You would be saving more by living in an apartment in Evanston than being in a dorm. It is much more lively to be away from the campus especially under stressful periods of time. And plus Evanston is beautiful. However, i am not sure if you are asking about particular spots, or if you are asking about dorm vs apartment.

Rehearse Rehearse Rehearse. I had a language test through skype and bombed it. I am very upset that i got judged by that when all other things are good. Please for the love of God rehearse.

Hi everyone. I have a Japanese language interview on Wednesday with a good school in the midwest. I am not sure what I should expect from it. It has to be completely in Japanese. I just want to know what it is like. I am not great at Japanese speaking. Reading and Writing are my things. It doesn't matter if you know Japanese, I just want someone to help me understand what to expect. Overall, I am excited...but still a little afraid.

I am into Japanese language pedagogy. I am not sure if you know (not trying to insult your smarts but when I say that people are always like so I have to usually tell people what it is) what it is about. This focuses on the curriculum in Japanese textbooks, the development of language abilities in students, and teaching it to them. I hope to help create a textbook to help students learn the language better and faster. Later open a Japanese language school for English speakers. Big dream right?

If you weren't doing what you are doing, what would you be doing?

I would love to be an artist, i did this before I got into East Asian languages. Oh, Film and television studies. Must not forget that. -
Ok, I am so late replying. I am into Japanese actually. For the post above. Have you heard anything from Upenn? Do you know when stuff goes out?

100% this. I am privileged to be where I am as people from where I come from don't get this chance. But, I am aware that those who have family who have PhDs, MBA and so forth know more starting out as an advantage.

I am happy people are talking about this. I finally feel like people feel what I feel. It is so hard to talk about these things to people who don't experience it. And I too hate a** kissing. Gosh, if I knew what I knew now, I would have tried to go to a research school. Getting research experience at a teaching school, one that does not do any type of research like Ohio State for example (just picked the school...roll with me here) makes it difficult to prove that I wanted to do anything while applying to graduate school. Even in the school, I had to do extra work to find stuff that was already known by privledged students. But it is safe to say that even if I don't know you all, I feel your struggle and we are all going to succeed!

Please don't give in. If you really love it. I am sure it will pay out later

Well it is very important to help underprivileged students since they are often not taught to want education. They are also in some of the most underfunded schools where they could have teachers who don't care, teachers who aren't certified or both. It needs to be fixed on a personal, community, and larger scale and different things need to be done for each. -From someone who went through this

Ah, good choices. I have been stuck on Mary Jane-Rick James for some reason
-
I hope so! I believe we all will make it. Someone will realize our passions and let us show them how great we are.

I am first generation and from a working class background. The sheer fact that I have done a lot of the things some other people did without my circumstances is so mind blowing. It is quite difficult for individuals like us especially in the beginning.

I have done that before for my cv but I am not in your field. I dont see the harm if it is under professional development as you are not making it seem like you have done something unethical. i think it does show commitment at the least it shows that you have learned or did something related to the field in a way that can single you out for not being clueless. My tiny chump change

Hi, I always hear people saying they get funding from different departments. How do people do this? And can you get it after you are in your program. I am so confused
-
That is not necessarily true for all fields. Many people do that to maximize there chances. It is no different then someone only applying to a few. And reasons why some people apply to several are because many people are good in certain fields, there is not only 'one' distinguished person in that field, people would be honored to work with those people, and many schools can have a strong fit for a person depending on the field, most likely, the humanities.
-
It might be on their part. Some people are slow to update information. I would call to ask if they received them. I had to do that for one of my schools and they fixed it for my own sanity.

Ah, all my recommendations are turned in. YAY! Now I have to wait...

I have done independent studies with professors in my school instead. You could also find people to work with at the school of choice which will be difficult because many don't do stuff in the summer but is possible (I have done it) and then you could see if the school or the school of choice will accept you. I have received funding outside my school but that was through said programs mentioned in your post. That said, they take all types of people especially for sciences. All you have to be underrepresented in some way, not just race although that is a factor. I would look at the school and if they have that type of program if that is the last decision you have see if you can apply by contacting the coordinators of the program. It doesn't hurt to try and many people other than African American and Hispanic people do this program. It just really all depends on the field and since I don't know your field, I don't feel I can help much. Hope it helps! (From someone with several research experiences). 1) Do you have the money to go on your own if you set up a summer research project? 2) Which types of schools are you trying to do this at? It really matters.

Just contact the other programs you applied to and explain what happened so they will know what happened and know whats going on when they review the applications and then you should be fine
-
I would do both. You should say what you want to do first and then talk about it more generally. I spoke about language pedagogy specifically and then spoke about the broad categories that i could fit into as well
