Entertainment Bundle: TV, Landline, and/or Internet?

Thus why I always have at least one traditional landline phone. That was what I meant by "basic phone". -
Digital Voice Recorder for Lectures
kahlan_amnell replied to TKassis's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
I can't recommend one, but are you sure you really want to record all your lectures? Why do you want to do so? Will you really have the time and inclination to listen to them again? If you really do want to record lectures, you will have to get permission to do so from each professor, assuming that by "my lectures" you mean lecture you are attending rather than ones you are giving. -
Entertainment Bundle: TV, Landline, and/or Internet?

I agree, except for the landline. It is necessary for emergencies and bad weather. In an emergency, cell phones often are not reliable, so having a landline is a good idea to be able to reach people. Also, things like Skype don't have true 911, which makes me nervous. They don't route you to the local 911 dispatcher, they do something else, which I imagine could cause delays. Also, any phone that relies on the internet will be down if the power is out. A basic phone for a landline doesn't need electricity, and works even when the power is out. -

Eh, I have time for stuff other than school, I just don't find TV to be a good use of my free time. If I had a specific TV show I wanted to watch every week, I'd have to plan things around being home and not doing work at that time. I'd rather just watch a movie or go on the internet in my spare time, that can be done whenever I'm home and done with work. -
Real insurance can be very hard to get if you aren't in absolutely perfect condition. In states that don't have laws against this sort of thing, just being overweight can get you rejected from most insurance. Grad student insurance is much less picky, it accepts pretty much every student that applies.

Fortunately not every wants or needs to get into elite programs, otherwise the competition for them would be even more intense.
-
I think you would have to give more details for people to answer that question. What do you mean by better? Do you mean which admissions process is better? Which is a better place to go to grad school? Something else entirely?

My undergrad GPA was under 3.0 and I got some Bs in my MA program and still got into a Ph.D. program.

Graduate school is nowhere near as fun as undergrad

That depends on what you find fun. -
I'm back and yet again looking for recommendations! Hope I'm not annoying anyone. Can anyone recommend a good dentist in Pullman? How about a good cat sitter? Is the veterinary school clinic at WSU a good place to take pets for their ordinary vet visits?
-
I'm from a big city, but I have lived in small towns before and liked them. Not sure I will have time to get to those places that often, I don't have a car. Anyway, thanks for the recommendations!

I don't know the model name, but it is one of the smaller ones by Manhattan Portage.

I use a messenger bag, or occasionally a backpack if I need to get lots of books from the library. I find that a small messenger bag is the right size to carry the stuff I need for classes.

I mostly buy textbooks on amazon.com, and find their prices lower than the bookstore. If you need them delivered fast, joining amazon prime can be worth it, though there is a yearly membership fee. There are also sellers of used books on amazon, but I don't like the shipping fees, those add up fast.
-
Thanks for the reccomendations! Usually if I want delivery, it isn't because it is too far to walk, it is because I'm too tired or otherwise don't feel like heading out to get food. So, here's another question: my birthday is soon after I move to Pullman, and my mother is coming to visit. Could anyone reccomend a place for a nice, somewhat fancy dinner?

You didn't specify which area you meant. Perhaps you meant to post this as a reply rather than a new thread?

Do all schools require a writing sample?
kahlan_amnell replied to gurumaster8899's topic in Applications
No, not all schools do. What they should contain varies by discipline, but in general it should be something you consider your best work. Check what the schools you want to apply to require, length requirements for writing samples vary a good bit, and as noted, some don't require them at all. -

Thanks for the recommendations! I think that once I get there I will be dining at restaurants or getting delivery a lot for a while, since the movers tell me that it could take up to 14 days for my belongings to get to Pullman. In the meantime I'll have to make do with what can fit into two suitcases for making my apartment work, including preparing food.
-
As an add on to my previous post: Can anyone recommend some restaurants in Pullman that deliver? Bonus points if it is something other than a pizza place, since I think I know about the major pizza places there already. Extra bonus points if it is a Chinese restaurant.

Yay another WSU person! When do you plan to move? Have you found a place to live yet? There is a thread for Pullman on the City Guide board, it has a lot of helpful information.

Entertainment Bundle: TV, Landline, and/or Internet?

I have a wireless router that a previous roommate gave me, but I'm not currently using it. In a one bedroom apartment I don't find I need to use the internet in my bedroom instead of the main room. It depends if it is worth it to you. I imagine a wireless router would be cheaper than a wireless modem, and it serves the same purpose. However, it can slow down your connection a bit. -

I barley ever watch TV, so I'm probably going for Internet and landline, which is what I have now. Landlines are good to have for emergencies, since cell phones don't always work. By landline, I mean one from a phone company, not one from a cable company that relies on a cable modem. Those are useless if the power goes out, and don't have real 911. I couldn't manage without internet at home. As for TV, I manage with the free channels, and I barley even watch those. I think it has been months since I last used the TV for watching TV, I mostly use it for video games and DVDs.
