  1. There is a huge strike of Canadian Visa officers globally. So, it is not easy to get study permit nowadays.
  2. Your department should insist on your admission. You should contact the department and express your enthusiasm for being a graduate student in that program.
  3. Hi, thanks a lot my friends. My nomination is successful. Actually, the conditions are quite good, and it comes in the form of offer. I have to say "yes" or "no", most probably, I will accept the offer
  4. I do not like such ranking lists. I think the rankings should be done on the basis of departments (e.g. political science, philosophy, medicine)...
  5. I heard back from several programmes at York but I have no idea about the department of Economics. However, most generally, when York says the decisions will be made between Mar-May, it will possibly be in May, they have no hesitation to do the things in the latest instance.
  6. Actually, I applied two programs at York. You are right that the admissions office of the university is really a mass. In most cases, it is impossible to contact them, essentially it is very difficult for international applicants. However, for both of the programmes that I applied, I could say that they replied all of my e-mails. And PhD program coordinators in Environmental Studies and in Social and Political Thought sent very sincere answers to my e-mails. Indeed, PhD coordinator in Environmental Studies is a very helpful person and I asked him several questions during whole application process. The case for Social and Political Thought is different. I had never contacted the program coordinator. However, in the late March, I asked him the situation of applications. 10 days later, he sent me an e-mail and said that the committee met on the previous day, and my application was waitlisted. So, there could be two possibilities in your case. The first one, the committee has not decided on your file yet. The second one, they are waiting for an international student scholarship (like Trillium). They should contact you in the coming weeks. But, it is better to contact some professors with whom you would like to work. There is a professor called Anna M. Agathangelou in the program. She is a very helpful person, you may send her an e-mail and ask "Dear Professor, I applied for the PhD programme in ..................... and I am still waiting for a decision. Do you know anything about the final decisions of the committee? I would very happy to be in touch with you in the process." I hope this will work.
  7. I couldn't manage it well. So, even though I am in, I have an intensive neck ack for more than one week.
  8. If there is a POI that you are in touch, you may send her/him an e-mail.
  9. I accepted the offer of York. This means that I won't go for McMaster's Political Science. So, there will be one more spot for the waiting visa students.
  10. Hi, I received the financial package from York. It is 21.600 CAD per year for 5 years and 3.000 CAD for the first year as an entrance scholarship. And there is 1.600 CAD per term in the form of international tuition fee reduction. I still have to pay tuition, but I do not know how much I am going to pay...
  11. Thank you very much for the responses. Yes, it is most generally said that the award is $40.000 per year but nobody knows that this award will cancel or not my regular funding supplied by the department should I be admitted for it. Finally, I have only be nominated, it is not sure, the committee of faculty of graduate studies at York will decide it. I just heard that York will still offer a portion of funding, but I do not know what will be the form of it. If it will only be the remaining 1/3, it may not be good since normally York offers funding for 6 years but this award is for 4 years. Who knows anyone who has already been accepted for this scholarship?
  12. Hi, my faculty has nominated me for this scholarship. It seems very prestigious. But, the information about this scholarship is very limited on the internet. Is there anyone who has any idea about this funding?
  13. I haven't received the letter of financial support from York yet. I will let you know after receiving.
  14. Thank you very much. I will make my decision in a few days but most probably York will be my choice.
  15. That is really a good topic. For the first acceptance; due to the difference of time I was at home and watching TV. It was at 11.30 p.m., I just thought that I should go to my room to check my e-mails. I signed in my gmail account and two minutes later than it, the e-mail came from York's Env. Studies PhD program director. The director says "congratulations, the committee unanimously recommends you for admission". When I saw that sentence I suddenly started to cry with happiness The second one. Again due to the difference of time (I am in Turkey and applied for Canadian Schools) It was at 10.30 p.m. I have a f.ck buddy, and we met on that day. After a dinner in a restaurant, we went to her home. We continued to drink some beers (as we did during the dinner), then at 10.30 p.m. I just thought that I did'nt check my e-mails for more than 5 hours. I checked my e-mails via my phone and it is written that McMaster's faculty of graduate studies sent me an e-mail (it was sent at 10.20 p.m.) with the subject line "admission to McMaster", then I opened the e-mail and all the details could be found on it. I became very happy and confident after that since this was my second acceptance. So, you cannot imagine what happened between my f. buddy and me after that great news
  16. I am an international applicant. I am so sorry but I would like to write the amount of money that I was offered. Okay, McMaster has admitted me to the PhD in political science. I was offered 27.770 CAD, but for the tuition, fees and health care they require back 16.500 CAD. So they want that I should survive with 11.270 CAD per year. And the funding is guaranteed for 4 years even though the program is for 5 years. However, two days later of admission e-mail, the POI sent me an e-mail and said that he wants to work with me and he can supply more funding through RAship. I hope this may help.
  17. Were both of them offered in the same package? Or the professor contacted you specifically for RAship?
  18. You may suggest a sort of reading list that you may deal with until you start to work with you POI
  19. Waitlisted by York's Social and Political Thought (PhD). I sent an e-mail to the program director two days ago, and he informed me today about my situation. I will ask him what is my rank on the waiting list.
  20. My friend, thank you very much for your message. McMaster guarantees the funding for 4 years. That is a good perspective to consider, I missed that point. Yes, Hamilton is much cheaper but I do not know whether there is a huge difference in living expenses or not.
  21. Hi everyone, I have been admitted to two different PhD programs at these universities. I am an international applicant 1) PhD in Environmental Studies at York 2) PhD in Political Science at McMaster For the first one, I could say this is my second application year. Last year, I was the top condidate on the waiting list since Env. Studies Programme admits only one international student. I could not achieve to be in last year, however both POI and Program Coordinator encouraged me to apply again. I applied this year, and now I am in. This is my dreamed program and we discussed very intensively on my research project with my POI and program coordinator also wants to help me in my PhD project because he also liked too much my research subject. Nowadays, I am waiting for the letter of financial support from York. They will also nominate me for a very prestigious scholarship in Ontario. Second one, as far as my masters is on political science, I am deeply interested in globalization and political theory. My POI at York told me that since they admit one int. student, I should apply other programs to increase my chance. I also applied to McMaster while I was completing my application for York. But, I contacted nobody at McMaster before the application, I just applied as a formality. Last week, McMaster sent me an e-mail that I have been admitted to the program. It was really a big surprise for me. Then, on the following day, they sent me the financial details via e-mail and they also said that a very prestigious professor wants to work with me, he has been appointed as my adviser. The financial support is very limited, and I cannot maintain my life in Canada as an international student. However, two days later, that new POI sent me an e-mail that he is the chair of a very important project supported by Canadian Scientific Council, and he said that he can supply additional funding for me in that project. He likes too much my research subject (it is really an interesting proposal) and wants to work with me. Nowadays, I could not decide what to do. 1) Is it a good idea to think only around the issue of funding? Both of the departments are great and both of the POIs are very prestigious and internationally respected people. Therefore, there are only two main criterias for decision. First one is the location and second one is the funding. 2) If I accept the offer of York ( that is what I will choose most probably) how could I send a polite message which points out the decline of the offer to the POI at McMaster? 3) What would you choose If you were me?
