  1. Hi, Zeb! It was really great meeting you. *secret handshake*
  2. Have you received the invite to our Facebook group? Dr. Clum will be sending you an email notification soon if you haven't. There are a lot of discussions going on about where to live, and from the looks of it, a significant number of people will be living closer to the city. Personally, I decided on graduate student housing in Hyde Park, but a lot of others have chosen elsewhere. It sounds like there are going to be carpools forming, so that certainly helps!
  3. Snarky Grad Cafers..... how long to put up with them? Ironically, you condemn snarkiness, and then you employ it in your own responses here.
  4. My projected move-in date is August 15th, so I'll have plenty of time to get acclimated. I'm excited!
  5. For those who are unusually particular when it comes to their writing utensils, let me introduce you to Jet Pens (www.jetpens.com). Feel free to browse a diverse selection of all pens imaginable. I have ordered quite a few from them with great success. Yay.
  6. I vote for School A because there's a smiley face in its description.
  7. Try not to worry! It's feasible that they could've evaluated the Mental Health applications before Children and Families. UIC is slow and bogged down; they don't have enough staff. They wouldn't even let me come pop in for a small visit or meeting with admissions this January/February. I had to withdraw my application because I accepted another school's offer. It was going to take forever to hear back from them. I understand where the worry is coming from, though. I was also watching people receive their decisions before me, and I couldn't help but think that it meant bad news. It was a happy ending after all!
  8. Well, since it sounds like you are familiar with the research process and the logical order and content of an article, I would just suggest to immerse yourself in articles from your field and then write literature reviews on them. Summarize the article in a lucid and cohesive manner. Look through your field's publication manual. Make sure you're comfortable with all the details involved with writing articles and read through the samples. I think my writing improved significantly as a research assistant because I was given so much literature to review.
  9. I'm very excited to be attending UChicago for the 2-year MA program. The primary reason for my choice is the people; I couldn't be more impressed by the faculty, their research, and the staff. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to learn from them and participate in research that I'm interested in. UChicago also provides a diverse and inter-disciplinary curriculum with ways to design your own program. They have so many great routes you could take that, all of a sudden, I'm having a difficult time deciding exactly what I want to do. It's a good problem to have, in a sense, but I guess I need to find some direction again. Lastly, so as not to make this too long, my visit to SSA really "sealed the deal" for me. Everyone I met was warm, welcoming, and very knowledgeable. The building has everything a student needs in one place. I just felt "right" with it. Ok. One more thing. I'm also looking forward to being part of the larger community at UChicago. The events, the speakers, etc. will be great supplements to my education and my own intellectual curiosity!
  10. Research databases are your friend. Once you find a relevant article, look at what the article itself cited. You will find many related topics in the references section.

I have that app on my iPhone. I love it!
  12. I visited in February and had a great experience! Everyone was welcoming, warm, and very knowledgeable. The weather was beautiful when I was there, too. Regarding transportation, students do not receive city-wide CTA passes, but we can ride a few buses around Hyde Park at no charge. Since I'm not from the area, I'm not familiar with all of our options for traveling to the city, so maybe someone can expand on that. Hope to see you in the fall!
  13. I feel for you. Honestly. And I know that you wish you could focus more on the excitement of attending grad school, but this break-up is probably overwhelming your thoughts and feelings. It's okay if you have to hold off on the excitement for a little while. You're experiencing a loss in your life right now, and it's not easy. The silver lining is this: you will feel better again. Right now it may not feel that way, but you should eventually find yourself thinking about it less. If you don't, and you feel stuck, don't hesitate to open up to someone about it, whether that's a friend, family member, or therapist. Sometimes it really helps to just vent. Now that you have more time and space, make yourself a priority. Do the things that you want to do. Put your energy into things that make you happy. I, too, broke up with my s/o, about a month ago. We just couldn't make it work, but I know it's for the best. I'm moving to Chicago and starting my own, new adventure, and I need this time to immerse myself in school and student life. I like to believe that certain things do happen for a reason.
  14. I spoke with a student from Jane Addams over email who is in the Community Health and Urban Development track and "very policy level focused." If you'd like, I can email her again and ask if I can give you her address. She was very helpful and gave me detailed answers to my questions even though I'm clinical! I don't know anyone in the administration concentration at U of C. You could always email admissions and ask for a student contact. Good luck with your decision!
  15. I had to estimate a move-in date on the graduate housing application, so I put 8/15. Looking at last year's calendar, classes didn't start until end of September, and orientation was around mid-September. I want time to get settled and perhaps find a flexible job, so I decided about a month to get acclimated would work. I can't wait any longer! What about you? Btw, those are some nice-looking apartments!
  16. Yeah, I did look at that. I should be good to go, so it'll just be a matter of getting it signed off at the doc. I was born in Chicago and have a lot of family there, but I've lived in Texas the longest. I'm back in Houston working right now after having graduated last year. Very excited for the move!! Are you a native?
  17. I started a thread in the Social Work forum for UChicago applicants and watched as they posted their acceptances. I lost almost all hope since I wasn't hearing anything, and I was feeling a bit embarrassed to be the one who had excitedly opened the thread. So, I had received my first acceptance to Loyola last Thursday, which was my second choice. I was very happy about that and pretty certain that I would be going there. On Friday, I checked my email on my phone (just a nonchalant, habitual check) as I got home from work and saw an application subject heading from Chicago. I was completely surprised because I wasn't expecting to hear from them for another week or two. My eyes skimmed the email frantically. The official letter was attached, but there was a mention of a scholarship embedded in the email somewhere. What! I opened up the letter and saw the most beautiful fifteen-letter word: Congratulations! My mom was on the phone as I was standing in the kitchen yelling, "OMG, OMG, I GOT IN!" She immediately hung up on the person to hug me. I then began running and jumping around the house for the next 20 minutes. Ok, probably more like 30 minutes. Over the last few days, I've had several moments of happy tears just thinking about how thankful I am to have this opportunity. The shock is lifting slowly, and it's all beginning to sink in. I'm going to my dream program!
  18. Haha - my mom said the same thing. "I TOLD YOU SO!"
  19. Yay, Zeb!! It's pretty cool to have the chance to talk to one of my classmates! Yes, I'll be mailing my intent to enroll tomorrow! On a separate note, I just applied for graduate student housing, but I think I'll be looking at other apartments in Hyde Park, too. I'm going to try to visit in July to check out my options. Do you know what you're doing on that front yet?
  20. Well, I went ahead and applied for graduate housing. I'm limited to the pet-friendly buildings since I'm bringing my kitty. There seem to be some nice ones, though, so we'll see how it turns out. I wish we didn't have to wait so long for our first quarter to begin!
  21. Hi, everyone! I'll be attending U of C this autumn quarter as well. I'm almost certain that I'll apply for graduate housing, but the one qualm I have is not being able to see the place before accepting. They only allow for one week to decide when you receive your assignment. :-\ I'm thinking about looking at other apartments, too. It's just that, ideally, I'd like to live around other graduate students since I won't know anyone. Other perks: most, if not all, utilities included and relatively simple application process.
