a Brandeis account?

I was accepted to CMU's cognitive program in early March. In the acceptance letter they mentioned a waitlist, and I would assume that those people were in the know about it. CMU had two interview weekends, both in late February. So they're probably just being crappy about sending out rejections

Anyone heard anything from MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences?

you've been rejected. -
When Do People Usually Hear for Waitlists
cupcake_phd replied to jennyfields's topic in Waiting it Out
why are you sitting on three waitlist spots? you can only accept one... -
Anything Tufts related happen to anyone lately? I saw that someone had gotten a rejection letter : ( I woefully remain on the waitlist. It certainly is coming down to the wire this year, isn't it?

how often has an extended silence resulted in acceptance?

contact your poi to see what the deal is? -
That was Princeton's rejection email this year as well. I bet they send it out every year.

Social Psychology- Waitlisted limbo
cupcake_phd replied to hibeuxhereaux's topic in Psychology Forum
nowhere yet. i'm waiting on the decisions of two schools (both pending funding, sigh) and i have two acceptances i would accept over pitt. i just wanted to free up the spot to someone on the waitlist, because i know how insane this process is. i actually got accepted to a neuroscience program like 20 minutes ago. a neuroscience phd sounds bad ass. -

Tough Decision Between UC.Berkeley and MIT
cupcake_phd replied to liuaqiang1's topic in Decisions, Decisions
i mean if you really do not know which one you want, pull a name out of a hat and go with your gut feeling (are you relieved or disappointed). going to mit over berkeley or vice versa is not going to negatively affect you. come on. -
berkeley. unless you have very wealthy and generous parents.
-
my guess is that it's the kinder, gentler wait list. as in, you would have been accepted last year but now that the economy tanked you have to wait. not that i'm bitter about my own situation or anything...
-
Allston is obnoxious. Avoid.
-
I can't tell you about being accepted, but I am looking forward to my rejection letter from WashU. Did the cognitive program have an interview? I'm pretty sure none of the profs I applied to were taking students. I really thought this out well

did boston college even TAKE any psychology students for next fall?
