  1. I just sent you a private message.
  2. Nice to see someone else interested in PoliComm! I also listed American Politics as my subfield. I'm interested in the intersection of entertainment and politics, as well as political discourse and persuasion.
  3. I studied in Israel. The good news is that I e-mailed the program in question and they said I didn't need it. I guess they changed their policies without updating their website.
  4. Thanks for the advice. I guess I should get a P.O Box once I arrive in the States. Either that or have my parents scan and e-mail me anything that arrives by mail before I have a US address. I assume most of the decision letters and forms are online anyway, so there wouldn't be too much snail mail to deal with.
  5. What a coincidence - I watched Inglorious Basterds for the first time just two days ago. Great movie!
  6. February is a stressful time for anyone waiting for admission decisions, and on top of the regular anxiety, I'm also moving to a new city (Philadelphia) and a new/old country (new/old because I lived in the States when I was in preschool). So now I'm also stressed about what happens if universities send me snail mail to Israel which arrives after I leave. Also, it will take time to get an apartment, so I wouldn't really have an alternative address to give programs at first. It might also take me a few days to get a cell phone. I even had a thought that might be just me ridiculously overthinking stuff: if I notify UPenn that I moved to Philadelphia, they might find me overconfident (although I'm moving there for a different reason), and decide not to accept me. Has anyone else ever moved in the midde of decision season? Am I worrying too much?

    Fun Facts!

    Is the opposite called ailihphilia?
  10. I also used the National Communication Association's Doctoral Reputational Study. It's from 2004, but it seems like it is the most recent ranking by subfield.
  11. Congrats on the acceptances!
  12. I also applied to Ohio State, but only a few days before the January 15 deadline (and my last letter or recommendation was submitted there on the 14th), so I'm guessing there's time until they get to my file.
  13. I just got an e-mail from NYU Steinhardt. That made me jump. Then I saw it was just an invitation to an online chat about their summer abroad program.
  14. You're necrotic? You should really see a doctor about that. Or a coroner. As for your chances: it's all about research fit, less about the stats.

    Fun Facts!

    And a Palestine, TX.
  17. Duke sends me these automatic application status updates every week or two, and it makes me jump every time. I wonder if this will cause a "boy who cried wolf" effect, and when the actual decision from Duke arrives I'll ignore it because I'll just think it's one of those updates.
  18. Thanks Ennue. What kind of stuff did you ship? We thought that whatever we can't bring with us in our luggage and carry-ons we'll just buy in the States, but maybe there are things we didn't think about that we should take from here.

  20. I think only a spouse and children can be added as dependants and not adult siblings.

  22. Thanks for the advice. I'll get travel insurance at first - I don't like the idea of having no health insurance for even a short time. I already have a SSN (and after entering it into so many application forms, I now remember it for the first time in my life). Since my sister is going to be a post-doc, we might be able to get an on-campus furnished apartment. We still have to look into that.
  23. She has officially given up on submitting the letter on-line. I just realized I have her letter of recommendation in a sealed and signed envelope, and I'll just mail it. It will take about a week to arrive, but it's better than nothing. Too bad I didn't think about it sooner. Now I'm glad UConn (not the same program I'm having trouble with) changed its system in the middle of application season. They originally required that all materials be sent via snail mail, but before I mailed everything, they upgraded their system to allow on-line LORs - and that's how I have the extra letter to save the day.
  24. Yes, she'll be doing a post-doc.
