Gossip Re U Chicago
QuentinComp replied to limelight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
From looking at past years and seeing posts from those who are knowledgeable about U Chicago, it is likely that those of us who have not heard yet have had our apps referred to their MAPH Program. I live in MA and have not yet received any word from them either. Good luck! -
Thanks for the info. "Not accepted" here as well :-/

Ok, so there is now an acceptance on the board - I am wondering if anyone has any more information? Thanks -

Was your friend a literature or a CW applicant? The deadline for apps (for lit at least) was January 15th, so early February seems a little early to hear back. If this sounds defensive, it's just because I am starting to get anxious. Tell your friend I said congrats! -

I caught that too, but it says for creative writing. I applied for lit. -
That is rough :-/ I had a similar experience today. I received a pretty big box from a university address (maybe a school was trying to bribe me with a large box of cash?!) but then I realized it was from a school that I did not apply to. My sister's fiance sent me stuff for their wedding from his father's office at UT Austin.

I do, but, alas, nothing in the mail today. Here's to hoping for an afternoon e-mail...
-
I hope this doesn't worry you, but I was an MA applicant to UW who has already received a decision (rejection). It is very likely that my app didn't make it through a first elimination round or something like that. If this does make you more anxious, maybe this will help: since I (and a few other MA candidates, I think) have been rejected, you are still in the running! Good luck!

Gossip Re U Chicago
QuentinComp replied to limelight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Nada. Including Chicago (which is either rejection or MAPH offer) I am still waiting to hear from SEVEN schools. While MAPH is not my first choice, I would give it more consideration if it were my only option. Ahhh my mind is just running through so many scenarios... -

I am in MA and have not received a rejection yet either, so I am wondering if my application has been referred to the MAPH program. Some sort of mass e-mail letting us know what's going on would be cool... Good luck Cicada. -

I'm wondering if it would pay to send them an e-mail, or just continue to hang tight. Being patient is sooooooo hard! -

Still waiting... -
Wow, I am very happy to see this thread - not that I like seeing people so anxious, but I thought I was the ONLY person left who has yet to hear from MANY schools (7 in my case). I have assumed some rejections but am trying to keep up hope. I was happy to receive an e-mail from SUNY Buffalo today... I had assumed rejection from them, but I was assured that although I applied for the PhD program, my application is still being considered amongst the MA applications. Right now, this comes as great news to me. Let's all try to remain as optimistic as possible, ok? Of course it sucks to feel like we are completely in the dark, and we attempt to analyze the results posted here (e.g. someone received admittance to U Iowa, so I must be rejected...) but maybe schools just are not organized this year and are taking longer. Soooo let's all meet in some virtual bar and take virtual shots and try to relax and have some fun during this horrible anxious time.

After directing me to their website for "more information," this is the response I received in the Fall. Now that I look at it, it does seem kind of ambiguous in terms what program to apply to, "Our MA/Phd program is structured as such that students holding a BA must enter at the MA level first. Assuming satisfactory progress is made, MA students move internally onto the PhD program once the MA is earned. Candidates are chosen with full confidence that they can proceed to the PhD level, and since we are a fully integrated program the transition from MA to PhD is internal and non-competitive.If you hold a BA degree, please apply for the MA." -

I couldn't find the information on the site so I e-mailed to ask. While my question was answered they made some sort of comment like "please see website for information before e-mailing questions." But... it's not there. Along with other important information - like when you click on more information for their cultural theory concentration, it says "we're not sure what you're looking for here." (Yeah, very ironic.) But I'm sure they must receive apps straight to PhD program all the time, and most likely just send them to the MA program - that's my guess at least. -

Don't beat up yourself over it - I was also told that applicants without an MA are only offered admission to their MA program - you cannot apply directly to their PhD program. -

Hey Woolfie, I was told in the Fall that MA students rarely receive funding during their first year, but that sometimes funding becomes available during the second year. However, they stressed that there is no exact rule or formula, and it is more a case by case basis. Hope that helps, and good luck! -
So THIS might sound snarky, but WHEN IS IOWA GOING TO NOTIFY?!?! I am not expecting to get in, but have somehow managed to keep a glimmer of a hope, and I just want to know!!!

Advice for ugrad sophomore
QuentinComp replied to basicpolitics's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Would you recommend doing independent study junior year or just taking seminar classes, and then doing an independent study senior year? I've read the Eagleton book, it's really good. I just feel like the expectation is to have an encyclopedic knowledge of contemporary criticism--to be able to regurgitate Butler versus Austin, etc.--is this a complete misperception? -

Not sure if this helps or not, but I just called to ask about the time frame, and she said MA notifications take a while - she said they'd be notifying for the next two weeks. Gahh I just want to get in somewhere!
