  1. Galoup- does not hearing yet mean one is waitlisted? Asking for my bf, not myself.
  2. It was my second week of my MA. We were discussing Edgar Huntly, which I dislike but I digress. The week before we talked about Wieland and I barely said a word which is unlike me. I said something during the EH class and suddenly I felt like I fit:)
  3. To all those worried about having a writing sample of sufficient length: ask your professors to work with you. For example, one person here said a course they're taking requires 2 7 pg papers. I'd approach the professor, explain your graduate school goals and what you'd like to get out of the course. In my experience professors are willing to help you write the paper you need for the stage of your career as a student. Maybe he/she will work with you on one longer paper rather than 2 short.
  4. It's also worth noting that in a one year MA, you probably won't be able to apply to PhD programs during that year. If you did Georgetown you could apply in your second year.
  5. Fordham's best subfield is medieval so that's nothing to sneeze at! I'd probably choose Fordham. Money + a 1/1 is also a huge deal. You can't imagine how much work even teaching one class can be at times until you're doing it, so more than one while doing coursework/exams/diss is less than ideal.
  6. my bf will almost 100% be declining after today. he doesn't have funding though as i mentioned before. ms72-- are you going to attend?
  7. Hahaha no that's fine! Once I hear from him I'll write back in here about whether or not he thinks people are accepting
  8. Hey guys, my BF is in at the Georgetown MA. He will probably turn down his offer. He is waitlisted for funding though so if someone whose in does t have funding, the likelihood of waitlisters getting it is small :x. But there will be a spot opening up, probably
  9. oh PS Dagny- if you get a rejection via mail can you PM me what it says. My rejection was INCREDIBLY nice so I'm wondering if they all say the same thing... And I'm rooting for you to get an acceptance. Seems kind of promising. I checked mine again and it was just a link to this: Dear J (edited my name out) The Admissions Committee has now reviewed all the applications submitted for theEnglish PhD for Fall 2012 at Stony Brook University. Unfortunately, your application has not been selected for an offer of admission. There were many strong candidates for admission this year, which made decisions difficult and time-consuming for the Committee. Your application was very well presented, and our inability to offer admission reflects the intense competition for a limited number of openings. You are to be commended for your achievements so far. We encourage you to continue your studies and are confident you will find another graduate program to match your interests and excellent qualifications. We sincerely thank you for your interest in the English PhD and extend our best wishes for your future success.
  10. The online rejection was a link under a similar statement. Maybe the mail/email thing means acceptance?
  11. I agree. There's a prof in my department whose brand spankin' new who realllly cautions people against doing grad school. Like borderline hostile.
  12. I have to play the devil's advocate, to others and to myself. I see reasons for both. The reasons to attend UI-C are more obvious. But, the BU program will result in less debt from one year, am I correct? Or is UI-C cheaper even for two years? Less debt would be a perfectly fine reason to attend BU. I'm sure the MA education there would be great and I think I read that it's 4 classes per semester (my BF got the offer too...). However, doing a one year MA basically counts you out of next year's application season. When you have to put together an application in the fall you won't be ready with about a month of graduate coursework under your belt. That being said, I think even putting together an app in the second year of an MA program isn't the easiest thing to do. I know some people have had success here with it but I largely did not and neither did most of my cohort.
  13. Ah good luck! I don't think SB funds their MA's-- I have a friend there. But I hail from not too far away and it's a nice place!
  14. jfaulk-- i'd think you still have a shot at maryland. my bf was accepted there and their visiting day was last week-- he thinks a lot of the cohort may accept other offers so you may be on a second round waitlist that they may end up deferring to.
  15. anyone else get the online rejection? i'm sure it's a form but it seemed INCREDIBLY nice...
  16. still waiting over here but they aim for 4-5.
  17. I have a professor who went to Duke after she was originally outright rejected and they then changed their mind when their original acceptee for her field declined.
  18. My bf got accepted there via postal mail about a week ago. No word on funding though. I got accepted to their PhD two years back and they said they had no $ for me so it's not uncommon for them not to fund people. Good luck!
  19. Hm, I'd wait. I'm not doing anything but sitting on my waitlist. They'll definitely remember to contact you ASAP, and contacting them now won't really do much. They know you're interested and invested in attending there. Sit tight, I think it'll happen!
  20. On ratemyprof my undergraduate thesis advisor had a review that said "he looks like humpty dumpty... I wish he'd fall off the wall." reliable, I think not!
  21. Just want to encourage people to ask for feedback. I just got some from one of my schools. Tough to hear I made the final round of meetings but wasn't offered a spot, but got some good info nevertheless.
