  1. Looks like tuition for int students is $13k annually (+ $2k in fees and insurance) http://www.mcgill.ca...s/graduate-fees I was accepted to the same program and as a Canadian I`ll get $22k in year one and $16k after so it looks like a similar deal. Montreal has the cheapest rent of any city I've ever lived in, so you can stretch the money relatively far i'd think Phd-1 track includes the MA though, which explains why your offer includes year 5 rather than the 4 year program for phd-2. Are you thinking about accepting? PM me if you want to chat about research interests, Montreal, etc.
  2. Got rejection from CUNY today - anyone have any insight into the CUNY process? They seem to have cut first, then accepted bunch and now a bunch of waitlists/rejects - wondering if this means I made the first cut at least. I already have a good offer to stay in Canada probably wouldn't have gone anyways, but would like to know where I stand in my US applications. Looks like I'm rejected from everywhere in the US apart from BU, assuming silence from Stanford, Columbia, NYU (Soc), and Chicago means I'm out - but why couldn't they just tell me already?
  3. love to see KRS-One drop some knowledge - best thing I've found on this forum
  4. re CUNY, from assistant program officer: The cultural subfield is the largest in our program and receives the majority of applications, which means that the decisions for cultural anthropology require a longer timeframe. My understanding is that the admissions committee for cultural anthropology will report a first round of decisions by the end of the week; these are reported to the admissions office, which then sends out notices to applicants as soon as possible. Because my office is not usually involved in these communications directly, we do not necessarily know when notices have gone out - so I’m afraid that I can’t be more specific, but I hope this general explanation of the process is helpful.
  5. well, it probably inhibits the breadth of knowledge at the very least.
  6. I applied for sociology and am interested in this as well - what is McGill's reputation relative to CUNY or Boston U?
  7. well, my gf definitely doesn't think I should be checking the site so much, but really I'd be stressing out just as much in the dark without it. At least I have some ideas about schools that have probably already rejectged me but not notified, so I can develop my plans a bit further. That said, I wish I had found this site earlier - its most helpful for those who are planning ahead.
  8. congrats splitends! you totally deserve all those acceptances and have a great topic. good luck!
  9. Didn't realize any decisions had been made, on account of the lack of any postings on the results page
  10. So I suppose all accepts and waitlists have probably gone out by now?
  11. Thanks for the info and congratulations on the great programs you got into!
  12. If any of the CUNY cultural anth acceptances are around, did you interview for them before being accepted?
  13. Ya, I'm thinking with a couple NYU waitlists sent out that I'm probably out of the running there already....
  14. congratulations! those of us who weren't accepted would like to hear a little bit about your profile to help tell us if we have a shot in the future, if you don't mind.
  15. wierd how there's only been the one Stanford interview request and no other acceptances/rejections posted. If the poster of those results is here, what field did you get the inteview in and did it seem like the interview was a part of the normal proces? Cause they don't seem to have done interviews in previous years.
  16. Congrats on the interview! are you the Bio Anth interview on the results page?
  17. Thanks for the link Social Groovements, that's amazing. Especially that imposter syndrome 'is commonly associated with academics and is widely found among graduate students' . I definitely had to check my acceptance email several times to makes sure that I was actually admitted and that they hadn't gotten my file mixed up with another I'm so happy and relieved to get an acceptance after my first two rejections, and now it makes me think theres a chance I might be able to choose between programs and funding packages!
  18. My approach to having inter-department interests was to look at each individual department and find where I would fit in best. I made reference to some informal study of anthropology in my SOPs, but if you can concretely demonstrate interest in the new discipline it would help and give you something to talk about in your statement. Still waiting to see if I can get into an Anth PhD with my Soc masters.....the Canadian schools (and UC Boulder) appeared stricter about needing to have a Anth MA to go into a PhD there.
  19. I'm Canadian, but did a Sociology MSc in the UK before applying for North American grad school. I'd say you're best off trying to get a funded MA or get into a funded PhD in the US, rather than going into debt. Although for me the UK tuition was a lot more expensive than it would have been in Canada. Also, I found that a 1 year masters program wasn't really enough to develop the research and relationships with profs that will get you the best reference letters, but I suppose if you really work hard at that it might work out better for you. If LSE is one of the schools you're looking at, you can PM me about that school in particular. Still waiting to see how good my Masters seems to US grad committees.....
  20. Ya, I've only seen only interview request for Stanford on the results page, does the poster above have any additional info?
  21. Was a bit worried about this, but if you look at the results page, the only 2 acceptances for PhDs in 2011 were on Feb 21st, and then rejections are at the end of March, presumably so they can decide whether to offer you the MA program. Definitely don't want to hold out on a longshot like Columbia, but hey, I'm getting my acceptance to Stanford next week, right? gl everyone
  22. I applied for CUNY anthro and they've done rejections first as well. Judging from last year they do rejections and then acceptances/waitlists a couple weeks later, so I'm hoping that silence means I've made the first round of cuts.
  23. hmmm....looks like there are a few CUNY rejections out today, haven't seen any acceptances yet so I'm deluding myself to believe I'[ve mad the first cut at least
  24. Mailbox- great idea. Have you checked your `spam`folder recently
  25. Another Princeton accept on results - how am I supposed to get any work done while compulsively refreshing email and gradcafe?
