I'm a 19th Century Americanist focusing on social/cultural and gender history. My writing sample was on Civil Liberties During World War I, so outside my time period.

I've registered for most of my classes, just waiting on an independent study that seems to be complicated to register for. Looks like I just have to get that done before August 24th to avoid a late registration fee, so that should work. I'll be moving to Pullman on August 1st.

I just graduated from CGU and am moving out of the area shortley, but I think I can help a bit. In terms of housing, avoid the CGU housing, it is overpriced and has a lot of problems. I'd suggest Brighton Park Apartments, which is where I've lived for the two years I've been at CGU. It's a great complex, well maintained, and the rent isn't that bad. (If you do decide to look into living there, contact me by PM and I can give you more info. Also, I do admit that if you say I referred you I get money off of my rent.) If you can't afford to live in Claremont, look into the nearby towns, but be sure to check out the neighborhood first, because there are some bad ones nearby. I wasn't in the same program you're going into, so I can't comment on that. Anything else I can help with about CGU and Claremont, feel free to ask.

Anyone have any suggestions about where to shop in and near Pullman? Any stores to avoid? Also, what restaurants are good, and which should be avoided?

Glad I could help. When will you be moving to Pullman?

To find a place to live, first check if the school has a website with information about off campus housing. They might have ads, or a list of apartment complexes, or other similar usefull things. As for finding a roomate, I have avoided roomates in grad school. I've had such bad luck with the roomates I had in college that I didn't want to go through the hassle. You might want to consider if having a roomate is really worth it to you cost wise considering the possible annoyance and distraction.

I posted about my visit to Pullman on the City Guide board.

I just got back from a visit to Pullman. I really liked it there. It seems like a great town. I'm about to go traveling again, so I'll give you a quick rundown of the apartments I looked at. Helene's Property Place -230 Anthony: Apartments were quite dated, especially on the second floor. Looked like they were from the 70s with shag carpet, odd bathroom wallpaper, and gold swirley mirrored walls. Apartment Rentals -Valley: It was a nice apartment, above street level though on the first floor, and got lots of light. -205 (on military hill): This was my second choice apartment, top floor, lots of light, indoor staircase. Coug: -Only had one apartment, it was on the first level. It looked nice, but cost hundreds more than the others and had a high pet deposit and pet rent. Glendimer: The apartment company I'm going to be renting from. They had lots of places available, no specific pet rent or pet deposit, though part of the deposit is non-refundable due to pets. Lowest rent among those I looked at. Friendly helpful manager. If you get an apartment on Ann Street on the top level you'll have a great view, and we might be neighbors. 27 Ann Street was available, as was another top level apartment in another building. Pullman has lots of nice looking restaurants, and the ones I tried were good. I can confirm that Cougar Gold cheese and Ferdinand's ice cream are tasty. That's all, have to run now. Hope this helps!

I find these rankings somewhat surprising, particularly that the university where I'm getting my MA was listed in the top 50. The university that I'll be attending in the Fall is not ranked.

All I know about housing so far is what people posted in the Pullman thread. I'm headed to Pullman to look at apartments from Sunday to Wednesday, so I'll let you know what I find once I get back.

I'm headed to Pullman at the end of the month to look at apartments, I'll post about what I find in case it would be helpful. I'm looking for the same sort of apartment that you are, pet friendly (for 2 cats), one bedroom, safe, near a bus route and quiet.

Anyone else headed to Washington State University in Pullman, WA next Fall? I'll be starting my Ph.D. in U.S. History there.

Best city to go to grad school in your opinion?
kahlan_amnell replied to Monika's topic in The Lobby
And many people don't want to live there. I'm sick of perpetual warm weather, no visible change of seasons, and almost constant sunshine. Give me a place with four seasons, where it rains more than a few days a year, snows in the winter, and the leaves change color in the Fall. Get me away from this car culture that causes people to be shocked when I tell them I don't own a car, and that isn't a problem for me. I'm from the East Coast originally, and I'd never want to stay in SoCal long term. Glad to be out of here in August. -
Where can I find more information about Campus Link? I Googled it and didn't find anything. I'm planning to fly into Spokane for a visit to WSU at the end of the month, and it would be great to know about other airport transportation options besides Wheatland Express, which only runs once a day except on Fridays.

I Will Be Attending [FILL IN THE BLANK]! (History)

I will be attending Washington State University for 19th Century United States History. -
I've pretty much decided I'm going to WSU. However, I still haven't heard from CGU. I contacted them yesterday to see if I could get any more information about when I might hear, but haven't heard anything back. I just want this to be over so I can start planning for next year.
-
Now that it looks like I can say for sure that I'm going to WSU, it looks like a lot of apartments in Pullman are already rented. DABCO seems to have no more one bedroom apartments available in it's new pet friendly complex. There are two bedrooms there, or there is one more one bedroom available at their luxury rental. But that is available earlier than I can move, and it costs a lot more. So, any other recommendations for good rental companies or apartment complexes? Any thoughts on the following companies: http://www.apartmentrentalsinc.com/ http://www.coughousing.com/ http://www.helenespropertyplace.com/ http://www.wilru.com/

I checked the status site just now and saw I was rejected. Good luck to those still waiting to hear.

The truth about living off of your Stipend
kahlan_amnell replied to sonnyday's topic in Officially Grads
Sounds like that should be enough to live on in Philadelphia, but I'm no expert on the cost of living in that city. The cost of a used car varies a great deal, you'll have to check what is available when you get there. The cost of car insurance also varies by the type of car, and by where you live. -
*Sigh* People really shouldn't have to call them to get this information. I guess I'll call them tomorrow or Wednesday. I've already called them several times to get what little information I have.

Best city to go to grad school in your opinion?
kahlan_amnell replied to Monika's topic in The Lobby
It depends on many factors, such as what kind of climate you like, what size city you like living in, and what features of a city are important to you. California is not for everyone, I'm looking forward to leaving Southern California myself. The title seems to exclude towns and rural areas, which sounds like to best place for me to go to grad school. -
I wish they would just get around to telling everyone who is waitlisted that then.
-
I'm pretty sure that what they told me was they planned to let people on the waitlist know if they were accepted or rejected by the 15th. But yeah, it might be later. I just want this to be over with. I don't particularly care if Rutgers accepts me or not.
-
Yeah, they said they would let people know "by April 15th." I'm hoping for sooner rather than later, my family is starting to pressure me to accept another offer.
