Fiona Thunderpaws, I know EXACTLY what you mean. I feel like when I'm writing emails to the coordinators at my waitlisted program, my Modern English suddenly appears to me as Middle English.

When might I knoweth mine statous?

So I haven't really posted here before but had been haunting this forum during the pre-SSHRC notice anxiety/obsession since April, and thought I would try posting as it was requested that applicants share their stats. I just got my letter yesterday in Winnipeg, and have been awarded a SSHRC. I applied through my university, have a 4.244/4.5 GPA, have had four research positions and four marking positions, had only received about seven scholarships (most of which were not very large and not very impressive, although they were/are totally appreciated), and hadn't had any presentations or attended any conferences during the time of my application, and still have no publications. While my letters of reference were sealed, I believe they were strong, as I chose the professors who I had worked for in various capacities and/or professors who had vocalized their support and opinion of my work.

Congratulations to all who have won, and best of luck to those who are still waiting, on the waitlist, or applying (again) next year!

In order to avoid Users thinking "why was it mailed on the 17th and I still haven't heard anything". The date on the letter is May 17th, however, the letters were post-marked on May 24th.

At this point, I would not expect any news until June 1st (Next Friday). I have said it here previously, but based on their twitter feed it seems that the results usually come out on Friday's. In addition, as someone on here mentioned, a grad office stated that they were told by SSHRC that results would not be sent out until May 31st at the earliest.

Compoe, you have captured my feelings exactly. Every time I complain about the wait, I feel guilty because of what I might end up receiving from them, but I'm starting to get extremely impatient.

"Results coming via Canada Post. Good luck!"

If the above does not mean that they are going out this week, then what's the point of posting that paltry line on Twitter? We all know--bitterly, I might add--that the results are eventually coming via Canada Post.

Canadian schools whose English departments rank in the global top 50 include the University of Toronto (#7), McGill (#12) and UBC (#13). The University of Alberta is also a great school overall, and although its English department doesn't rank among the top 50, I know people who absolutely love it there. (Edmonton has nasty weather, though.)

U of T is the only Canadian school I've heard of that does not fund its MA students. Still, American students head there in decent numbers, because all the best Canadian schools are public and relatively affordable. Also, in Canada an MA is a basic prerequisite for a PhD, and US adcoms are aware of this cultural difference.

As a sidenote, I find it strange that when people research rankings by department or field, they often only look at US-published reports that omit international schools.

    *typical Canadian protesting US-centricity*
*typical Canadian who thinks education should be publicly funded*

But when, specifically, in May? The 2nd? The 4th, but only after 2:51PM? Are they waiting for a specific star formation to be seen before knowing that it is the Right Time to release the results?

I'mma email them every three hours to ask.

Welcome to the SSHRC master's gang, Aion!

Every time this topic is bumped, my heart skips a beat and I immediately assume someone has heard news from SSHRC. Good things come to those who wait.

UTA has an unranked waitlist, and maybe some of Adam's schools have a similar setup. It makes sense for UTA since they encourage interdisciplinary research among their cohort. Unfortunately, UTA also has a closed-lips policy when it comes to responding to queries from both waitlisted people and their acceptees. I guess it made sense to a point, but this late in the game, it does seem weird. If I had other offers I'd need to know how likely my chances of admission were! I emailed them almost a week ago asking when I might hear back, but there was no reply. I'm assuming it's because they're making a fellowship just for me. It's called "Thunderpaws--the Coolest Cat on Campus" and it's a one shot deal. Yep. That's what they're doing all right.

I have been lucky enough to know it's "Bart" since undergrad, but many people still say "Barth" or "Barthe-s" around me and it always makes me second guess myself.

I remember the time I was in a class sophomore year and pronounced "Flaubert" as "Flaw-Burt". I used to also always mix up "infer" and "imply." Oh the shame!!

On the subject of dropping and adding r's, I once had a misogynist boss when I worked retail in Boston. He was from Brockton, MA and he said sentences like this:

"That chick gettin' out of the cah ain't got no brar on!"

Being waitlisted is an amazing accomplishment. Think about it - there's only room for about 20% of applicants and roughly another 10% [at UofT] are waitlisted. You made the top 30% of candidates this year. The waitlist does move [how much is debatable] but even if you don't get in off the waitlst, isn't is a pretty large accomplishment just to be on it?

That was the McGill co-ordinator I spoke to with regards to the committee's final decision--made on Feb 9th. I think we can expect news from McGill this week.
