Asking my boss to write me a LOR
child of 2 replied to child of 2's topic in Letters of Recommendation
Thanks for responding. Well... I still have a couple of months to casually bring this up to him. In the mean time, it would be good to get feedback from someone who has been in a similar situation. -
A mistake that I made last year was not explaining certain things that I should have in my SOP. In my essays, I focused 90% of my words on research. In reality, I was pretty mediocre in one of my research positions, largely because I was juggling 3 part time jobs (two of them research) along with school. There a lot of people out there who can do that successfully, but I'm not one of them. If there's a good reason why your GPA isn't higher, I would address that, briefly.
-
But I'm wondering if there's a way around that cutoff. If I were to get the attention of a professor or something, maybe I'll get past the firewall... Who knows.
-
I would take a look at the results section. Some say GPA's and GRE's don't matter, but the stats say otherwise. People have told me that as long as I'm above a 3.5, with a good Q, and a V above 150, I should be all set. But these top schools work very hard to make sure their incoming grad students have excellent stats, so that they can put something like "our incoming class have an avg GPA of 3.9" or some stupid shit like that. I would mind the cutoff a little more than just an afterthought.

I'll be a 2nd rounder in 2014. Right now, I'm going to be a full time engineer for a year or so. But before November rolls around, I'm going to have to get my LOR's. My boss thinks I'm doing a good job, and probably wants me to stay with the company, especially considering we're already short on manpower. But I see this position as a stepping stone to an underpaid and overstressed placement as a grad student. I like research. Anyone have experience with this? To my knowledge, my boss don't know about my grad school ambitions. My boss' boss seems pretty deliberate in making sure that I'm happy here, and that I don't have any other plans. He was the one who pulled the strings to get me from a co-op to a full time in the first place. I feel a little bad..

Why do you even want to go to grad school anyway?
child of 2 replied to qed67's topic in Waiting it Out
From what I remember, I didn't mention anything about my future career other than that I wanted to work in R&D. I spent 80% of the essay talking about my research and teaching experience. I only had positive feedback from the professors who read it for me. I was told to emphasize my research experience... I mean people can talk all they want about making the world a better place, but the cold hard truth (for chemical engineers anyway) is that one way or another, people end up doing process design, or something completely unrelated to their PhD thesis. It seems the real exciting stuff only happen at research universities and national labs. Outside, in the private sector, it's all about the bottomline... and not getting sued. Ridiculous... -
Which school or admissions habit got you your nerves?

you signed a lease without looking at the neighborhood first? I did that, and now I regret it deeply. -

well... more specifically, a scientist that helps address the world's sustainbility issues such as petro chemical deriveratives, mostly polymers, which typically require high energy demands, processes that produce a lot of wastes, and when turned into a product, gets a 1 way ticket to a landfill, often behind the curtains, in a third world country. Have to hand it to Apple for that one, they come up with new shit every year, and people flock to them. There are currently research involving biodegradable (recyclable) polymers that could potentially be not only a greener, but cheaper alternative to conventional plastics, electronics, etc. Polymers is also a big player in fuel cells and photovoltaics, which are currently already optimized; they're just trying to make it cheaper than fossil fuel (good luck with that one ). shit, maybe I should've put that into my SOP.... -

you would think that paying $60-120 for a stupid application entitles you the courtesy of prompt email responses and constructive feedback after the process is over. I mean for f*k's sake the NSF fellowship, which has a free application, sends back comments to those that make the first cut. Another reason why I hate the school administrations' guts. My hard earned money is just another drop in the bucket for their BS. -
I took a co-op offer after graduation because I thought I'd get into a PhD program. But I got my ass handed to me instead, and have to drift down to plan B, which is no bueno. I've emailed to ask for advice/feedback, but pretty much got either no replies or the runaround. I was thinking of sending another round about getting some application feedback. I'm also looking for a research related job in SF, my dream city, work there for a year or so. Fingers crossed. how do you not give up? Realize that the glass is half full, plain and simple.

I posted something like this on the grad school forum in talk.collegeconfidential, but some bitch administrator deleted it before anyone could respond. now that's diligent fast work... anyway, I'm just looking for information on what people changed in their applications. I know mine's probably going to be stronger due to the job experience I'm having now, and two more publications that's been delayed for like 3 months now. But in terms of references, GRE, GPA, essays, any info would be appreciated.

marine bio might be a different situation. The national lab for which I'm still technically an employee sends out newsletters. One of those letters from the Lab Director indicate that our DOE has seen a 5.1% increase from 2013. "Fusion Energy Sciences" had 13.6% increase. etc. I'm assuming it depends on what your field is.

at last.. an acceptance from UC Davis. Applied to 5 PhD programs, and ended up getting into a M Eng program. Didn't get the chocolate cake, but I'll take the hershey's kiss... I was at work today, and the email sprung up to check my application status. I was like shit, that probably means I'm rejected. But no, it's technically an acceptance. ok whatever, time to figure out if I'm going, and if so, who the hell's going to pay for it.

fyi. I don't know who came up with the number 54B. But this articles talks about the actual federal budget on federal R&D funding, which includes an increase in funding for NSF, Dep of Energy, while the Defense budget gets slashed. http://cen.acs.org/articles/91/i15/Obama-Pledges-Support-RD.htmlhttp://cen.acs.org/articles/91/i15/Obama-Pledges-Support-RD.html

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
child of 2 replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
people are nice in Texas, but there is some racial tension, imo. At work, all the white people hang out with each other. I call it the white boy's club. But Ive heard austin is nice. -
no offers thus far.....

so there's a $54 Billion cut across the board for NSF, NIH etc. But a $100 Million initiative to the NSF, NIH etc to map the brain... Am I missing something here???
