didn't think this one through, did ya?

finding out the stats of students accepted into the programs you are interested in is obviously more helpful in estimating your own chances compared to discussing imaginary cutoff stats with other current applicants - people who are potentially just as clueless as yourself. that's just a waste of time.

posts like this make me want to throw up.

hey guys! look at me, i'm amazing in everything! do i stand a chance at these great schools?

also, it would make more sense to post this in a forum of already accepted students. that way, some students who got into those schools could tell you about their application numbers. honestly, what could students in the same stage of the game as you have to add to this? none of us have been accepted yet, if we're posting on this particular board.

We regret to inform you got a reaction from DarlingNikki in Who here has applied... THREE times?
this is also my fourth time:

1st time: i applied to 1 unfunded masters program and i attended it and completed the program.
2nd time: i applied to 2 PhD programs in a related field. (only applying to 2 was stupid) I was rejected by both.
3rd time: the year after that i applied to 10 PhD programs and was accepted to 2 - only 1 of which was funded. I attended the funded one and i am currently wrapping up the masters portion of it with the intention of switching fields.
4th time: PRESENT. I am applying to 5 programs in a different field from my previous 2 masters, but both of these masters certainly have relevance. Also this particular field is really what i've wanted to do with my life all along - ever since i was a little kid. The situations just didn't present themselves earlier in my academic career - or i was an immature idiot for not pushing myself in this direction all along.

    live and learn.

Also, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to post a "what are my chances?" thread in the "officially grads" forum of newly accepted grad students. That way they can tell you their stats and then you can compare.

Asking what your chances are in the "applications" forum - among people in the very same boat as you wondering the exact same thing about their own stats - isn't going to help anybody since nobody has any real answers.

I definitely would NOT do this.

Just move on. Try your best to do a better job next time. Focusing on the bad really just makes you seem weak and uncertain. Being a teacher is like being the captain of a ship - You should always give the impression that you know what you're doing even when you don't.

Getting a lawyer and trying to take some sort of legal action would probably do a lot more harm than good. You'd most likely burn a lot of bridges. And if word of that got out to other programs that you were to apply to in the future, that would be a huge red flag against you.

Try to do your best to politely resolve the situation in as non-confrontational of a manner as possible. If it doesn't get you anywhere then you've got to just let it go, as much as it hurts.

Why do some people continue to post on this forum, for what in some cases seems to be years, after the grad admission process? Do they not access to other graduate students / advisors to talk to in real life about their graduate school issues? It just seems a bit pathetic to me.

I had a round of all rejections a few years back. It's a pretty miserable experience, but you can learn from your mistakes and you can take this extra year to improve your apps for next time:

    1. Apply to more safety schools next time.
    2. Retake the GRE.
    3. Rewrite your SOP.
    4. Try to start up a dialogue with more professors at the schools you are applying to.
    5. In the mean time try to get a job in the field.

We regret to inform you got a reaction from hungry in Paying for a Master's
I took out about $60k for my first masters. Honestly, it was a pretty big mistake, and the reason i say that is because by the time i had finished the degree I realized it wasn't the field for me. So now i'm going to be paying for this mistake financially for the next 20 years.

HOWEVER, earning this degree did allow me to do some travelling and it probably helped me get accepted to my current graduate program(s). Also, it will provide me with a backup plan if my current plans don't pan out. So it wasn't entirely a waste.

Honestly though, i would only recommend taking on the debt if you are absolutely, positively sure this is a field you love and will stay with through thick and thin.
