Ugh -- I do sort of wonder how many programs snubbed me because of my UMass Boston undergrad. Yes, I went to UMass Boston -- the university with one of the lowest graduation rates in the entire country.

That's exactly how I felt when I got into CUNY Grad Center. I honestly thought the Buffalo had made a mistake or something. -

WOO! Way to go SP! So, knee-jerk reaction: Amherst or BU? -
I thought I had ideas about this process when I started. And then going forth. And now I don't get it all. Not one bit.
-
It also shows the weirdness/fit-focus aspect of this process, since I am waitlisted at Rutgers, but probably not in at Tufts. Huh. Congrats Hedgerows! This is great news!!
-
Well, doesn't look so good for me. No call. Maybe it's a waitlist. I really like Tufts, but I have to say I've already been accepted to top choices I would take over it. The biggest draw there is queer/gender expertise and Somerville/Medford.

Just waiting for my call.

I baked them all cookies. That's not weird, is it? -

I've heard of Duke paying for relocation costs. -

Schools providing moving and travel costs are not uncommon, so you should definitely inquire. The worst they could do is say no. Or rescind their offer of admission, along with a nasty e-mail scorning you for even asking. -
Sorry cquin.

Congrats on Fordham! Who needs shitty BU, anyway? (No offense eventual acceptees) -

My only suspicion is that BU really wants to mold and personalize their candidates. That's how I've had this kind of thing explained to me before. I hear that Univ. of Michigan also works this way. To be honest, I think it's pretty dumb. Pick the best candidate period. UGH Grunty! No! No! This sucks. Well, take a little time to mourn. If/when you need a peer reader for your SoP or writing sample, you know all your friends on GC will be more than happy to help. 2013 will be your year. I'm sure of it! BTW, go seafoam go! -

Positive thinking, SP (although, a fat lot of good it did me in this scenario!). -

In every respect except for funding and teaching load, which is where Rutgers has a distinct edge. CUNY has the slight edge on actual program fit. -

Given my remaining places I'm waiting on and what I have, things are really starting to clear up. Starting to think it'll be Rutgers or CUNY. All in all, there's no way I could've pictured a better scenario. -

It's weird how nonchalant most of us are about not getting this one. Granted, we both have acceptances in hand. But to be honest, this was never one of my top choices. I'm trying to remember why I applied in the first place. Should've sent an app to UNC Chapel Hill or Columbia instead. -

Okay, now I'm rejected. My heart isn't exactly broken about this one. More like an, "Aw damn. Oh well." Good luck to everyone else! -

I was just reading The Education of Henry Adams and there's this part in it where he's complaining about having to take a professorship at Harvard College, when he'd rather stay close to Washington politics. He just finds that kind of education "detestable," and thinks there's nothing worth being learned at Harvard. It is poor timing for me to be reading this right now. -

Someone posted this on the results board and I had been worried about the same thing: "I found out too late that BU typically looks unfavorably on those with a master's degree. Had I known that, I probably wouldn't have applied." Tough to think I'll get in considering that weirdness, but still no e-mail. It appears I might survive through at least day one of rejections. -

Sorry to hear that homeric voice. I've still got nothing, but it looks like historically they stagger rejections over the course of like a week, sometimes two. Ughhhh... -

That's good. The ad-comm chair said he would be keeping in touch via phone. Thanks for letting me know. Did you get in? Where did you end up going? -

*waves hand* You do not want to send me a rejection e-mail. You want to give me a $27,000/yr fellowship, plus healthcare and no teaching.
