Update to anyone who remembers my question about wearing a white dress.. during interview day, a faculty member commented to me that she liked my outfit! Nice and bright
Thoughhhh I will NEVER wear white again if I can help it. It was my first in-house interview and I did not anticipate that I would "perspire" as much as I did   #lessonlearned

Ponder the larger things in life! Like 'why do bronies exist?' or 'why are chinchillas so dang adorable?
Though I'm 5'10 so i'll be overthinking if someone is going to be scrutinizing why my dress pants don't cover my ankles XD

Lol people you're overthinking the hair. Wear it however you feel more comfortable. If you know you're prone to fiddling with it then put it up/back. Just bring a light mousse or gel and the night before French braid and bobby pin so next morning it will be less frizzy and you won't have to mess with it as much.

Right and I'm too scared to check a bag because this WOULD be the time that it gets lost.

I can identify with this. When I was in my masters program, everyone in my cohort got into their PhD program of choice except me and it was incredibly hard. It's not really trivial. You've clearly worked hard for it and rejection is hard even without the social comparison. Hang in there, though. Focus on your interview. It's not over yet.

Thank you!! I would be interested if anyone remembers or knows of the idea-making process.. how did it become cafe-themed, what did the creator(s)/ @bgk think of how it was taking off and watching from *afar*
but no worries if this is too much to dig into, thought it would be a nice way to go about waiting for my app results  I'll work my magic with what I've got.. for the story in meter.. stay tuned!

I don't have much time right now but I'll be honest and say that neither I nor bgk are the real reason this site was started. It began with the results survey, which initially involved people emailing (I think, I really can't remember) their results in and then manually updating a spreadsheet that was posted online. That method of even having a place where people could find results came from a LiveJournal community called applyingtograd. Then came the idea of having a place for discussion, which was originally broken down into broad areas, like "City Guide", "Social Sciences", "Humanities", etc. I think @bgk took it over within a year or two of it getting started and made lots and lots of changes in terms of forum software, hosting, etc. due to his computer science skills. Oh, and this all dates back to spring 2006, I think.
If there are specific things you're interested in, ask and I'll try to remember.

EXACTLY! I hadn't even thought about it until a girl in my lab mentioned how someone told her if you tend to touch your hair like bangs, or move it from side to side then maybe think about wearing it up but wearing mine up always gives me a headache. Decisions, decisions.

@montanem I'm out of upvotes too but this is great and so true.
@GunningForGrad yes, you can only like 5 things a day I guess before they put you in forum jail.

We have to stop saying that we need to "not sound political".  Being political and debating those opinions are a vital element of a democracy.  When we stop doing that we have problems.  We have Trump today because we stopped debating, because we all stopped being political.  Yes this is absolutely political.  Most of us are not xenophobic jerks scared of what the future holds, most of us fully support bright and talented people from all over the world coming into this country, most of us support saving the lives of thousands of families (who are in part forced to leave because of US interference in their part of the world).  This is a forum of educated people who will have differing opinions from my own, but I think we can offer our support to international students w/o disclaimers of not being political.  Supporting them is political, and that's ok.
Otherwise I too stand with you all.  As a hispanic American I too have some uncertainty, but not nearly the kind that an international student must feel after this week.

I really don't understand why people do this? Unless the program does something egregious (i.e accept applications then tells people it won't be accepting students that year) its pretty unprofessional. How are they going to react under supervision or if a client insults them? No one is guaranteed a spot and there is always an applicant with better credentials that you out there
Not gonna lie though, there's a lot of red on the results page and it makes me a little nervous/annoyed that programs won't update portals but eh, c'est la vie. On a more important note is that I need to wash my hair and plan outfits but I have the flu and just want to cocoon myself. burrito burrito XD

Yep. Just saw one for a program I applied to, and it's like, well, I'm glad you won't be in my cohort.

I'm with you--I haven't gotten any rejections or acceptances from psych programs (I did get one acceptance from an epidemiology program, though). I have three interviews upcoming and while I'm assuming rejections at the places I haven't heard from, I still have nothing concrete.
I assume Rutgers is done, but I never heard anything more.

As a US citizen, I just want to say I hope this gets resolved soon. Our borders should never be closed to someone because of their race, religion, country of origin, etc. <3 to all of you international applicants who are dealing with this on top of the anxiety of waiting to hear back from programs and planning out your futures.

Thank you for starting this thread and sending your support, @SarahBethSortino. We international students are going through a lot of uncertainty and there's nothing we can do about it - no amount of hard work, good grades or better scores can help. But solidarity helps! Thank you.

I support international students! I think people forget what a huge benefit having students from a wide variety of backgrounds is. There are a lot of us who want you here and are offering support to those who now have plans up in the air.

Yes! As an historian, I think it's vital to have a different perspective. When I was doing my masters it was fascinating to get a non western perspective on my research topics.

Personal anecdotes =|= evidence. Just because you had this experience does not mean others fears, concerns, or experiences are invalid.

Hey I didn't really know where to post this, but I just wanted to give a shout out to every potential grad student out there who is dealing with waiting for decisions AND having their plans potentially derailed by the immigration order yesterday. I'm NOT trying to make this political - I'm just throwing out some support during what has to be a difficult time for our fellow "waiting gamers."

If you can get a funded masters, I would do it. If you can't, it's not worth the debt, and I would keep working as an RA. Try to get as many pubs as you can. Improve your GRE scores. Find ways to network with people. I think that's what helped me way more than my masters.
