Did any of you get your master's overseas and continued to pursue a PhD in the United States? I am thinking of going that route, and I was wondering what your experiences were and if there was any advice you could give me? Anything would help.

I just got accepted to Durham University in the UK! Can anyone give me a decent picture of what living in Durham is like?

Master's abroad, then PhD in the USA?
abc123xtc posted a topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
First off, I'm a USA student. I recently just got an acceptance from Durham University to do a master's by research. My longterm career goal is to be a professor of sociology. I know that receiving a PhD from a foreign university might hurt my chances in academia in the USA, but I was wondering what your opinion on receiving a master's from the UK and then pursuing a PhD in the USA was? I never studied abroad during my undergrad career, so I see this as a great opportunity to live abroad, while also getting an education. Plus, Durham University is one of the top 5-10 universities in the UK for sociology. What are your thoughts? -
I just got accepted at Durham University for Masters by Research. Would getting my master's abroad and a PhD in the USA be okay career-wise? I obviously need to do more research on this...

Ahh, this makes me so antsy. I haven't gotten a rejection, a letter, or an updated submission status. I guess we'll see...

I was a little sad about being rejected at Indiana U, but I honestly wouldn't want to live there too much, so I wasn't that disappointed. It wasn't even in my top 3 schools I want to go to.

Thanks. I hope they send us notifications soon! They said they would make a decision within 30-60 days, but... I sent my application at the end of November. They're being incredibly slow.

Wow, thanks for the info! I mostly applied to UNLV because of some of the research that the faculty has done on the sex industry. I was actually an anthropology major with a minor in sociology, but I did an independent research project for six months with the sociology department where I designed and conducted an original research project, wrote and received a grant, and wrote a thesis. I also presented at a major anthropology conference. Aside from that, I don't know if my stats are amazing. I did average on the GRE (I'm not good at these tests), and I'm applying with a 3.4 GPA.

Good to know! Thanks for the info.

We were doing a unit on sexual health, and one of my students told me the number of sexual partners she had had in her response paper. I personally don't care about these things, but I wasn't sure if I should be flattered or concerned that she was so open to me about it.

Application Status...minus the actual status

Yeah, my application status has changed on one school's website, but there still hasn't been a decision made. It's quite odd to me. -
Actually, I have no trouble finding jobs. I have trouble getting hired.

I applied and also haven't heard anything yet! It's weird that they seem to be doing rejections first.

I want to get my nose pierced. It's not radical, but I can't have one right now because I have to look professional. Orrrr I might get a snug piercing.

That sounds like an amazing opportunity! You should take this opportunity. Grad school will always be there later.

I've actually decided to teach English abroad as my backup. If I don't get into graduate school, I'm starting a TEFL program in the spring. I'll teach abroad for a couple of years and then apply again.

The psychological joys of applying to grad school

I'm not having nightmares, but I'm having a much harder time getting enough sleep and/or sleeping through the night. -
I knew someone who purposely mispronounced Weber. Annoyed me to no end.

I know this is hard to do, but you need to take a deep breath and calm down. It's hard to stop myself from freaking out about these things too (to the point where I have mild insomnia as a product of my anxiety), but you're not doing yourself any favors by obsessing over something you have no control over. You did the best you can, and now you can only hope for the best.

If you weren't doing what you are doing, what would you be doing?
abc123xtc replied to LLajax's topic in Waiting it Out
Me too, actually. But then I realized that it would most likely make me bitter and I probably wouldn't get to help as many people as I would like. -
This is easy to forget sometimes.
