  1. I used the back of one of my physical rejection letters to write down a tart recipe. It got covered with flour and grease during the baking process, and the tarts were delicious. Very cathartic!
  2. I haven't heard anything from Vanderbilt. Based on the results board, they give acceptances in Feb and rejections in late March into April, but there aren't many postings. I might call the department next week to see if they've decided.
  3. Thanks for the advice. I am planning on submitting an abstract to AAA and will most likely attend if it's accepted or not. My only concern is that I know for sure several POIs will be at the AAPA conference and I'm not sure about the AAA. In your experience is the AAA meeting something that all or almost all profs attend? Mine didn't, but we also didn't have a phd program.
  4. Is anyone attending this conference in April? I am thinking of attending if I can get a decent price on a flight to Portland. As I don't think I was accepted anywhere this year, I see this as a good opportunity to network with professors that I can contact next year during applicaitons. However, I won't be presenting a paper, so I'm not sure if the cost will be worth it (what is the significance of "attended conference" on a CV?) Also, is anyone (female) willing to share a room during the conference? The conference hotel is $155 a night, but I may end up staying at a cheaper hotel further away and getting transport everyday (family discount = a room for <$35).
  5. I was in a similar situation with one of my referees. They hadn't completed the letter at 9 pm the day it was due, despite my numerous e-mails and in-person reminders. I was freaking out and my SO basically said that this is my future and I needed to suck it up and call her at home. I did, and even though it was stressful, the letters were done 30 minutes later. I am the kind of person who hates to bother others with this kind of thing, but when you ask and ask and wait politely there comes a time when you need to be more forceful.
  6. Is the person who posted the UNLV rejection on here? If so, could you tell me how you received notification? My online application still says "Forwarded to Department for Review." Thanks (and best of luck with your other apps)
  7. Thanks! That gives me some hope, but as you saw, I'm also making a plan B.
  8. One of the programs I applied to basically said don't bother paying the application fee if your score isn't at least 1200. Another recommended scores in the double digits (as in over 1000). Obviously this is the old scoring system so I'm not sure what that equates to now.
  9. Regarding ASU, I e-mailed the grad coordinator and she said that notices are going out this week and next. However, in the past it seems like acceptances go out one week and rejections the next, so I'm counting this as a probable rejection.
  10. I've also been thinking that I may need to try again next year. I still have hope, but I've realized I may not get in anywhere. I was wondering if you have any advice on how to get published or present at conferences when you're out of academia. I'm working full time doing research, but not in the field (it pays the bills... mostly) so any work research or publication won't be directly related to anthropology. Thanks for any advice!
  11. Mine still says "in review" too. I didn't apply to U of A, would have liked to but the research didn't fit.
  12. These Arizona State results are going to give me an ulcer! It seems like the acceptances went out earlier this week, but I haven't officially been "denied" even though at least one person has. aelizabeth, have you received a result yet?
  13. Is anyone else wondering about that ASU acceptance? Not to sound stalker-ish, but it was there when I looked at 7:30 am (6:30 in Tempe). Doesn't this seem an odd time to get an acceptance e-mail (especially on a Monday)? Makes me wonder if it's real. If it is, congrats to the acceptee! And more waiting and refreshing for me...
  14. A few years ago I was in kind of the opposite situation as you. I was applying to UK Master's programs and none of my professors or guidance staff knew anything about education in the UK and what my chances were of getting in. I know Master's programs are a lot less competitive than PhDs, but it worked out for me so don't count yourself out before you even get your results! I also know what you mean about not having anyone you know applying to PdDs. Just because I am "so smart" does not mean I'll get in.
