Most of my rejections are in now and they do not bother me as much as they did at first. If/when the rejections from the schools I am on the wait list come, then I will have a bad couple of days.
You can volunteer in a lab. I do not believe you have to be a student, you just need to professor/researcher to be cool with you being part of it (I do not think that would be a problem if you are a volunteer). Especially if you explain your situation to them and then you just have to show up when you are supposed to and do the work you are supposed to do.
A masters program would not be bad to consider if you have little psych experience. Hope everything works out well for you.

Dazed and Confused is another great one. Dawn of the Dead (George Romero version) and Zombieland are really good too.
I had a similar situation and went with the masters. It has helped out my applications to Ph.D. programs, but this always varies from person to person. Hope things work out well for you.
