Annoying writing habits...

Mostly i hear it from pendants who don't know the difference between English and Latin grammar re preposition placement, the type who make a conscious effort to let you know they're better than you because they speak betterer. DFW had an interesting review of Brian Garner's usage dictionary where he talks a good deal about usage/grammar. -

Also: motherfuckers who pronounce 'wh' words like 'hw'. -

people who make a point of not ending sentences with a preposition, imply/infer confusion, not using the subjunctive. also, not being okay with me saying y'all. other languages have second person plural forms, it's clearer than saying only 'you', and it's more politically correct than the yankee 'you guys'. -
Quality of undergrad?

U of R is still above George Mason. Plus, my concentration wasn't even literature so I'm pretty lacking when it comes to foundation. -

here's how i see it: each school has maybe 300 applicants for 6-18 spaces. that means, on average, my chance of getting into each school is about 4%. applying to 10 schools, that gives me a 40% chance. basic math. -

i'll have an answer to that in a few months. my school wasn't small, but isn't rank and is (or was) kind of known as a commuter school. also, i don't think i was at the top of my class, but i did get deparmental honors. maybe the few years off and sop/writing sample will do something for me... -

i think i'm worried most about some material (GRE scores, transcripts, etc.) not making it to the program. some have taken a while to show up, and others, it turns out, required two instead of one, or two the grad school and the department without ever clearly saying so on the site. -
have it for ohio state and carnegie. really i wish all schools went through one thing like this. too much to remember.

SOP Word Limits...
user_name replied to xfgdfrmgpo332's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
i haven't been paying too much attention to these....most schools i'm applying to have said about 500 and i've gone up to 550ish. some schools have word counters on the application and i really had to cut it down with that. i just don't see how 50 or so words is going to bother someone that much. -
Rutgers Writing Sample

a few require transcripts/gres once you are accepted, but only unofficial ones before. it'd save the poor students/minimum wage workers $30+ per application, and i really doubt it's common for people to forge their scanned copies knowing the university will ask for the real ones once accepted. -

Predictor of Admit Chances?

Will I get into Brown? My sources say no. Will I get into Madison? Definitely. Will I get into Ohio State? Maybe. Will I get into WashU? No way. Will I get into Penn State? Definitely. Will I get into Oregon? No way. Will I get into UW-Milwaukee? Yes Will I get into into Delaware? Outlook not so good. Will I get into Carnegie Mellon? Yes. For the Phd program? Definitely. Will I get into Rutgers? Outlook not so good. I guess this contraption really takes into account program fit and who's on the adcom much more than just ranking... -
checking app status and an LOR for a Dec 5th deadline has still not been posted. i'm a few years out of school, plan on emailing the school i'm applying to and calling my professor on monday, but am starting to worry about it...
