I'm a bit confused about what counts as outreach. I tutored elementary school students in math after school every week for about 4 years, and as an undergrad I tutored in free walk-in help centers for chemistry and math and worked with students one-on-one or in small groups for upper level classes (also free to the students) for 15-20 hours per week for a year and a half. But I'm not sure if this is enough to count? Should I mention these? (I don't want to put it in if it's a far stretch, but I'm not sure)

I've enjoyed being a lab TA so far. The majority of my students have come very well prepared (I can and do deduct points from their grade if they don't) and I give a brief lecture before every lab to explain what we're doing and why, demonstrate any techniques that might be completely new to them, and answer their questions. I've never taught discussion before, but I would like to try it sometime if only to see if I like it.

I got 780Q/690V/3.5AW and the only studying I did was to take the practice tests on the ETS website to become familiar with the format. I got into 9 out of 10 schools so I can't imagine why I would have wanted to spend any more time than that.

I eat kielbasa quite often. It comes ready to eat but I fry it in a pan (no oil, just its own juices) for a bit to increase the flavor. I haven't gotten sick from it yet so I'm not concerned about it.

Dressing the Part . . . for Girls!
Chande replied to American in Beijing's topic in Officially Grads
I'm 5'6" and I have a similar distance between the top of the knee and the tip of my finger. The only things I ever wear shorter than that are shorts when I'm working out. My apartment complex has a 24-hr gym on-site, so I workout there after I get home. -
What about publications in an undergraduate journal, or presentations of research projects at student conferences? Should these be listed on the CV?

I have no insight into dating a colleague at the graduate level or in a work environment, but I just wanted to say that I was the one who asked my fiance out. Granted, this was in undergrad, but we met in a class freshman year and hung out with the same general group of people during freshman year. I asked him out right before sophomore year started. We went to DisneyQuest together with my family for the first date. This was my first date with anyone ever, by the way. I'm marrying him next summer, so the strategy of just asking a guy out instead of waiting for him to do it can't be all bad, and I don't feel like men should be the only ones expected to make a first move anymore!

I'm starting my program in the fall, but I took a graduate/undergraduate cross-referenced course as an undergrad with my undergrad research advisor. I loved the subject and her teaching even though it was an 8 am course and I even ended up getting 100% on one exam and an A in the course. I definitely feel like it gave her even more material to recommend me in her LOR as well as helping me reach a much deeper level of understanding in the area of research I was pursuing, but that is at the undergrad level as that's all I've experienced so far. I'm going into a PhD program in the fall and we don't get into a lab until October at the earliest, but the three courses I'm taking are all with professors whose labs I may be interested in joining.

This time last year - What were you doing?

In July of 2011 I was taking biochemistry and bridge to abstract math and was working part-time as a tutor for my school. -
Definitely! We used Penske's Roadside Assistance this time because (luckily!) we had paid for extra insurance on the truck. It was remarkably slow since we moved on a Sunday, but the compensation afterwards was fair. And luckily everything in our truck was undamaged. My fiance decided to waive $100 off the debt of a formerly homeless friend who lived with us for a year (longer story than I want to go into...) because he had been the one who figured out a genius way to secure our television and 55 gallon fish tank...and they survived despite being towed at a 30 degree angle in both directions! Also, a picture: Yeah, it was scary...
-
We ended up moving for free...because both wheels on the rear driver's side blew out and the person who came out to service it said it was clear it had been improperly put on the vehicle. It had to be towed 3 hours up to our apartment. I just feel lucky that my fiance was able to handle a situation that scary. We were moving from Florida to North Carolina.

I had a low AW score (3.5), but my other scores were good (780Q, 690V) so I guess AW really doesn't matter.

I moved from Florida to North Carolina last Sunday. We had a nightmare of a trip up, as the moving truck had a major blowout which resulted in both of the rear driver's side tires and rims being lost. In the end the moving company had to have it towed up the last three hours of the trip at their expense and also didn't charge us at all for the truck. Orientation starts August 13 and classes start on August 27. We decided to move up early so that we would have time to get used to the area and for my fiance to find a job before school starts.

90%. I really wasn't expecting it!

Thanks. The only move she's done was only an hour away, and she adapted to the new location just fine but didn't enjoy moving at all. I got her microchipped today, and the vet gave me a medication I can give her beforehand to help her calm down. I won't have anywhere to stay other than a hotel, though, so my fiance and I are going to attempt to drive straight through. Just hoping it will be possible.

I've kept a cat in a two bedroom for about a year now and she seems happy with it (even after spending most of her life at my parents' house, a 4 bedroom). But I don't know how well a studio or 1 bedroom would go. I'm getting a 1 bedroom in the fall but it has a den so all in all it's not much smaller than my current apartment. Anyway, this is my cat. She's ten years old and I was 12 when I got her. Her sister still lives at my parents' house, but they seem happier separate than they were together and I don't think they would react well to being put back together. She loves being in the bathroom when I take a shower and drinking water directly from the faucet, which I've always thought is odd. http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/423572_10150662530758126_720448125_10956883_615889809_n.jpg So I will be moving her nearly 700 miles come fall. I will be asking the vet what to do make the move go smoothly and I will be getting her microchipped, but if anyone has experience with moving a cat a similar distance I'd love to hear advice on that. I don't want to fly her because I don't want her to get lost like Jack the Cat and I think driving her should be fine with proper advice from the vet and with multiple drivers so that someone can always be with her.

I accepted an offer from Duke and my fiance and I will be moving to Durham in late June or early July. I have one car and he doesn't have one, so either he needs a job he can walk/bike to or take public transportation to (or carpool with me) until he makes enough money to get a car of his own. We visited the area for about 5 days over spring break and found an apartment we like and we're submitting the application for it today. So I think we have most of the bases covered so far other than my fiance finding a job. Is there anything else I should start planning for the move now, and any advice on helping significant others with a job search in the area?

I accepted Duke's offer just an hour or so ago. When I visited it just felt like it was right for me, like it was where I'm supposed to be.

Doing a survey: How much time did you take to prepare for the GRE?
Chande replied to ccarmona's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
One week. It didn't deserve any more time than that. -
Is anyone rejected by University Of Texas At Austin?
Chande replied to PhdWL's topic in Chemistry Forum
Mine still says in review but I'm assuming it's a rejection. I have plenty of other good choices anyway so I don't care. -
I haven't decided where I'm going yet, I'm actually visiting Gainesville right now.

I'm still in undergrad but I've had a headache 24/7 for the past four years and there's a small cyst in my brain that my neurologist said was unlikely to be causing my problem, but said I should get MRIs done in the future to monitor it. I do have a medication that works well for me but my academics earlier in college were definitely affected before I found a medication that works so well. The professor I do undergraduate research with is very sympathetic and understanding of my condition and I'm still on my father's health insurance so that pretty much covers the costs for it, and the support of my fiance, my parents, and my brothers has really helped as well.

I currently live in Florida as well and I only heard about the law when USF was proposing to make a dorm co-ed within the same room and ran into issues because of the law. Apparently one person in the state legislature wanted to repeal it but it didn't get anywhere and other legislators were opposing him because they said they wanted to take a stand for monogamy or some similar BS. http://www.usforacle...58#.T0b54fEgdv4 But if it will be a non-issue in Gainesville and we can find an apartment together without any issue than this shouldn't be a problem, I guess.

I'm considering attending UF (I'm a native Floridian), but I am concerned because I know that there is a law banning unmarried couples from living together in Florida. My fiance and I want to move together and live together, so I am wondering how much apartment complexes in the area care about the law and how much it would be enforced in Gainesville. I don't want to have undue difficulty in finding a place to live because of a law that I believe is unconstitutional and outdated, and if it's a problem it would really be a deal-breaker to me about staying in Florida, as we won't be getting married for another year at least.
