I read Go Tell it On The Mountain, I loved it. I have heard of Giovanni's Room but never read it pass the little bit I had to for my class. I never heard of If Beale Street Could Talk. I will check it out. I see what it is about. What would I do without all of this help!

Well I would't know that but making fun of my lack of knowledge is cool

I think I want to try to read classic books. Baldwin, Hemingway, possibly Poe. I didn't want to get specific because I only know of the "famous" authors and I didn't want to miss the chance of reading something by someone I haven't heard of before or put out a specific genre when I am open to all of you giving me something good to read. But anything older will do. Not super Moby Dick old. (very hard to get through. Though some people I know can) But, I am not going to shun exactly something from that era. Sorry for being so indecisive. Geez... this is why I am here for help

Hi everyone, I am not a English, Literature, Rhetoric person but... I need something to read. I have no taste in books and I really want to brighten my horizons on what I should read. Old books, new books. Whatever it is I would really love it if someone could help. But nothing scary!!! The only book I can vivdly remember reading was the Giver. I need something to keep me reading while I wait for decisions to come later this month and early March. Thanks

What to wear for visit to Midwest school?
bellefast replied to txelizabeth's topic in Decisions, Decisions
wear something warm. Pants, sweater, etc. it is cold here! -
1. Be proficient in my target language for graduate school (no one can be fluent unless you are a native speaker! Some people will argue with me on that but... ) 2. Be proficient in another language French (i did in high school and still love...no time right now ) and an African Language 3. Open a language school for English speakers learning my target language and help them learn the language better than schools can teach them 4. Be an academic that changes the standard idea of East Asian Languages and the model of teaching it in general 5. Write a language textbook that people actually understand 6. Expand the field I am in to make it more popular ...I would like to sign up for that revolution please

Agreed. I got rejected from only one school so far and it upset me a little, but they gotta do what they gotta do and so do I. I keep it moving and wait for the next. Thick skin is not something that justs happens, it will take some time to learn to be composed in those situations. All I need is one school to let me in (hopefully many won't know until later this month early march) and I will show them why I am a great choice for their school up front. Another thing, some girl was talking about how she has all these choices and feels bad because she is "taking" people's slots. She was blowing hot air out her a**. I was so upset that people like to rub their success in someones faces and try to mask it as being concerned. She is one of those "romantics" of academia. All people want me...blah blah blah. I think that is the worst part of waiting is hearing people act like they know it all when they got in somewhere. People like that make me sick.

I think i should be in the Guniness World records for the most refreshes in an email

I think that is a good start and you should try to apply to both PhD and M.A programs. I don't think it will be a waste. I think it is worth trying than to get older and think shoulda coulda woulda been different if only I did this... Good luck and I wish you the best!

I see. Well that clears things up. I am not sure if that is nice to think it is false hope. I see it as wishful thinking. Hell if you don't have that, sometimes things get really dark for people.

That is not true for all people. My programs don't inform me until later this month early March.

AHHHHHHH. Thanks for listening. I really need to hear something... I am ranging through so many emotions. One day I am then I am then I am and most of all I am but I will keep the faith.

Does taking graduate classes beforehand help with admissions?
bellefast replied to Normal's topic in Applications
My boyfriend did it and got As for them. I think it helped him. He is 4 for 8 right now for schools he got accepted to and I think it is important cause he didn't do well on the GREs not even average and he decided to work on what he could. So he took classes to show that he is quite able to do well in their schools. I took classes too. However, I cannot say it worked for me yet, still got weeks to go for my acceptances -
List of things to do instead of checking admit status

Re watch all the shows I like Mad Men curb your enthusiasm The Walking Dead Breaking Bad Shameless (US) -
Thanks pelevinfan, We all have to stick together. I sure who ever you interviewed for will see the light!

I feel your pain. I am sure you will get in somewhere. ( though me saying this might not ease you pain) I have faith that you will get in. Hell I have faith for everyone except me. I heard from a school for an interview and I am still waiting for a response. Geez, it hurts to see people no matter if they are in the same program or not get in when you are just waiting, and waiting, and checking your email, and checking gradcafe and refreshing every other minute. GOD! Well, sorry for the rant. Anywho, All you need is one school to give you the chance and I am sure you will show them that they made the right choice. Good Luck from one language studies person to another

So..I assume I am denied from this program, well actually I don't really know because I have not seen any results aside from one post. I will give them another week and then contact them. Who do I contact, the department, POI, or someone else?

Me: I won't hear back from my schools until later this month and early march Boyfriend's Mom: That late, Hang in there! Me: yeah, ok... Boyfriend's Mom: you know, he got into.... Me: yeah i know, I live with him...ya know this conversation is no longer productive, GOODBYE Boyfriend's mom: well... Me: "phone clicks" -
goldielocks, congrats! I live in rogers park and it depends on what part of it you want to live in. Where I live it is near the lake and is a family community. What are you looking for?
-
Okay, well then it would now depend on if you would be willing to take the train, or if you bike. Also it depends on the price. There is a website many people I know who live in Evanston used. I don't live there but visit since I am too broke to afford any of the places I wanted. It was either those places or somewhere else. Anywho, here is http://www.apartmentpeople.com/neighborhood/evanston Hopefully it will load up and show the prices and and the picture of the place, when it is open for use, lease, etc. Just scroll down and click the picture and it will tell you the information and show where it is located by map. I think this will be more helpful than just telling you where to live in Evanston as each place has its own feeling to it. I hope this helps and congrats on your acceptance! if you need more information, I will try my best!
