Thanks for all the information! Good to know that the Spokane airport is cheaper, I was noticing flights to and from the Pullman airport were expensive. Is the the airport bus service you mentioned this one: http://www.wheatlandexpress.com/airportshuttle.html? Sounds good, but only leaving once per day except on Fridays is a bit limiting. Since they stop at places other than WSU I assume that they still run during WSU vacations? I checked to see if there were any other airport shuttles from Spokane to Pullman and found All-Ways Transportation. It looks like they might be a shared ride sort of service, where the person traveling can determine what time they want to leave. Do you have any experience with that company, and if so is that how it works? In general, how would you recommend getting to the Spokane airport if you need to do so at a time other than when the bus goes there? Are there cab companies you would recommend that aren't outrageously expensive? Also, thanks for pointing out the WSU LiveJournal community, I joined and will be taking a look at it. I have the same user name over at LiveJournal.

Probably soon. I'm thinking I'll try to wait until the end of the month and contact if I haven't heard by then.

You need to ask the school what their reply date is. It may be April 15th, it may not be.
-
Yeah, that would be a good idea, the info wickedcurves sent me was really helpful, and others should see it!
-
You should ask the school how long the list is, because it probably varies quite a bit by school.

Yay, a thread about Pullman! I'm thinking about attending WSU, and have liked most of what I've heard about Pullman so far. I haven't visited yet, so I can't say much about it myself. However, I can point you towards some useful links I found about Pullman: Town Web Page: http://www.pullman-wa.gov/ Pullman Transit (local buses, free to WSU students): http://www.pullmantransit.com/ Pullman/Moscow Airport: http://www.pullman-wa.gov/airport/ On Campus Housing Information from WSU: http://www.livingat.wsu.edu/hdrl/future ... urApts.htm Off Campus Housing Information from WSU: http://offcampusliving.wsu.edu/Content/ ... 0sheet.pdf I've heard from a former WSU student that DABCO is a good rental company.

I have a lease on my current apartment through July 31st. The one school that has accepted me so far has told me that orientation starts August 17th. So, sometime in between those dates I'll move. I'm planning to pack up my stuff, send it by moving truck, and take a plane with my cats to my new location. It looks like some leases don't start until the 5th, which could be an issue, but with any luck I'll find an apartment with a lease that starts August 1st.

Probably a silly question but I've got to ask
kahlan_amnell replied to odc245's topic in Decisions, Decisions
You should ask how they handle travel funds. They may want to make the reservations for you. Or they may tell you to make the reservations and they will reimburse you. If that is the case, check if there is a limit on how much they will reimburse. Also, note that they may offer to let you stay with a current grad student instead of putting you up at a hotel. -
Has anyone heard from Rutgers lately? The last posted results were on the 25th and 26th of February. Someone had heard that all acceptances have gone out, but you'd think if that was the case one might think that they might get around to notifying wait listed and rejected applicants soon. Has anyone else heard from Temple? I've only seen two results posted for this year, one acceptance and one rejection, one of which was gotten by e-mailing to check status. I'd like to hear from my last three schools so I can concentrate more on finishing my MA thesis.

Yep, that is correct.

I think that economic history is a rather small area within history, and I don't think it is growing. I don't know about it's relative popularity in the US versus elsewhere.

For people traveling on planes with cats: your cat is probably not too big to fit in a carrier that fits under the seat. I'd check with the airline that the cat is allowed to be placed on a seat if you buy an extra seat. I somehow doubt that is allowed, as I've never seen it done. If the cat is too large to fit into a carrier that will find under the seat, then I'm afraid the only option may be to put the cat in cargo. As was pointed out, the cat would have to go under the seat for take off and landing, and if they won't fit, the carrier can't be on the seat for those times. So where would the carrier go then? For going onto the plane, the cat does not need to be able to stand up in the carrier. That regulation for pets having to be able to stand up and turn around in carriers is for pets going in cargo. They do not check how well pets being brought into the cabin fit in their carriers. So, unless the cat is horribly cramped in a standard sized soft carrier, they should be OK to bring on the plane with you and put under the seat. Do not sedate your cat for flying, as someone else mentioned it is dangerous. There are natural remedies that calm cats that you could use. Make resevations for traveling with your cat in advance. Airlines only allow a certain number of pets on each flight. You will have to let them know you are traveling with a pet and pay a fee. Also, you may need a certificate from your vet stating that your cat is healthy, though they almost never ask you to see it. For anyone traveling with pets, here is a chart of the fees different airlines charge for pets, which range from $69 to $175, with $100 being the most common fee: http://www.airfarewatchdog.com/AirfareW ... fault.aspx.

MA programs can be a good way to get started with grad school if you think that your stats are keeping you out of Ph.D. programs. Your professors probably advised you not to apply to MA programs, because most history MA programs are not funded, and if you change programs for your Ph.D. a number of your credits may not transfer, and it will take longer to get the Ph.D. Some schools don't accept any transfer credits for people with MAs. (I'm looking at you UC Irvine.)

could there be legal troubles here?

It's probably just a poorly worded letter, I wouldn't worry too much about possible legal implications. -
How Many Schools Have You Been Accepted To?
kahlan_amnell replied to BostonGrrl's topic in Waiting it Out
I've heard of some schools refunding your application fee if you withdraw. However, I wouldn't recommend withdrawing unless you already have other acceptances and are sure you wouldn't want to go to the school you're withdrawing your application from. I think it's best to see all your options before making a decision, unless there are extenuating circumstances. -
Only schools that are members of the council of graduate schools have to adhere to the April 15th date for funded offers. If they aren't a member, they can set any response date they like. You need to find out from each school when they want to hear, and ask for extensions from the ones that want to hear sooner if the dates don't seem to work. Many schools are quite willing to give extensions.

That too is somewhat less than reliable, at least with it's overall "walkablity" score. It rated two different addresses in the same town quite differently, despite the fact they were equally walkable. It said that the town was "car dependent" when I just entered the town name and state, but when I added a street number it said it was "somewhat walkable". Also, the distances listed to various things like supermarkets, bars, etc seemed to pick a random example from each category. I can honestly say I've never heard of some of the ones they selected for my town, and there are closer ones than the ones they listed. The "walkablity" of a town really depends on how far you're willing to walk. A town could be less walkable if it lacked sidewalks in places, like the area I live in now. I'd say the best way to find out if you need a car in an area is to see how far it is to the things you need, like grocery stores, and determine if you'd want to walk that far. Also, check for buses and see if they go where you want to go at useful times. You should also take weather into account. Will you want to walk the distance to campus if it's snowing, raining, below zero, or over a hundred? Are area you'd be walking lighted enough that you'd feel safe walking at night? If they aren't lighted, would you feel safe enough if you just had a flashlight or headlamp? Some of these things can't really be determined from a distance. My opinion is that you can walk just about anywhere, some places are just friendlier than others for walkers. I live in a place that most people say it's impossible to get by without a car. Yet I don't have one, and I do just fine.

Taboo topic: Go to PhD program for a year & then transfer??
kahlan_amnell replied to Rioga's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I agree. Well perhaps not never. If I went to a Ph.D. program for a year and found I was miserable and it wasn't at all what I had expected, then maybe. But planning to do so? I would never do it. -
I'm also waiting to hear from three schools.
-
STILLL havent heard from schools!
kahlan_amnell replied to lostandconfused's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm still waiting on three schools, and have heard back from seven. Yeah it is a bit late, but people still hear about acceptances in March and early April. Anything after April 15th and it's probably a rejection or wait list. -
You could still ask the schools that want to hear earlier for an extension though.
-
I don't know much about the IPED program in particular, but I did go to Fordham for undergrad. Are you talking about the Rose Hill or Lincoln Center campus? If it's the Rose Hill one, I could probably answer general questions about the school.

I agree. I put 1, but I'm still waiting to hear from three schools. -
I would only think it was a good thing if you had a job that gave you the summer off that you didn't want to give up, like a secondary school teaching job. Otherwise, it just seems like dragging the coursework out over a long time for no reason.
