I've got a 2 bed 2 bath condo i'll be moving out of over the summer. $600 a month, $600 deposit. It's on the southwest corner of campus, although it isn't officially on campus. Several bus routes stop right in front of the complex. Also, the place is just a few blocks from tons of stores (best buy, target, walmart), restaurants, and grocery stores.

How many times a minute do you refresh your email?

I keep my email open in its own tab, and the number of unread emails is listed right there on the tab. So no refreshing is necessary. -
Who here has applied... THREE times?
We regret to inform you replied to cokohlik's topic in Waiting it Out
this is also my fourth time: 1st time: i applied to 1 unfunded masters program and i attended it and completed the program. 2nd time: i applied to 2 PhD programs in a related field. (only applying to 2 was stupid) I was rejected by both. 3rd time: the year after that i applied to 10 PhD programs and was accepted to 2 - only 1 of which was funded. I attended the funded one and i am currently wrapping up the masters portion of it with the intention of switching fields. 4th time: PRESENT. I am applying to 5 programs in a different field from my previous 2 masters, but both of these masters certainly have relevance. Also this particular field is really what i've wanted to do with my life all along - ever since i was a little kid. The situations just didn't present themselves earlier in my academic career - or i was an immature idiot for not pushing myself in this direction all along. live and learn. -
Oh man, this is every applicant's worst nightmare. I'm so sorry it happened to you. If you have no chance of being accepted at this point you should call them up and ask for a refund on your application, since it was entirely their fault.

Dear future subordinate, I demand my acceptance and $30k fellowship be put in writing. You have 24 hours to comply. Sincerely, Future head of your department -
I think it's safe to say that LOTS of programs will make offers to at least a few people who were initially waitlisted simply because it is very unlikely that every single applicant who is given a "first round" offer will always accept the offer.

I will get accepted. I will get accepted. I will get accepted.

1. This doesn't apply to canadian schools, since the april 15th deadline is an american deadline. 2. There's definitely still some acceptance slots out there at this point since people who have multiple offers will be making decisions very soon and freeing up all of their other acceptances for other people to have.

Do you get any exercise? If not, you should start. Exercising is a great outlet for stress and anxiety. -
Is this normal or is it just me

If they respond and strike up a conversation at this point in time, then it's more likely a positive thing, but still far from a guarantee. Some professors are more talkative and friendly than others, so it's hard to tell for sure. If they don't respond then I could imagine 2 reasons: 1. they're too busy or 2. they looked at your app and know you probably won't be accepted so they won't waste their time. At this stage, if you are just now trying to contact professors for the first time, it might be a little too late to have an affect on the outcome of your application (for american schools at least). I've heard of students contacting professors as early as the summer before they apply. I tried contacting people between october and december and I got back a couple of responses, but a lot more didn't respond. For me, one person who responded back wrote me a very positive email in january and made it sound like i'd be a good fit for the program, but then i was rejected about 6 weeks later. Another person from another school also sent back a very positive email back in october and i was eventually accepted to that program in february. I got back another positive response from another program but haven't heard anything. And for two other programs nobody replied back to me. -
The movie is called Downfall, and IT IS on netflix IW. In fact, i just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago. It's pretty interesting.

Paying for a Master's
We regret to inform you replied to beyourownlight's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I took out about $60k for my first masters. Honestly, it was a pretty big mistake, and the reason i say that is because by the time i had finished the degree I realized it wasn't the field for me. So now i'm going to be paying for this mistake financially for the next 20 years. HOWEVER, earning this degree did allow me to do some travelling and it probably helped me get accepted to my current graduate program(s). Also, it will provide me with a backup plan if my current plans don't pan out. So it wasn't entirely a waste. Honestly though, i would only recommend taking on the debt if you are absolutely, positively sure this is a field you love and will stay with through thick and thin.- 20 replies

When i applied for my current masters that i am wrapping up at the moment I was rejected by 8 out of 10 schools. It was the very last school to respond that gave me my only funded offer! As i recall, I don't think that happened until mid april either. Hang in there!

... and has anybody gotten positive results after multiple emails? I emailed one of my programs a few weeks ago and i got a response saying i should hear something by the end of last week and that the holdup was the department still didn't know what its funding situation was at the moment. I'm tempted to email again, but i don't want to come off as annoying.
-
I would guess that your application is being considered but that others have already been made offers, so you're just gonna have to wait. Maybe it's an issue of the department finalizing their funding and seeing just how many more people they can admit, or maybe "hold" just means waitlisted.
