I've been offered a TAship of 20 hours a week (I'm not quite sure if they mean 20 hours of teaching, or if they include preparation time in that figure). It sounds like a lot to me. I've been a TA before, during my MA, but then I taught for just 4 hours a week, and I don't remember any of my friends doing any more than 8. How difficult would a 20-hour TAship be, especially in my first year of a PhD program in the social sciences (Communications)?

MediaMom, congrats on UAlbany! I've been accepted to UConn! I've been offered a 20-hour TAship - sounds like a lot. During my MA, I taught for just 4 hours a week.

I think rejection letters should come in the form of "choose your own adventure"-type stories. There would be five or six different endings, some of them with you going to school elsewhere, some with you finding a job, but none with you going to that particular program.

I'm thinking of sending e-mails to some of the programs I haven't heard from yet, not to ask when I'll hear their decisions, but rather to show my interest and remind them that I exist. Should I e-mail the POIs (the ones I already e-mailed before submitting the application) or the heads of graduate programs?

George Washington has an MA program in Comm, right? I applied to the PoliSci Ph.D program there and mentioned I would like to work with people from Communications, after one of the professors there told me they were looking for students who want to do that. I still haven't heard from them.

Congratulations! Unfortunately, if the cohort is just six and I haven't heard anything yet, it doesn't sound promising for me. Thanks for the info, MediaMom. I guess I shouldn't visit Albany's status page until the second week of March.

I don't get what the fun is in posting fake results on the results survey. It doesn't even make the competition screw up their application, since the applications were completed long ago. Does anyone understand this? Maybe this is a question we should ask in the psychology forum

According to the results survey, someone was accepted to NYU's Department of Media, Culture and Communication. I haven't heard from them myself yet. Congrats! Is it anyone active in this forum? MediaMom, if I remember correctly, Albany's website said they'd give an answer six to eight weeks after the completion of the application, rather than after the deadline. So, if you applied six to eight weeks ago, you should hear from them very soon. As for myself, my 6-8 weeks will be up in early March.

Do schools that contact people by phone use that method for everyone, including students from overseas? If so, I better update my programs about the fact that I'm currently in the States with an American number and I don't have access to the number they have.

The admissions process is taking a toll on me. I have regressed to the behavior of my nine year old self - I bought a copy of the latest issue of MAD Magazine. Just $5.99 - cheap!

Looks like there was a UPenn blood bath today. I was one of the casualties. Sorry to hear that you were too.

How about working at a graduate school admissions office?

So, if in previous years UPenn sent out its decisions within a 2 or 3 day timeframe, both acceptances and rejections, I assume we should hear from them by the end of the day.

What's that thing you say when two people say the same thing at once? I know that in Hebrew it is "chips on you!" (it doesn't make sense in Hebrew either) The fact that you haven't heard anything does not mean you've been rejected. After all, only one person said they heard back so far. It could take them a while to get to everyone.

Coincidentally, I'm wearing a Patriots shirt right now, although I rooted for the Giants yesterday. It was just the only available clean shirt that I'm not planning to pack (I'm moving to Philadelphia tomorrow). I didn't watch the game. It was in the middle of the night here.

Interesting. My research deals with Israeli and American entertainment media's depictions of Middle Eastern conflicts and diplomacy.
