  9. Anyone else got a similar experience? The program is quite decent, engineering PhD, not famous but in the top 20% (according to NRC 2010 rankings). Frankly did not expect to even get admitted at all. Or it could be because that I'm pursuing an outlandish field (remote sensing)?
  10. Yeah, I mean, to each his own! We can't ALL be white-collar rats running the corporate rodent-race.
  11. AMEN to that! What I told my parents was, I have to go to grad school to prepare for my dream job (doing research) by getting a MS/PhD, therefore I am actually PREPARING for the real world.

  13. Hi eesj, I realize this has been a super-dead thread, which is my fault because I started working after sending in my apps, stuff happened, and I basically ended up being away from this forum for a long time. I have already been accepted to the CU Boulder PhD program for Fall 2012, with generous funding, thank God, haha. The prof I'm interested in working with over there is doing research in atmospheric remote sensing, like measuring temperature and wind conditions. Yeah one of the profs at my UG institution did mention Caltech, but I did not apply as I did not think I stood a chance of getting in. Hopefully there might be a chance to work with them in the future. What are you studying? Anything related to radar/remote sensing?

OK, I know which post you are replying to, thanks for the providing the context. Thanks a lot for your helpful reply! I'm from Southeast Asia, and this will be my first time in the US, so am both stoked and pretty nervous at the same time. I don't mind ugly industrial-looking buildings, as I used to live in a city with drab government flats everywhere.. as long as it's safe and cheap. Speaking of safety, is the easy availability of marijuana a problem? Because I remember one of the earlier posters mentioning that Boulder was relatively crime-free, and where I come from, drug use is viewed very seriously (mandatory death penalty for possession). So I have always associated drug use with serious crime, and am wondering how safe Boulder actually is. Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but I really don't know that much about the US besides what I've seen from television and the Internet, haha. (Feel free to PM me)

  18. Hi grlu0701, I don't know about your department, but in my admission email, the DGS said that the financial aid package offered to me (TA-ship + fellowship) was offered to "less than 1%" of applicants. I don't know about what the rate is like for other forms of financial aid though, other posters can help here maybe? Hope this helps.

Hi stell4. What is your main reason for avoiding dorms and campus housing? Is it because they are expensive? Or is staying there less conducive to studying than staying elsewhere?
  20. Hi, I've been admitted to the Electrical Engineering PhD program. Am from Southeast Asia.

Anyone from Southeast Asia got admitted here for engineering PhD? (any course)
  22. Hi everyone, Anyone else got admitted to the PhD program? From Southeast Asia.
  23. Hi everyone, saw some posters doing this in the humanities fora and thought, hey, why should they have all the fun? Just a brief intro would be good, for us applicants to get to know each other, and share all those worries and anxieties that are bound to be there right now. Tell us where you're from, which programs you'll be applying to, areas of interest, and anything else you care to share! To kick off, I'm from Asia, and will be applying to programs in radar and remote sensing in the US.
